Ayako came from Tokyo to live in Australia in From 2003 she studied sculpture at ANU. She completed her Masters degree in Attention Young Members Encouragement Prize & InCENTIVE We have been offered a new prize for Darling Park - for younger members who exhibit - as an encouragement. The prize will require a date of birth on application for Darling Park exhibition for artists under 40. Also, if you know of any artists whose work is interesting to you, or if you have children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, friends' children - we are encouraging younger artists to apply for student membership in a new sub-category making it more affordable for them to join us. To be eligible for this young student membership, sculptors who are under 25 years of age can join the Sculptors Society for $25 a year. They would then be eligible to apply to exhibit one piece with us at our major annual Darling Park exhibition. Please help spread the word. We hope to encourage interest in a new generation of young sculptors, by giving them a helping hand in meeting established sculptors, and helping them to get under way. It's good to see the artwork that our members exhibit beyond the perimeters of our SS shows. Ayako Saito and Sue Roberts contribution to 'Thin Ice' was no exception. The exhibition had an overall energy and strength of purpose that produced a stimulated response from it's audience. "It is said that skating on Thin Ice is like moving out of one's comfort zone. The same can be said for the seven artists who create something a little out of the artistic zone they know. When entering new pathways, it is exciting to search for opportunities that present more freedom. The risk factor the Thin Ice is the launching pad and the adrenalin rush is the fuel... so we create." * Five of the seven artists are sculptors who have exhibited in Sculpture by the Sea. Ayako Saito's four painted steel sculptures define clarity and movement in space interpreted in the form of Geometric Abstraction. The works are enamelled in a subtle metalic greyish blue. Her paintings are Lyrical Abstraction whereupon small images like atmospheric colourful formations appear to float on the surface within their frames. Sue Roberts stepped out of her comfort zone by drawing a series of expressive powerful line & tone industrial abstractions in charcoal. On Saturday 4 May, Roberts gave an 'Artist talk' Sue Roberts was born in the UK, studied at Cambridge School of Art and was recipient of the CCAT Travel Scholarship award. *Incinerator, Willoughby website Review by Angela Morrell Ayako Saito Forte Photo courtesy of Angela Morrell 2

3 Diana Hunt Diana Hunt ( ) was a long standing member of the Sculptors Society, and created some important public works. However, there seems to be little available information about her. We have not been able to find any relatives in Australia, who might have kept records of her life and work as a sculptor. 1. From the From the President hank you to those members who attended Tour AGM. I feel lucky to have your support. I am delighted with our new committee - each member contributes something special to making the Sculptors Society work for the benefit of all members, and I thank each one. She was on the Sculptors Society committee with me in the 90 s and possibly to about 2001, and in fact it was Diana who first mentioned Darling Park as a possible venue for sculpture exhibitions, while it was being built! She came to mind when I recently helped to repair a vandalized 1970 sculpture in Wahroonga Park, but it took some research to even find who the sculptor was, as there was no acknowledgement of the sculptor on the plaque! I could not even find which foundry cast the over life size bronze, (possibly in Melbourne?) Kuringai Council commissioned the repairs, and will acknowledge Diana on a new plaque. There does not seem to be much on the net, and I felt we should remember Diana, she was a lovely person to know, and a pioneer sculptor in the society. When I mentioned this to Feyona, she suggested a short paragraph in this Bulletin, and then perhaps others who remember her might like to contribute some reminiscences of her. Written by Helen Leete Images courtesy of Helen Leete 2 Images: 1. Don Quixote 2. Modern Man. Our next meeting will be held at the Mosman Art Gallery on Wednesday evening the 12th June 2013 at 7 pm. The address is the Corner of Myagah Road, Mosman close to the Spit Junction, with parking at Mosman Council car park close by. There will be drinks and canapes and please bear with us while we work out what suits everyone best. Sally Zylberberg has offered to