It opened in 1898 with the historical exhibition Croatian Salon, which laid the foundation for Croatian modernism. The pavilion was built in the neo-style spirit at the end of the 19 th century thanks to Viennese architects H. Hellmer and F. Fellner. The Archaeological Museum in Zagreb was founded in 1846 and is located in the historical Vranyczany-Hafner Palace. The museum maintains over 400,000 items, while the collections are systematically arranged in the following categories: Prehistoric, Ancient, Medieval, Egyptian, and Numismatic. Of importance are the archaeological rarities from ancient Greece and Egypt, their Glass Collection, and collection of art from the Far East. The collection contains about 18,000 archival objects: drawings, sketches, models, photographs, slides, correspondence, and other documents related to the history of Croatian architecture. The Glyptotheque is located in a former leather factory, and was founded in 1937 with the purpose of collecting and presenting artistic sculptural works. Almost eight decades later, it now stores the largest collection of sculptures in Croatia; it also gives visitors an insight into the sheer creativity of sculpting from the antiquity period to modern times. A sculpture park can also be found within the museum complex. 08

This is the only specialist museum in Croatia in the field of Education; a permanent exhibition presents Croatian Education and Pedagogy in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries. The Museum also has the Davorin Trstenjak Pedagogical Library, which houses more than 40,000 books. The Croatian Naïve Art Museum was founded in 1952 and is considered the first museum of naïve art in the world. The Geologic department keeps diverse collections of fossils with more than 300,000 museum objects from all Croatian regions, whilst the Zoological department has approximately 1,135,000 copies of various animals. The museum collections include stored railway vehicles and parts, machinery, and equipment used in the construction of railways, telecommunications devices, official uniforms, and personal documents. The national ethnographic heritage section is presented in two parts; the first is dedicated to Croatian Folk Costumes, folk art, and handicrafts. The centre was founded by the Dražen Petrović Foundation in 2006 and is situated next to the basketball hall that also carries the name of Croatia s arguably most famous sporting star (1964 to 1993). The museum collection holds various objects relating to Petrović s life and career, whilst the permanent exhibition follows Dražen s life in chronological order with an added ten-minute film projection. 16

The museum provides an insight into the natural heritage of the animal world of our region and presents a history of hunting and Croatian hunting culture in particular. The permanent exhibition consists of several collections: trophies, fossils, eggs, mammals, birds, hunting weapons, hunting badges, medals, and a collection of stuffed wild species and reptiles from Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The Croatian Association of Artists (CAA) was founded in 1868 and its members have always included artists of different generations and artistic expressions. It pays tribute to the historical development of telegraphy and telephony, but also various postal services of yesteryear. The Museum offers visitors a nostalgic encounter with telephones and telephone exchanges from the time of our forefathers, post horns and chests for the transfer of shipments as well as stories about the first phone in Croatia amongst others. With unrivalled exhibition projects of national and international art, and a wide scope of work which affects the appearance of artistic and cultural events from prehistory to the present, Klovićevi continues to constantly intrigue domestic and foreign audiences with a new and different view of historical and contemporary art. 20

Today, it is an inevitable stop for lovers of Modern and Contemporary Art. The long list of artists that make up the collection of art, among others include Alem Korkut, Braco Dimitrijević, Ivan Fijolić, Ivana Franke, Ivan Kožarić, Lovro Artuković, Slaven Tolj, Vlasta Žanić, and Marija Ujević. Vranyczany in 1883, the Modern Gallery is located in a prestigious palace on the west side of Zrinjevac and according to the design of Viennese architect Otto Hofer. The new permanent exhibition is displayed in 30 halls on two floors and includes 800 works of Croatian paintings, sculptures, and new media art works. The Museum also has a valuable collection of furniture, glass, sculpture, paintings, and others. The Meštrović Atelier along with the Meštrović Gallery, the complex Kaštelet-Crikvine in Split, and the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer in Otavice, is part of the Ivan Meštrović Museums. The collection includes sculptures in marble, stone, wood, and bronze. It also holds reliefs, drawings, and graphics that were created in the first four decades of his career. 24

The Museum also takes care of artistic donations from the City of Zagreb. The permanent exhibition entitled Collection in Motion consists of approximately 600 exhibited works. The collection documents the life of Croatia s Blessed Cardinal and Archbishop Alojzije Stepinac. It details his personal objects and vestments, liturgical vessels, golden gifts donated by the Pope, as well as other items. Its founding in 1977 has also contributed to the discovery of the valuable archaeological site on the Kuzelin hill in In addition to the collection, the museum preserves and exhibits archaeological, historical, artistic, and documentary items whilst always engaging in conservation and restoration activities as well as education. The permanent exhibition of the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum consists of seven departments: Transformation, Transport, Mining, Geology and Oil, Astronautics, the demonstration cabinet of Nikola Tesla, Agriculture, and Firefighting. There is a model of a real mine built under the museum building with the length of the corridor more than three hundred metres long. 32

