3 HELLO This Spring there is so much to see in Derby Museums from home and abroad, giving both a local and global perspective on our city. In March, as part of FORMAT 2017, we will host a beautiful array of photography from W. W. Winter of Derby, perhaps the oldest photographic studio in the world. We are also encouraging visitors, if they have used any Derby photographic studio, to share their photos and stories as we create Your Photo Archive. In May we present the Music of Courtly India in partnership with the British Museum and Derby based arts organisations Artcore and Surtal Arts. It highlights music, poetry and paintings of the 17th century. There will be talks and activities which will explore our links with India and there will be a chance to make music and tell stories inspired by our collections. At Pickford s House in May, we re showing some beautiful Japanese art from our collections. These works are highly symbolic, highlighting the important Buddhist belief in the harmony of nature. Also at Pickford s we commemorate and explore the legacy of the Pentrich Rising of 1817, cited as the first truly industrial working-class revolt against repressive government. From mid June, a selection of Vivienne Westwood shoes will be displayed around Pickford's House, contrasting against the elegant Georgian backdrop. We are honoured that The Silk Mill has been chosen as a venue to host Weeping Window, as part of the Poppies Tour, commemorating the centenary of the Great War. Created by the Derbyshire born artist, Paul Cummins and designer, Tom Piper, the display will cascade from the campanile of The Silk Mill. There will be a range of events and an education programme for people to reflect on the legacy of World War One. This season s programme really shows that Derby Museums offers a gamut of ways for people to reflect and explore their place, in the world. 12 9 June - 23 July Open 7 days 10am-5pm (Thursdays 10am-8pm) The Silk Mill Weeping Window is a cascade comprising several thousand handmade ceramic poppies seen pouring from a high window to the ground below; Wave is a sweeping arch of bright red poppy heads suspended on towering stalks. These two sculptures, by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, marking the centenary of the outbreak of war, are now brought to audiences at venues across the country by NOW as part of the Poppies tour. As with all NOW projects, the presentation of these sculptures to new audiences across the UK aims to prompt a new, nationwide dialogue around the legacy of the First World War. The breath-taking sculptures were initially conceived as the key dramatic sculptural elements in the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London in the autumn of Over the course of their time at the Tower, the two sculptures were gradually surrounded by a vast field of ceramic poppies, each one planted by a volunteer in memory of the life of a British and Colonial soldier lost during the First World War. In their original setting they captured the public imagination and were visited by over five million people. Learning and Engagement Coming soon... Keep an eye on the website for details of activities, events and schools sessions. 12