coordinate the refreshments, and she is looking for a few volunteers. The Forum organised by Gary Grant was very interesting, Cave Urban members Clary Akon and Juan Pinto gave us a lot to think about in sculpture and materials, as well as where and how displayed. While I am writing this, we are preparing for the Towers exhibition, and it will be up when you receive this bulletin. Our bulletin editor, Claudine, will be away on holiday for 6 weeks, with little connection, so your next bulletin will be a bit later than usual - we wish Claudine and her family a happy holiday. Gateway exhibition was a success with 55 works exhibited and 8 sales - but more than that - the works looked amazing in their setting. It is always exciting to see our work in such a beautiful venue. The lighting and the glass brings out something special. Our contacts there were happy, and we have been invited back for next year. Thank you to everyone. The Towers exhibition is larger and even more varied than usual, and of course, we hope that that is a successful show. Please join us for our June 12th Forum Our NEW venue is the Mosman Art Gallery at the corner of Art Gallery Way and Myagah Road in Mosman. Starting at 6.30 pm for 7pm. There is ample parking at the Mosman Council carpark on Vista Street. Gary Grant has secured an interview with Frank Watters from Watters Gallery in Woolloomooloo, who he will video talking about his friend, the artist Robert Klippel. Robert Klippel was internationally recognised for his series of sculptures using recycled machine parts, stone and wood. This will be our first forum held at the Mosman Art gallery and our committee member Sally Zylberberg will be organising a light supper and drinks. All the committee are working to make this a wonderful experience. PLINTHS MADE TO ORDER ROGER FENTON ST. IVES, NSW TEL: (02) FAX: (02) MOB: Designed for structural integrity Light weight Affordable Plinths Also for Hire Our LOOK advertisement will have been submitted for print, and that marks the start of the Darling Park exhibition. Please get your entries in for the show as soon as possible. We still do not know how much space Darling Park will make available to us due to renovations - but having the entries early makes it a lot easier for us to work out numbers and make the selection. Don t forget to an image of your work to Eva and myself. Babette was a star at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, and looked gorgeous. There were quite a few prize winners, and the Sculpture section was a credit to all. A big thank you to all the artists who answered my call to sign up for the LOOK ad - we had an opportunity to be in their anniversary issue which had to be taken advantage of immediately. I am looking into the Society having a pop up exhibition in the Rocks area - this is an area that historically was a successful venue for the society and with the new opportunity there to show I would like to take advantage of it. We look forward to successful shows for the rest of the year, Yours Feyona 3 3

4 Towers Exhibition 2013 Tony Lennon Rendition Hebal, Gauze. Wax, String, Leather A rendition is an interpretation of a musical score or a dramatic piece. I feel that this work is a dramatic piece reminiscent of Christo s wrapped works. It certainly has drama and has a visual music. Objects when veiled in wrapping whether small or large become mysterious and magical. We are immediately led to wonder what is beneath the wrapping. What is inside, be it an unfamiliar figure or whatever, has intrigue. In this case the open weave of the gauze is stretched like a spider s web. The protective threads cover a pivotal point in red wax that is central to the form. Focus is given to the contrasting colour and powerfully conveys deep sensation and emotion. Rona Sissons What is it now? the Frog Doorman Ceramic A frog he would a-wooing go, but this haughty frog is a not about wooing but is another no-nonsense caricature from the imagination of a creator of fiction. His methods are ruthless and should you resist you are likely to be carried out horizontally and face down. Modeled in terracotta clay, fired and clear glazed Sisson s modeling style is free and easy. It suits the humour and nonchalance of this tough, slimy character. The moral of the story is do not mess about with a frog especially if he is working as the doorman or he might just give you the boot! Frankly, he is fed up with hearing your excuses. Willem van Stom Turtle Biribie Recycled Car Parts Using the processes of annealing, hammering, heat forming and welding, eccentric creatures and machines emerge out of van Stom s imagination. The