HELLO This season there are some rare treats in store for visitors to Derby Museums. In February we ll be one of 12 regional UK museums simultaneously hosting exhibitions of work by the Renaissance Master Leonardo da Vinci. The images belong to the Royal Collection Trust and it will be the first time they will be displayed outside London. Leonardo was a true polymath an artist, engineer and scientist exactly the qualities we at Derby Museums promote as we are for the thinker and maker in everyone. Our spring exhibition, as part of the biennial FORMAT International Photography Festival, is a display of work by the Derby documentarian Maurice Broomfield. We are featuring a selection of his work capturing industry and factory life in the 1950s and 60s. The exhibition features work from the Victoria and Albert Museum collections as well as prints and cameras that belonged to Broomfield himself. At Derby Silk Mill, the site of the world s first factory, building work is well underway to transform the building into the UK s first Museum of Making. You can get a taste of what will be on offer when the new Museum opens in 2020 by following The Makory, our Mobile Museum of Making, as it travels around Derby and the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site bringing displays and activities to the communities of Derbyshire. Finally, at Pickford s House, we are embarking on a year-long season of costume exhibitions, based around outfits bequeathed by Marchioness Curzon of Kedleston. Dresses, shoes and accessories will be on display, featuring original haute couture clothing from the 1920s and 30s and including exquisite gowns from Chanel, Hartnell, Callot Soeurs and Molyneux of London. Our programme of visionary thinking, grit and glamour should provide a wealth of reasons to make Derby Museums people s first choice for culture in the city. Executive Director, Derby Museums 3

OBJECTS OF LOVE, HOPE AND FEAR: A WORLD COLLECTION Welcome to Objects of Love, Hope and Fear: A World Collection; a friendly new gallery full to bursting with ordinary and extraordinary objects from around the world. The exhibition is built on a foundation of shared experiences that are common to people across the world and these values, emotions and actions have shaped and informed every step of the project. The room is arranged into seven zones entitled Consume, Believe, Create, Conflict, Furnish, Adorn and Communicate. Each of the objects you ll experience has a history of human connection, having been crafted, used, loved, lost, stolen, collected, stored or hidden and now displayed with the greatest of respect. They connect to historic events full of horror, joy and everything in between. From talking drums and wooden pillows, to terrible weapons designed to torture enslaved workers. Each zone will offer both comfort and discomfort and we challenge you to not find something that captivates your head and heart. Thousands of people worked closely with us to co-produce this stunning display of over 1400 objects. We are indebted to everyone who offered their time, energy, skill, honesty and knowledge. The people on the streets of Derby, the co-production volunteers and new friends across the globe have cleaned, photographed, researched, interpreted and displayed this important collection of objects. It is through being open with each other that we can fully connect. We invite you to explore and admire the objects and to take time to talk with other visitors in the gallery to discover new perspectives and different points of view. One person s object of comfort will symbolise oppression to someone else; find out what people think and why. Come and participate in the gallery and make it your own. 4

LOOK OUT FOR... Hands On Histories A set of seven suitcases, full of incredible objects to hold and explore, will pop up in the gallery. The objects they contain are not replicas, they re the real deal! Friendly co-production volunteers will share their story of the gallery and support you in your quest to learn, experience and encounter. Objects of Love Share a photograph of something you wouldn t be without; a belonging that symbolises love to you or something that you keep close to your heart. Tweet it with the tag #objectsoflove and it will appear in the digital collection of love in the gallery. A charismatic telephone Pick up our friendly telephone full of welcome messages. We ve recorded greetings in a variety of languages that the kind people of Derby have left for visitors to the gallery. #CityofSanctuary Soundscape Experience a compelling soundscape that drifts and swirls around the gallery. The music was co-produced by talented composer Poetical Machine and contains recordings of visitors playing the historic instruments you see on display. There s plenty of space to dance too! Object Walks Some of the objects you ll see in the gallery headed out onto the streets of Derby with us in a quest to connect with as many people as we could. Historic combs visited barber shops and shoes headed into shoe shops. Check out the interactive map that documents some of those walks and the people we met along the way: derbymuseums.org. Reflect and respond This vibrant gallery has been created with people for people. The space is yours and we hope that you ll find time to relax, react, discuss and respond while you re here. The bookshelves contain reading material and a set of trails designed by co-production volunteers. Leave your thoughts about the objects and themes that matter to you. Take time to talk with someone new. 5

