2 Alot has been happening in the Resale scene in Houston. Many people have been noticing Resale Houston Magazine & I have noticed a lot of Resale endeavors & highlights in the news including Patricia Lopez series of Stretch your Dollar on Channel 13. Patricia Lopez pointed out a new Resale Venture called Just Between Friends. You can check out their website They have 6 huge children s consignment events going on throughout the Houston area over the next year. Among many other exciting resale ventures going on in Houston, Tara McClaran contacted me with some questions about resale shops & turns out she is on The Board of Directors for a really neat project. The Fairy Godmother Project of Houston is a non-profit group that accepts donations of used formal wear (bridesmaid, prom, even church dresses) and provides them to senior high schoolers that might have trouble purchasing prom attire on their own. Last, but definitely not least, the first airing of the show Making Marry by the Style Network s Peter Perfect making over one of Houston s own Resale Bridal Boutiques, Marry Go Round. 8 Resale Prospers in an Uncertain Economy With the economy going into a recession, more job losses every day, less money available to spend what is a shopper to do? The new buzzword is RESALE. Resale has always been a recession-proof business, says Adele Meyer, Executive Director of the National Association of Resale & Thrift Shops. Business steadily increases during down economic times We are one segment of retail posting impressive sales figures in a slumping economy A recent survey of NARTS members revealed that 85.8% of the responding stores experienced an increase in new customers and 74.5% had an increase in new suppliers (consignment/seller customers) Resale/consignment stores have grown in number by about 5% annually in recent years and is a $200 billion dollar a year industry, Meyer reported. Articles about penny-pinching shoppers taking a second look at secondhand stores have captured media attention across the board, including CNN Money, Kiplinger s Magazine, Associated Press, Good Housekeeping, Forbes, Newsweek, Business Week, the Today Show, plus dozens of local community publications. The Houston Chronicle featured the advantages of consignment/thrift shopping in their Saturday, January 3rd STAR section. It described a lady who said, My favorite shops are consignment and thrift shops I buy everything from furniture to clothes. She has decorated her home with furnishings from second hand stores, thus earning recognition on several design-centric websites. I love to rummage and hunt when I shop, she said. Price is also a big consideration for her. For the price of going out to eat, you can buy a whole new outfit! She divides her time between thrift and consignment shops. The consummate second-hand shopper will shop both thrift and consignment shops. Thrift stores sell donated items and tend to have more variety and cheaper prices than the for profit consignment shops; however, some shoppers prefer less variety and better quality merchandise, including the high-end brands more often found in consignment shops. As I visit consignment shops I have noticed a big influx of merchandise coming into these stores. People who need cash are unloading possessions to sell outright or on consignment. (CNN reports that pawnshops are doing a booming business also). Children s stores are especially full. Shoppers have many shopping choices today. Retailers are closing stores, going out of business, and offering their merchandise at deep discounts. The Internet has many bargain shopping sites to choose from, so why should you turn to secondhand stores? Because the potential of discovering a truly great bargain for your home or wardrobe could be right in your neighborhood! And finding it is half the fun! It just may be caused by those big, fluffy, sparkling, gorgeous-when-youbought-it prom dresses and the darling bridesmaid dresses your sisters, cousins, and friends promised you could wear again. Well, it s time to jump on the Get Organized band wagon and put those aging spacetakers to a better use. And what better use than for them to be re-used and worn again?? That s right - you can get in on the Go Green movement too! The Fairy Godmother Project of Houston is a non-profit organization that accepts donations of used prom dresses and other formal wear and accessories, then turns them over to Houston area high school seniors whose financial and living situations are making it difficult for them to dress for their prom. The annual Shopping Weekend is coming up March 28th-29th, 2009 at Cunningham Elementary School in Bellaire, where hundreds of senior girls will shop from their donated selection of formal and party dresses to find that special one that will make their prom dreams come true. So clean out your closets, sort through your stash of used-only-once eyeshadows, and do something good with all those bridesmaid dresses that you never quite found another occassion to wear. Nothing to donate? Cash always works! They use cash donations to rent tuxes for the guys and purchase plussized dresses. And, they also need smiling faces and fashionistas to help out with Shopping Weekend. 29th. Remaining dresses will be sold to the public at are-youkidding-me prices.