upper part of the turtles shell is called the carapace Using round forms such as washers and other car parts van Stom has welded these together giving his interpretation of the fused dorsal plates of the turtle s carapace. Biribie is the given name of a pet turtle. He looks wet and shiny as if he has just emerged from the water. Most turtles spend most of their lives on land, have their eyes looking down at objects in front of them but Biribie is a curious turtle who stretches his neck forward in an enquiring manner as if he s glad to be back on terra firma once more. John Brooke The Pacific Warrior Painted Plywood & mdf Brooke has a strong love of the Pacific and he revels in its surrounding beauty. The Pacific Warrior is immersed in a totally jubilant and stunning celebration of life. Perhaps the warrior as he rejoices is also taking action warning us against climate change beckoning us to take off our mantle and join in the defence of our wonderful world. Brooke s training as a graphic artist and his eye for precision is pronounced. Control and a skilled eye for perfection, balance of shapes, textures and hue are reflected in his interpretation of nature creating a harmonious equilibrium with free following aplomb. This is a confident work, which gives added interest by the fact that Pacific Warrior is as much a painting as a sculpture. 4

5 Argo Ho Heavily Armed Bronze Heavily Armed is a bronze Abstract organization of shapes which embodies compound structures. Thoroughly striking and immediately engaging we are led to think about the connotations embodied in its form. Argo Ho graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Hong Kong University. This may be considered as irrelevant to what he creates. I think we are so privileged to have artists in our society whose influences have been derived from such a multiplicity of places. Our sculptural landscape is so enriched. Being heavily armed is synonymous with the notion that to please the great forces of nature being heavily armed will engender good relations. Ho is known for his complex abstract assemblages in metal that embody mechanical edifices. Ironically, most of his works are branded by airy arrangements, which are both pictorial and passionate. Robin Rumpf The Crowning Basalt Bega Crowning is a term that is used at the crowning point of labour and the delivery of a baby. The crown of the head emerges and becomes visible. Artists frequently have the feeling of imminent birth of ideas. This is in a sense a metaphorical work expressing a corporate state of mind. Basalt is a common volcanic rock formed from the rapid cooling of basaltic lava exposed at or very near the surface of a planet. Basalt is usually grey to black in colour, but rapidly weathers to brown or rust-red due to oxidation of its iron rich minerals. It almost always has a fine-grained mineral texture due to the molten rock cooling too quickly for large mineral crystals to grow. 7. Rumpf has utilized the intrinsic nature of the rock expressively by exposing roughly honed areas and contrasting them with broad stripes of highly polished stone. The main section of the work expresses gravid force. The upper part of the work communicates the idea of Crowning and imminent birth. Larissa Smagarinsky Triangles Bronze For many years the form of the human body has been the source to feed Smagarinsky s imagination. Although not a new work of Smagarinsky s upon seeing Triangles again I am reminded of how competent a sculptor she is. It is a classic work of Semi Abstract Cubism. The title Triangles is a reference to the breakdown into triangular shapes that are repeated throughout the work. Flattening of the forms gives a more compact feel to its structure and also added sensuality and strength. Surfaces intersect seemingly at random. However, a careful analysis of the figure has taken place. Polishing of the bronze brings out a rich warm glow in the metal. There is enormous appeal in Smagarinsky s interpretation of a reclining nude. Cathie Alexander Whales Eye 3 Western Red Cedar and Steel Rod As a whale passes from life to death the last image it sees, it s been said, is retained on the retina of its open eye. As it gazes back at us opposing feelings penetrate deep into our psyche as we experience deep sorrow and question what we have done. Whales are sensual and graceful animals; some believe that they are even more intelligent than humans. To be submerged in water offers buoyancy and flexibility and the whale s experiences of life would be so different to ours. Alexander has for some time studied and celebrated these wonderful creatures and questions our intrusion into their world. Her sculptured eye is in enameled red cedar and steel rod and is so powerfully penetrating it stirs the emotions with its enormous grace and strength. 5