Varied and rich museum holdings are stored in its 20 collections, and as part of the Museum there are nine collections donated to the city of Zagreb. The event Live Pictures is traditionally held on the last carnival weekend, and it is interesting because it involves all museum employees and their guests, who are dressed in costumes depicting historical characters of Zagreb. The museum contains a unique collection of devices used for torture and execution from ancient times to present day. With more than 70 instruments and devices, these definitely display the image of violence throughout history. The museum promotes the values of respect and diversity and visitors are given an opportunity to enter the world of the blind. They can also learn the basics of reading and writing in Braille and experience the shape and contours of various sculptures through the tactile method. 18 32 Info Info Public transport Zagreb s public transport has a comprehensive system of tram and bus lines. Both transport systems have daily services beginning at 4-5am through to 11-12pm. Several lines operate throughout the night but at less regular intervals; for all schedules and daily timetables visit Identical tickets are used for both bus and tram costing 10 kuna for daily transport and 15 kuna for the night rides. From the moment you board and insert the ticket in the automatic stamping machine, it is only valid for a one-way journey lasting 90 minutes maximum. A daily ticket costs 30 kuna and allows one day s unlimited travel until 4am the following day. This could prove to be a good choice. If you would like to go sightseeing in the Upper Town, you can buy a ticket for 4 kuna and ride in the popular Uspinjača (Funicular), the 66m lift which is scheduled every 10 minutes and operates from 6:30am to 9:50pm. For bike lovers there is a nextbike public bikes service with points around the city from where to take and to leave a bike. Registration is obligatory via different channels, and so is a valid debit or credit card. For all procedures and prices check Zagreb also has a handful of reasonably priced taxi companies. Seljan Brothers through Rainforests and Desert Ethnographic Museum Zagreb Croatian explorers Mirko and Stevo Seljan, better known as the Seljan brothers, left an immense mark on the exploration of Africa and South America, being one of the first Europeans ever to set foot in these distant continents. The exhibition presents their trials and tribulations with numerous objects, photos, letters, diaries and notebooks that the Seljan brothers collected on their expeditions and eventually donated to their homeland. Zagreb Design Week May The fifth edition of Zagreb Design Week (ZDW), the biggest design festival in Croatia, will present and overview of Croatian design and will be held at 50 different locations in and around Zagreb. Visitors can spend hours exploring design and fashion trends through workshops, exhibitions, lectures, films and concerts, a fashion market with clothing and jewellery, as well as food design and a furniture fair, just to name a few. Roger Waters Arena Zagreb This spring Croatian capital will become one of those lucky cities to host the Wall Live world tour which, as of 2017, has become the highest-grossing tour of all time by a solo artist, the co-founder of the legendary English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, Roger Waters. Besides being one of the key members of one of the most successful groups in musical history, Waters has also worked on solo projects and toured extensively with his solo act since Giacomo Puccini Turandot May Croatian National Theatre Deemed as one of his best, Puccini s final opera in three acts returns with this co-production between the Opera of the Croatian National Theatre and the famous Italian Sferisterio Opera Festival in Macerata! This lavish work based on the German adaptation of the Chinese princess Turandot is filled with memorable arias and will premiere in the Croatian capital. The distinguished Italian Piero Giorgio Morandi will conduct proceedings. André Rieu Arena Zagreb Just a few months after a remarkably successful performance, the insanely popular Dutch violinist and conductor, the King of Waltz André Rieu is returning to Zagreb! The charismatic virtuoso is best known as the founder of the world s biggest private orchestra, the waltz-playing Johann Strauss Orchestra. EXIT Theatre Summer Nights June August Atrium of the Museum of Arts and Crafts For the 8 th year in a row, Zagreb summer night s heat up the art scene with glowing arts and acts in the beautiful atrium of the Museum of Arts and Crafts. Since city theatres are closed during summer, the Exit Theatre kicks in with vast performances for those eager for theatrical events. The repertoire also has non-verbal shows and theatre in English too. Floraart Bundek Lake The wonderful lush green setting of Lake Bundek will once again be the venue of Croatia s biggest horticultural seven-day event which gathers landscape architects, florists, gardeners and artists. Over 300,000m 2 of exhibition space will feature numerous plants, flowers and decorative garden equipment, with competitions being held in various categories. The Fireworks Festival June Bundek Lake Every June, the Zagreb skies are lit up with amazing and spectacular fireworks, making the city look even more stunning and magical than usual. This year, the fun and ever so popular International Fireworks Festival will be held for the 18 th time and once again, presents some of the best fireworks displays in the world. So far, an abundant amount of renowned pyrotechnic teams have performed at the festival: from Germany, Italy and Austria to China, Russia and the Philippines. 