3 News Dr Bert Flugelman AM was awarded a Fellowship of the National Art School at the annual conferring of degrees. At the same ceremony the Hon Nathan Rees, Premier and Minister of the Arts, confirmed the future of the troubled Art School. From our President Our recent Towers exhibition in Chifl ey Tower and Governors Phillip & Macquarie Towers was a great success.we sold 28 of the 115 sculptures on display, and despite the economic climate, we had some high value sales as well as less expensive ones. Feedback was very positive from the building managers, their tenants and visitors to the buildings. Here is one example of an sent to Chifley building management: Keep meaning to say how much I m enjoying the sculpture exhibition. Thanks for putting it on - nice change of fl avour! Congratulations and good work every one. Jenny Green, President O n 21st May at the conferring of degrees at the National Art School, Dr Bert Flugelman AM, one of Australia s best known sculptors was awarded a Fellowship of the National Art School by the Hon. Nathan Rees. Bert Flugelman graduated from the school 60 years ago. The Premier said that Mr Flugelman had made an enormous contributon to the visual arts in Australia and had been a great teacher and mentor to young sculptors. He had also shown unwavering support for the National Art School (NAS). The new director of the School, Professor Anita Taylor presented a welcoming address to a packed hall of graduating students, friends and relatives in the Old Cell Block Theatre. Among other dignatories present was living art legend, John Olsen A.O O.B.E also a Fellow NAS. On the same night, Nathan Rees made the announcement of the future of NAS. This is a historic day for the National Art School which fought for and has achieved independence - you have new leadership, a new structure and a future that is assured. Approved by the NSW cabinet this week, the board includes, Peter Watts AM as chair, who was the director of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW for 27 years. Others on the board include, Mark Tedeschi QC, Sandra Yates AO, Hon. John Aquilina MP, the Director General of the Dept. of Art, Sport and Receation, Carol Mills, and Mr Peter Riordon, the Deputy General of the Department of Education and Training. Their three year appointments began on 1 June Under the new arrangement, the National Art School is nolonger overseen by the NSW Department of Education and Training. Mitzi McColl ( ) Mitzi McColl was born in Vienna, Austria and migrated to Australia in She was one of the original members of the Sculptors Society, a past president and long term member of the committee; she was also an exceptional sculptor. Mitzi had taught many of the members of The Sculptors Society; one of these members was Jan Shaw. This is Jan s tribute to Mitzi McColl: Mitzi McColl was my tutor, mentor and a friend of forty years. A couple of years ago, I asked her whether she was still making sculpture, she said, no, but I dream about it. Sweet dreams, Mitzi. by Jan Shaw 3

4 Wolfgang Gowin Wolfgang Gowin was raised and educated in Germany and has lived and worked in the USA and Costa Rica. He now lives in Bonnells Bay on the shores of Lake Macquarie in NSW. He is a medical researcher, Professor of Radiology and Osteology and has lectured all over the world. He began sculpting well before his medical studies and his passion for this art form has never ceased. His sculptures are located in museums, universities, public places and corporations in Germany, USA and Costa Rica. Gowin has lived in Australia for only the past 4 years; he visited Australia back in 1978, fell in love with this country and decided then that Australia was where he would settle down. His sculpture encompasses installation art, land art, large outdoor sculpture and indoor sculpture. His works can be playful and they can also be deeply thought provoking; he is also fond of including references in his sculptures to different cultures, past and present. Gowin is strongly anti-war and he is not timid in showing it, tackling this subject in an innovative way with the inclusion of genuine military hardware in his works. W olfgang Gowin is a Professor of Radiology and Osteology, but he has also studied philosophy and art history. He has a wonderful philosophy of life in which he values people, their cultures and their individuality. His first exhibition was in Germany in 1980, a group exhibition held at the Kleine Gallerie, Berlin; and his first solo was in 1987 in Oregon, USA. Since then his work has been in numerous exhibitions in Germany, USA, Costa Rica and Australia. He has a long list of artists whom he admires, but he especially likes and is inspired by the works of Jean Tinguely, David Smith, Mark di Suvero, as well as Alberto Giacometti. He also admires the works of Salvadore Dali, Yves Klein, Richard Serra, Pablo Picasso (sculptures), Anselm Kiefer (Paintings), Joseph Beuys (sculptures), Rebecca Horn and Eduardo Chillida. Gowin believes that sculptures should fit into the environment in which they are placed and that they should not obscure their environment; the viewer should be able to look through a sculpture to the landscape beyond. Gowin is able to achieve this with his style of construction; space flows through his sculptures. 