2 Typography Whys Impact I believe this photo illustrates the typeface of impact because of how close together the letters themselves are. The designer needed the words to stand out because of the fluorescent yellow vests. The type could possibly be bolded; it would make more of a statement. Black letters pop on the yellow and are very easy to read; having the words in the upper center of the vest ensures that people will know who is there more easily. Your attention is captured. LAO SANGAM MN Like many places in New York City, Penn Station is classic because of the services it provides: transporting people to and from their desired destination. You can tell from the photo that the building is older which means the font shown is more classic. The font of Lao Sangam MN is a clean and crisp font which works to not take away from the building structure itself. The building front is made out of glass, the tet is spaced so if the glass were to hit the sun, it would still be readable. Futura Unlike the other eamples on this page, this banner looks homemade or commissioned. You can easily tell that the designer was trying to make a statement. With the futura font, it could be a metaphor that those who live in St. Louis plan to stay for the future. The graphic o really works with this design, it grabs your attention. Even though the photo is in black and white, you can tell the type is black because of how big and bold it is. This sign keeps focus. Bodoni 72 Bodoni 72 is a very classic font. It is sophisticated and gives off a feeling of wealth. The Four Seasons could not go wrong with this font. It is recognizable and is very cohesive with the brand itself. This font is used for many things Four Seasons; it is on all their signs and communication materials. In a way it gives off a feeling of old-time wealth, especially because the name is risen from a gold plate. The name placement is interesting: separated from the logo. Arial Black For many companies, the font of arial black is very effective. It is easy to see from a distance and is big/bold. It s a very clean cut font. The font is effective, even more so now that the words are white with a black stroke; it pops on the yellow/orange bulldozer. I think the company could have done a better job with placement. It works fine on the back, but not on the side. The designer made a good choice of not kerning the letters because it is now more cohesive. Helvetica For this tech/gadget conference the helvetica font makes perfect sense. It is clean, simple, and strong. It doesn t detract from the message of the conference, but brings an air of boldness to it. Even though the photo is in black and white it is easy to tell that the letters are white on a black background. The placement of the tet is presented nicely, as is the all capitalized letters; you can see it is there, but allows you to stay more focused on the people attending.

4 History of Design Art Nouveau Decorated Poem In the late 1800s, and into the early 1900s, when people thought of art, Art Nouveau was generally the first thing that came to mind. It was popular at the turn of the century due to people s rising interest in simple, yet decorative style. Art Nouveau brought along a new sensibility and made art more delicate/decorative. At this time designers got inspiration from various Japanese techniques. Many of the pieces created during this time featured flowers with simple lines and flowing curves. Help us kick off another century of stewardship August 25, tourists visit at least one of the 407 national parks on a yearly basis. It s time commemorate the centennial in a new way. The best way to share the history is through a special edition paper currency. While the design is simple, it shows the beauty of all the parks in our country. The parks are home to some of the most special creatures in the world; they are ones that guests often see when on vacation. On the front of each bill is an animal commonly seen; the different colors of each bill help differentiate the dollar value. In the corner of the bill will be braille dollar amounts so those with a vision disability will be able to easily use the bills. The back of each will host the same image and commemorative tet, but in each bills respective color. The bills will be printed on thicker paper as a way to stand out and be unique from previous designs. Yes the design is simple, but it is fun to look at and a great way to celebrate an organization that has helped so many people, animals, and environments. 7 Wine Label A Fresh New Wine Ripley Gardens Sauvignon Blanc, 2000 Ripley Gardens is bringing freshness back into the wine world. Over the years wineries have lost their passion for creating unique products and consumers have noticed. It is the Gardens job to inspire and help bring that passion back. Specializing in white wines, our goal is to bring out the fruity flavors while also creating a dry and classy taste. One of the reasons customers are going to reach for our bottle is because of the design. The watercolor hummingbird is very inviting and appealing. People like when they can instantly recognize a brand on the shelves; customers don t want to have to search for a name to know which product they are picking up. Our label is placed lower on the bottle than traditional wine bottles because the label is so delicate; we feel that the label blends better down lower. The hummingbird, while easily recognizable, tells that the wine is going to be more flowery/fruity; the aroma, when you take a sip, will be one to remember. Ripley Gardens Sauvignon Blanc, 2000

11 Client/Designer THE GREAT GATSBY BALL TICKET & CARTON AMANDA GROFF THE GREAT GATSBY BALL The Great Gatsby Ball The Grand Hotel April 15, 8PM TICKET CARTON TICKET Why This As a designer I ve always been drawn to the patterns of art deco and Gatsby. When I came across the request for a Gatsby themed project I couldn t look away. I feel the design I created is the best and should be chosen for use because it emulates Gatsby and the 1920 s while also keeping it simple. The pattern is one you may see on a movie poster, but toned down. Inspiration was drawn from Baz Luhrmann s interpretation on The Great Gatsby. For the invitation carton, I kept it simple because you don t want to bore your audience or give them all the information before they ve even opened the package. The simple gold and event title, along with the black invitation carton draw you in and keep attention. Brief The items requested were a ticket and invitation carton themed for a Great Gatsby Ball. The carton goes into the shipping bo. The needed the ticket to emulate glitz and glamor, while also showing the theme as Gatsby 1920 s. It needed to be obvious that there would be a red carpet, paparazzi and themed entertainment. Information and Details Requsted The only information that was provided was the 8PM time and vague hotel location. It was also requested that the colors used be black, gold and cream.