6 Anthony Chandler Fred Hollows Healer Masterworks Chandler sculpts in the traditional and realistic style of the professional and experienced portraitist. He demonstrates the experience and competence of a sculptor who has full technical expertise. Chandler communicates the humility, humour, wisdom and warmth of the renowned New Zealand (we love him so much we like to think he was an Aussie) ophthalmologist. His portrait has sensitivity and immense dignity. He peers over his glasses that have been designed so the frames do not interrupt his clear vision and communication, as does Chandler's portrait. It is understandable that Chandler would empathize with the no nonsense approach of Professor Fred Hollows. His sculpting speaks of a comparable slant on life. Blaze Krstanoski Blazeski Together Bronze Blazeski s sculptures often relate to the communication of emotions such as devotion and togetherness. Through the simple flow of curved lines he creates momentum and mood that speak with clarity that words often fail. Together is pure Abstract Symbolism. The work is in perfect symmetry and balance. Created in one piece of smoothly polished and warmly patinated bronze it reaches upwards on two sides. Its straight lines are converging and flow into a heady rapid rounded movement in its uppermost part. Blazeski has successfully and simply defined in the most uncomplicated visual language togetherness. Efat Yahyaoglu Didgeridoo Player Bronze Yahyaoglu manages to penetrate the spirit of the Digeridoo player through her sensitive interpretation of the body. The player feels fully the task at hand as he focuses on his musical composition. There is ungainliness to the elongated limbs, which are punctuated with roughly honed hands and feet. The body is slumped over with concentration. HIs shoulders as with the rest of his physique are bony and weather worn. 13. Yahyaoglu has the gift of taking what could be considered as too mundane a subject matter and turning it around to a level that it can no longer be considered that way. She undoubtedly has an understanding and penetrating perception of her subject, the Australian indigenous Didgeridoo player. Meike Davis Woven Music Textile Shuttle, Piano keys There is a wealth of stuff for sculptors to utilize in discarded pianos, typewriters and the like. By their intrinsic nature they are already excitingly decorative. However, it takes a good eye to convert these objects into a serious artwork. Woven Music is a work that has utilized the insides of a piano that rises up like a seesaw and sets the action into a curved motion. Davis has married a textile shuttle with piano hammers into a perfect union of materials and idea. The piano keys and the shuttle are now silent but make visual music. This is a work that will appeal to the collector of historical artefacts as well as the art collector. Review by Angela Morrell Images courtesy of Feyona van Stom 6

A SYDNEY S Royal Easter Show will pay tribute to a Terrey Hills woman as part of a Parade of Champions in the main arena this month. Organisers of the festival, which began 190 years ago, will honour 87- year- old Babette Forster Gomme as one of 30 key contributors to its success on Excellence in Agriculture Day, March 26. Mrs Forster Gomme is being recognised for her commitment to sculpture. She was instrumental in the artform being reintroduced to the show, then at Moore Park, in 1992 after she finally persuaded an organiser. said. I told him I realised rusty metal was no good to country people. She also recruited an impressive ally. Alan Somerville designed the soldier sculptures on the ANZAC Bridge, and attended a discussion on sculpture at the show. Artists were delighted when it was reinstated, not least Mrs Forster Gomme, who realised the importance of the exposure.ww (The Show) has such a variety of people who visit. People who know nothing about art, she said. So I found it was very educational to the public. Babette Forster Gomme of Terrey Hills is being honoured at the Easter Show. Picture: MARTIN LANGE He had viewed sculpture as works of twisted, rusty metal, but Mrs Forster Gomme promised there would be no more of those materials. It took me a long time to talk him into it, she She has set up the exhibition almost every year since, and still practises her art in forms like bronze and cedar. 