1 Some of his works have a humorous appeal. Blonde Woman Walking the Dog (pic 1) is a parody of a blonde haired woman poking out her long, red, narrow tongue while walking her poodle; her tongue is about the length of a man s neck tie. The leash attached to her little poodle also adds to the humorous aspect of this work, it is a large heavy chain, the type you see attached to the back of towtrucks. According to Gowin, the past is as important as the future and every culture as important as any other. His sculpture, Justice (pic 2) brings together symbols pertaining to justice from different cultures and religions. The top section of this sculpture which includes scales, an ostrich feather and a heart, encapsulates the belief of the Ancient Egyptians that justice was served on the deceased before they entered an afterlife. To determine the deceased s worthiness of an afterlife, it was believed the God Anubis would supervise the weighing of the deceased s heart on scales against the feather of Ma at. The hearts of those deemed unworthy of an after life were thought to be devoured by a beast. Ma at was the Goddess of truth and justice and was represented by an ostrich feather. In Ancient Egyptian sculptures she was depicted wearing the ostrich feather on her head. Later in history, according to Gowin, these scales became Scales of justice a symbol seen in old Jewish, Roman and Greek mythology. 4 This Page: 1. Blonde Woman Walking the Dog, wood and painted recycled steel. (211x160x48cm) 2. Justice, rusted steel, wood, leather, plastic cast of a heart, ostrich feather, felt, silk, copper (244x97x114cm). 2 The blue felt coat, red silk cloth and the scales are a reference to the female Justice; a figure often portrayed holding a sword in one hand and scales in the other. Her origin can be traced back to Ancient Greek and Roman images of Themus and Justitia. In Ancient Roman sculptures, Justitia was depicted wearing a red dress and blue coat. She was one of the four virtues in Roman Mythology, the others were Prudence, Fortitude and Temperance. The female Justice has continued in various forms throughout history, all over the world. Her image is also found on the Taro card which Gowin says has its origins in Ancient Jewish culture. Her image on the Taro has undergone changes, a reflection of periods in history. She has been represented on the Taro wearing a red dress and blue coat.

5 The remaining section of the sculpture, the wheels, represent the Dharma-chakra sometimes called the wheel of truth, a symbol in Budhism. The wheel of truth has its origin in old Bon religion. The eight spokes denote the eight paths to enlightenment, a set of codes to live by. Gowin is strongly opposed to war and his use of recycled war parts in his sculptures help to impart this message. His installation work (pic 3) Crematorium Place conveys his message to burn the bombs, hence the bomb s location in a fireplace. The mourning veil and the title impress further the sad message on the viewer that bombs kill people. His anti- war sentiment was behind his involvement in the Bunker project in Wünsdorf, Germany. The project was an intitiative of the developers Waldstadt Wünsdorf/Zehrendorf Ltd who commissioned Gowin to transform an old military site in Wünsdorf, Germany which had 19 cone shaped military bunkers left from WWII (pic 4); 12 were in ruins. Gowin s plan was to change this military landscape to one filled with art. Some of these bunkers were restored by Gowin to their original historical form. He said many of the visitors to the bunker site had no idea what these weird cone shaped buildings were, nor did they have any knowledge of what this site had been used for. The area had been kept top secret for decades, first by the Nazis, then later by the Russians who took over the area after the Potsdam treaty. 3 Gowin submitted his plans for the site over the years 1996/7; work began in 1997 with 12 people working on it each day; the entire project was finished in During WWII other underground bunkers on the 600 ha property were used as the hub of all telecommunications and as a place where all the plans for the war were discussed. All phone calls to Berlin were directed through the largest of the underground bunkers which had a lift large enough to fit a truck. As a directive of the Potsdam Treaty, the Russians were supposed to destroy the bunkers; they managed to destroy only 12 of the above ground bunkers and all but the largest underground bunker. The structure and unique design of the bunkers had made them difficult to destroy. Later the Russians also kept the area top secret and used it as a facility to control air space during the cold war. 4 After the wall came down in 1989, what was left were 7 above ground bunkers still intact and a mess of steel reinforced concrete rubble spread about this enormous area of forest. All this was part of the huge clean-up that Gowin had to ultimately deal with. All 19 above ground bunkers, the 7 still intact and the 12 in pieces, were converted into land art sculptures which blended harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. After talking to Gowin, he has opened my eyes to different cultures past and present and to cultural and religious symbolism such as the Dharma- Chakra which has endured the test of time. He has also reminded me of how powerful art can be in expressing the message of the destructiveness of war. It was a priviledge to interview someone who has devoted four years to a land art project which culminated in something wonderful from something so horrific. Gowin s next project is to find a large home on a dreamlike acreage where he can settle down permanently and create a sculpture park. 5 This page: 3. 8 Roger McFarlane s Studio is equipped with the latest air-filtration system Roger McFarlane was president of The Sculptors Society in 2005 and 2006, Secretary for one year and Vice President for six years. His career in sculpting began after taking classes with WEA in 1989 where he learned to carve with soapstone. He enjoyed sculpture so much he decided to continue with it. He is largely self taught, although he did visit Pietra Sancta, Italy three times over a period of 6 years working with other artists and occassionally hiring a tutor. His reason for sculpting is the permanence of it, and his favourite medium is marble because he loves the resistence it offers, although he also works with bronze. Roger prefers to work with pieces from about 30 cm up to 2.5 metres in height, so he has needed a large studio. He has received many public and private commissions both here and overseas; including Thredbo, Maitland