22 nd International Festival Cest is d Best Various locations across city Croatia s first and thus far most successful street festival has been held since 1997, attracting hundreds of performers and thousands of visitors from across the globe. Performers do acrobatics, animal tricks, balloon twisting, caricatures, clowning, comedy, contortions, escapology, dance... Summer at the MSU June / July Roof terrace of the Museum of Contemporary Art The daily multimedia programme consists of an unusual blend of music, films, exhibition, artistic performances, and for the first time a literary forum. The Concert on the Roof programme will feature seven concerts on Saturdays with artists such as Swiss band Yello and Croatia s Josipa Lisac and Hladno pivo. The best movies from the season will also be screened, whilst the Literary Forum includes authors who will interpret their own works (poetry and short stories). Zagreb while it wasn t Before the year Archaeological Museum in Zagreb In 1990, an interesting project entitled Zagreb while it wasn t before the year 1094 was launched with the aim of locating historical sites and other discoveries which precede the time it became a city. To date, thirteen designated sites with archaeological and palaeontological remains have been found. However, instead of bringing the found artefacts from the site to a museum where they would be exhibited, it was done in reverse from the museum back to the locality. Zagreb Picnic June - August Maksimir Park Crave the outdoors? Then head to one of the most beautiful parks in Europe Maksimir Park where every Saturday during summer the Kameno sjedalo meadow at the Second Lake between 10am and 8pm (unless it rains) is filled with a relaxed atmosphere in an idyllic setting that houses lounge music, an open-air library and board games. It lasts for one hour with costumed historical and fictional characters taken from novels by the famous Croatian writer Marija Jurić Zagorka leading the way with a lantern in hand. The World Festival of Animated Film Animafest Zagreb Various locations across city Ever since 1972 when Animafest was born, it continues to spread the joy and wonder that stems from the world of animated film, exposing the best of the best in current global animation. The festival offers an abundance of events, competitions, retrospectives, lectures, presentations, exhibitions and workshops. Art Park June - October Art Park was once an abandoned park which has now been transformed into a beautiful green oasis that is located in the very city centre, between the Strossmayer Promenade and Tomićeva Street. Great vibes and a cool atmosphere with music jams, film screenings, different workshops and even yoga to drawing classes are on offer. Local and international artists have already left their mark at this open art gallery and will, certainly, continue to do so in the upcoming years. Rationalists, Aesthetes, Democrats and Architects Who Stir Up Excitement Museum of Contemporary Art This exhibition is a result of collaboration between the Kunsthaus Graz and Zagreb s Museum of Contemporary Art in an attempt to show the similarities between the modern architecture that have shaped both Graz and Zagreb and their architectural influences. The exhibition will showcase 3D models, photographs and sketches by contemporary artists and architects reflecting modern urbanism, expressionist architecture and the impact of new technologies on space design. This exhibition will explore different aspects and concerns of artists who practice collage in various media: from paper to paper, text to photography and film, collage as critical practice or experiment, the deconstruction of an image and film, contemporary collage... Peter Bence Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall One of the most exciting and most impressive pianists of today, the Hungarian crossover pianist virtuoso Peter Bence is performing in Zagreb for the first time. A child prodigy, who started playing piano at the age of two, wrote his first composition at the age of seven and recorded his first album when he was eleven. His CV says it all and after posting his first video online in 2015, he has since become a world sensation. Slatki gušti Festival Zrinjevac If you have a sweet tooth and fancy cakes, pastries, cookies and alike, then you ve come to the right place! This festival gathers the best cake and pastry shops from Zagreb at the most famous park in the capital, Zrinjevac Park. Miroslav Krleža Festival For the 7 th consecutive year, the Miroslav Krleža Festival will be held in the Miroslav and Bela Krleža Memorial Hall and across other locations in Zagreb. Miroslav Krleža was one the greatest, if not the greatest Croatian writer and playwright of not only the 20 th century but of all time. His timeless novels, poems, short stories, plays and diaries depict what a true genius he was. The festival is devoted to Krleža and his works with plays, recitals and awards up for grabs. Iron Maiden Arena Zagreb The Legacy of the Beast World Tour is inspired by their mobile game and the comic book under the same name. With celebrations occurring across the year, the central exhibition will be this dedication to the most famous Croatian painter ever, Vlaho Bukovac and his Parisian professor Alexander Cabanel. The exhibition will include major masterpieces by Vlaho Bukovac as well as art work by Alexander Cabanel loaned from French museums. The 27 th Zagreb Marathon Pick and choose from the 5km, 21km or 42km races, otherwise broken down into the citizen s race, half-marathon or marathon categories. Refreshment stations are aplenty and even though there are those who strictly participate to win, there are also those who claim that success in being able to finish the coarse. Biennial Exhibition of Croatian Design 1718 October - November Museum of Arts and Crafts For the 10 th time running this is a platform that shows the most significant works in the field of design that have emerged in Croatia in the last couple of years. The exhibition will showcase the overall creative work in the world of professional design starting from market orientated projects to those made within a non-profit, cultural and research context.