9 Jacek Wankowski Skerret Maurice Schlesinger Transition Pin Hsun Hsiang Totem of Language Janet Coyne Mindscape ARTISTS STATEMENT- MARYANN NICHOLLS H orses first led me to art. As a child I used to draw their heads. Then I became aware of Franz Marc with his blue horses and yellow cow and the positive feeling of strength and energising power in touching Henry Moore s work. I felt I had connected. The Red Mare and Foal', originally made in clay, then bronze (30cms), had to be a relatively light-weight construct, hence fibreglass over dense polystyrene. Initially envisaged as a green-patinated bronze colour, the piece told me differently THEY wanted, nay needed, to be RED. The form and colour drew me. It felt right. I wanted people to be drawn towards the Red Mare and Foal, to feel them - gentle hands over form. I wanted them to feel the strength of the mother and child, the smoothness and sensuality of the mare and foal and felt compelled to keep sanding and painting - seeking perfection and repeatedly applied red paint, interspersed in cycles of neverending sanding by hand. I realised perfection was impossible and that my left-brain had to surrender to my right-brain; THEY told me it was enough and to apply wax over the distressed form, buff and to finish. It felt right. protectiveness with its unstated desire in all of us for this state to last forever. My aim in sculpture is to capture a moment in time and sometimes stopping it in a frozen motion or emotion. I like to find harmony and a deep-felt calmness in my work, which then elicits a tactile response from the viewer. My work is sometimes figurative, with or without abstraction and sometimes deconstructed. Hopefully it catches the moment. It needs form and line and must make one feel like touching it. Whilst attuned to my environment I am able to hear and see the world around me and yet remain so focused on the sculpture that I am Michael Hoskins Enigma part of it. I am truly alive and like meditation it is exhausting, exhilarating and magic. I sculpt in search of this ephemeral feeling of nirvana. A physician by training, I found to my surprise that sculpture was intuitive and transformative. Clay, tactile and responsive, speaks to my core. It can be transformed into a fragile permanence by fire or converted into solid, timeless bronze, tied to the core of the earth. Welded fused metal is exciting and dangerous, beautiful and permanent but only if protected, whilst works in fibreglass offer possibilities of scale and colour. I can see Red Mare and Foal on a green lawn in a park somewhere with people leaning on it, having a picnic and, with little children and dogs running around, sometimes sitting atop. I wanted people to feel the Red Mare and Foal s strength as well as the bond of a mother to a child. I strove to show their interdependence, their tenderness and gentleness as well as to imply a maternal 9

10 TREE OF LIFE O n the front cover, is an image of a special pro-bono sculptural piece I completed in August 2012 called the Tree of Life for Ronald McDonald House, Randwick. The House relies on donations to assist children who have life threatening illnesses. To raise donated funds people buy a leaf, having their name inscribed on the surface of the leaf. To date, they have raised over $60,000 from the sculpture in the last 6 months. I can t believe it myself. This tree is made from over 500 hand braided stainless steel wires and is 3 metres high, 2 metres wide and.5 metres deep and is positioned at the entrance to the House. The stainless steel leaves in the sculpture have a very interesting story. Here is the historical and cultural background to the Tree of Life. It appears entwined with the Biblical Tree of Knowledge and over time became related to the apple tree. After a bit more research, I found the apple tree which has a direct bearing on the modern world s birth of scientific knowledge... the tree under which Sir Isaac Newton sat which lead to his development of the theory of gravity, was still alive and well. It is well recognised that this moment and Newton s resulting work was a pivotal point in the quest for modern knowledge. A few phone calls later to Woolsthorpe Manor, Sir Isaac Newton s homestead in Lincolnshire, the manager of this National Trust home agreed to send a few leaves derived from the gravity apple tree. These leaves were then used to make the template for the series of 300 stainless steel leaves now being attached to the tree sculpture. Written by Gary Grant Gary Grant Tree of Life Background to Ronald Macdonald House for Children. Ronald McDonald House, Randwick is but one of 300 around the world and is associated with the major children s hospital in Sydney, the Prince of Wales Children s Hospital.