THE MUSEUM OF MAKING Derby Silk Mill is midway through a five year 16.4m programme to create the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Derby City Council, Arts Council England and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership. The Silk Mill is now closed to the public for events, activities and venue hire. The building will undergo a full re-development during 2019; work that has already begun with the removal for specialist restoration of the Silk Mill s iconic 18th century Bakewell Gates. The new Museum of Making is scheduled to re-open fully in 2020, bringing thousands of visitors to the city each year. It will display fascinating items from Derby s rich industrial history, inspired by the makers of the past, made by the makers of today, and designed to empower makers of the future through inspirational learning programmes and activities. If you are interested in helping to make the Museum of Making please contact pippa@derbymuseums.org for volunteer and co-production opportunities. We would love your support! 7 EXHIBITIONS Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing Friday 1 February - Monday 6 May Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm; Sunday 12-4pm Bank Holiday Monday (6 May) 12-4pm The Royal Collection contains one of the world s greatest collections of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. This spring, 12 of these exquisite drawings will travel to Derby for a special exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of the Renaissance Master s death. Never-before seen in the city, the works have been gathered together to reflect the full range of Leonardo s interests from painting, sculpture, architecture and music to anatomy, engineering, cartography, geology and botany. As so much of his life s work was unrealised or destroyed, it is only in these drawings, and a handful of related manuscripts, that Leonardo s greatest achievements survive. This exhibition is part of an unparalleled nationwide event, with simultaneous shows of Leonardo s drawings in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Southampton and Sunderland, providing the widest-ever UK audience the opportunity to see the work of this extraordinary artist. 8 EXHIBITIONS White Heat of British Industry, 1950s-60s: Photographs by Maurice Broomfield Friday 15 March - Monday 6 May Maurice Broomfield ( ) made spectacular photographs of British industry, showing skilled men and women proudly at work in factories across the UK. Produced in the 1950s and 1960s, they reveal a workforce in an era of rapid technological transition. Broomfield was born to a working-class family in Draycott, Derbyshire, leaving school at 15 to work as a lathe operator at Rolls-Royce. He attended Derby Art College in the evenings before becoming Britain s premier industrial photographer, drawing inspiration from the paintings of Joseph Wright of Derby and modernist photography from the German Bauhaus design schools. Images in the exhibition are from Broomfield s archive housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, alongside works from Derby Museum and Art Gallery. The exhibition is curated by Martin Barnes, V&A Senior Curator of Photographs. A selection of Broomfield s original cameras complement the photographs, loaned by his son, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield. 9 FORMAT19 - FOREVER\\NOW Exhibition Friday 15 March - Saturday 4 May Pickford s House FORMAT International Photography Festival, established in 2004, is the UK s largest international biennale of contemporary photography, taking place in venues throughout Derby. FORMAT19 includes exhibitions, talks, conferences, performances, workshops, portfolio reviews and more. Curated around the theme of FOREVER\\ NOW, the festival explores global perspectives on memory, archives and the enduring moment through incredible works by new and world-leading artists. A selection of these works feature in two exhibitions presented at Pickford s House Museum. FORMAT is organised by QUAD and the University of Derby: formatfestival.com. Anton Kusters: The Blue Skies Project The Blue Skies Project by Anton Kusters is an installation of 1078 mounted, peel-apart Polaroids of blue skies, accompanied by a 13- year real-time tracking audio piece created by Ruben Samama. The images were made between 2012 and 2017 at the last known locations of every former Nazi Germany concentration camp. One thousand and seventyeight official concentration camps existed throughout Europe during the Nazi rule in Germany from 1933 to The artist comments that the blue skies in the project collectively bear witness to the systematic trauma that was happening below. antonkusters.com/theblueskiesproject Radical Visions: Camerawork Revisited Curated by Four Corners This exhibition reactivates the archives of Camerawork magazine ( ), situating its radical approaches to photojournalism within the context of our current socialpolitical moment. Emerging from the 1970s community arts movement, Camerawork did not view photography as a specialist practice, instead asserting the medium s potential to effect social change. Inspired by the 1930s Worker-Photography Movement, its grassroots approach documented the political struggles of Thatcherera Britain. Work by local people was shown alongside established practitioners including Jo Spence, Daniel Meadows, Susan Meiselas, Peter Kennard and many others. Contemporary photographers supported by Four Corners will be invited to submit images which speak to Camerawork s ethos. Selected images will be projected into the space, creating a dialogue between two eras. 9

EXHIBITIONS Fashion House Saturday 16 February - January 2020 Pickford s House A rare glimpse inside the private wardrobe of Grace Elvina, Marchioness Curzon of Kedleston. This is a wonderful opportunity to indulge in sumptuous, elegant evening wear from the Jazz Age. Featuring spectacular 1920s and 30s couture gowns from the fashion houses of Chanel, Worth, Hartnell and Vionnet, this represents the epitome of style from the golden age of glamour. Looks Sew Good: Magazines and Dressmaking Patterns from the 1930s Saturday 18 May - Saturday 7 September Pickford s House The 1930s was an era when Hollywood started to take over from the couturiers and high glamour was in. To acquire such a wardrobe, however, was well out of the reach of most, creating a gap in the market that was filled by home dressmaking. Ladies journals inspired women to deploy their sewing skills to emulate the styles they saw at the cinema and on showreels of society events. This exhibition looks at some of the magazines and patterns from the Pickford s House collection that encouraged women to transform what they saw into reality. 10

Brick History: A World of LEGO Awaits Friday 24 May - Sunday 8 September Brick History takes famous moments from history and imagines them in LEGO bricks how many do you recognise? From DNA and the Big Bang to Mozart, Martin Luther King and mobile phones, LEGO artist Warren Elsmore and his team have created a celebration of our shared stories, struggles, and triumphs, made from everyone s favourite Danish toy. From tiny recreations of Concorde and the Titanic that could fit in your hand, to a 1.5m square medieval castle bustling with activity, there are models to make you smile, to make you think, and to inspire you to build a better world. 11

In the summer of 1940, Britain stood perilously close to invasion by the Nazis, but what would a British occupation have looked like? We know because, for five years during the Second World War, 50,000 British subjects lived through just that. Acclaimed historian Sarah Knott analyses the real experience of motherhood for women across the ages, from the South Carolina field slave to a 1950s suburban housewife, from a royal mistress pregnant with a king s first son to a 1970s feminist.