and Newcastle; Brazil, China and Korea. Currently he is preparing for a trip to Switzerland where over a 3 week period in July-August he is heading for Vattis where he won a commission to create a work using their local marble. Last March, a group of our members, as part of our Society s organised trips to artist s studios, went to Newcastle to see Roger s studio. This is Eva Chant s account... R oger McFarlane s studio is located in a new industrial complex just off the Pacific Highway in the suburb of Sandgate. You enter Roger s studio through a room set up as a gallery displaying his finished marble and bronze sculptures arranged on plinths; he also has his paintings hung around the walls. This gallery is the first port of call for any visitor. (pic 1). Through the gallery was an area with high ceilings for working with stone, Roger s favourite medium. Roger had installed a Niagara 109/8, dust collection system as an occupational health and safety measure (pic 2 opposite page). He purchased it from Masterfield Industrial Equipment in Silverwater. The company installed the system; Roger had to ensure 3 phase power and a water supply was available to run it. 1 Roger has provided the following description 8 SYDNEY ART CASTING OFFERING A FULL BRONZE CASTING AND MASTER MOULDING SERVICE. 9 2 3 of how his dust collector works: The unit uses water to capture the dust from the air. The unit is a booth with a water wall on the back wall; it has overhead fluorescent lights to give good visibility while working. (see Pic 2) The water wall comprises a trough at the bottom on ground level which is kept up to level by a cistern somewhat the same as a toilet cistern. As the unit recycles the water you are mainly replacing water lost by evaporation. Above the main trough are two smaller troughs. What happens is that the electric fan pulls the dust through the air into the water which is sucked up to the top of the machine into a drop out chamber, the air then continues out of the building through a stack. The mixture of water and dust runs down from trough to trough and recycles through the system. Every so often depending on use, you need to scoop out the mud slurry from the bottom of the trough and dispose of it. The system works well and completely eliminates the dust problem in the studio. I mainly work in Marble so the dust can be a major issue. To make the system more effective I made a rotating work bench so that when I cut and carve stone I could always direct the flow of dust towards the water wall. (pic 4) The size of the booth in my studio allows me to work on large sculptures as well as giving me room to work without feeling claustrophobic. Roger provided a demonstration for us working on a piece of marble. (pic 4) He then gave us some insight into how he finishes his marble works: always finishing with polishing using wet n dry paper, claiming, the more you polish marble, the darker the stone becomes. After this demonstration we were taken upstairs to a mezzanine level where there was a private office where he likes to relax and think, and an open area with benches and a variety of tools and vices. His most important tools he considers are his grinders, pneumatic drills, chisels and electric sanders

10 Member s Page Photo: Mathew Crawford During their Founder s Day on 4 May 2009, Christian Brothers High School Lewisham proudly unveiled the bronze sculpture Edmund Rice: Father of Mary, Brother to all by Sydney sculptor Wendy Black. Wendy Black depicted Rice as a warm, compassionate and principled man, who was loved as a father figure by all those who knew him, and goes on to say, I have portrayed him as a father sharing a bible story with his young daughter, Mary, on his knee. Developed in association with the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio, the commission presented an exciting challenge to Wendy Black, who was amazed by the historical inconsistencies about the founder of the Christian Brothers order. The introduction to more recently published accounts on the life and charitable work of the Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice ( ) has resulted in the portrayal of a more humble and joyful figure. (2mx2mx0.5m), bronze cast by Crawfords Eileen Slarke is the first female to be commissioned by Randwick Council to create a monumental sculpture in 150 years. The Maquette of her Impressionists Seat had first been shown in Sculpture by the Sea, Eileen was inspired to create her work by a catalogue of an exhibition of Charles Conder s works at the AGNSW in Barry Pierce, Head Curator of Australian Art had produced the catalogue and curated the exhibition. The catalogue had images of paintings by Australian Impressionists, Charles Conder and Tom Roberts when they painted together on the same day, on the same northern headland, capturing the same sweeping view of Coogee Beach during the Easter weekend of Eileen said, the Impressionists Seat commemorates this historic event in Australian Art. The seat depicts the trio: Conder, Roberts and Arthur Streeton. Streeton painted his famous Coogee Beach scenes a few years later. Photo: John Brooke Angela Morrell (Left) with Babette Forster Gomme, Vice President Last month, Angela Morrel our Exhibitions Reviewer had an exhibition of her works at Primrose Park, Cremorne where she is an artist in Residence... Full of witty observation, wry humour and intriguing juxtapositions, her show of 26 mainly small and intimate works at Cremorne s Primrose Park Gallery is a wide ranging compendium of a working artist s thoughts and opinions on life, dreams, popular culture and even the environment. Her somewhat acerbic views on the world are made kindlier by the beauty of her sculptures. In Armoury (pic above on wall) a phalanx of 10 handless female arms, all lissom and superbly decorated with feathers and tattoos, marches across a gallery wall - a sharpish comment perhaps on society s inability to resist its own fashionable fads.
