2 Exhibitions Tudor House & Garden Welcome... Gary Stevens: Now and Again 14 September - 23 December Titanic the Legend Until 30 August 2013 to Southampton Arts and Heritage autumn programme of new exhibitions, accompanied by a wide range of activities for adults. Due to Civic Centre repair and improvement works, access to the Art Gallery for users of larger electric wheelchairs will be limited from September. Please ensure that you telephone in advance of your visit to confirm access arrangements, call From Jan July 2013 the West-Wing galleries will be closed to the public while repairs are carried out; this includes The Perseus Series by Burne-Jones. Susan Cutts: Cherish Until 7 October Amassable: Collections with connections 13 October - 3 March 2013 Featuring collections borrowed from Southampton s residents and from the city s own extensive and diverse holdings, Amassable is a modern day cabinet of curiosity. This exhibition explores the stories behind collections, giving an insight into the personalities of the people who seek out, acquire, catalogue, display and care for their treasures. The ethos of collecting hasn t changed through time. The cigarette cards of the early 20th century were collected, used and traded in much the same way as Pokémon cards are now - collecting is today what it was yesterday. 3 Exhibitions Southampton City Art Gallery Gary Stevens: Now and Again 14 September - 23 December, Galleries 1-4 ART to DANCE 28 September January 2013, Gallery 8 Gary Stevens Now and Again: Westgate, Southampton (video still) 2012 the artist Now and Again - Gary Steven s largest solo show to date - sees new works displayed alongside retrospective and seminal video pieces. The exhibition will include two new works Containment and Now and Again: Westgate, Southampton alongside his acclaimed video installations Slow Life and Wake Up & Hide. The additional work, Containment has a sculptural quality to it where images intermingle on clusters of video monitors in the gallery. Stevens is a British artist who has developed an inter-related body of work that spans performances and video installations since An evening with Gary Stevens: Live performance & talk ART to DANCE workshop 2012, Photography Sarah Filmer ART to DANCE was first exhibited at Southampton City Art Gallery in January and now returns with exciting additions of the best works created by workshop participants and local artists inspired by the show. Photographs, drawings, sound bites and a specially commissioned film will accompany the exhibition of paintings and sculptures selected from the gallery s permanent collection by Mayuri Boonham, a leading British exponent of South Asian dance. ART to DANCE is part of Art at the Heart a partnership between Southampton s arts organisations and the City Council to bring exciting events and projects to Southampton s emerging Cultural Quarter. Making reference to landscape, still life and portraiture painting the new works explore complex representations of time, presence and absence. Peopled by local inhabitants, Now and Again: Westgate, Southampton has been filmed from four different perspectives at the Westgate in Southampton s Old Town, and will reveal an understated, uncanny aspect to everyday activity with an emerging sense of synchronicity. 4 Portrait Pairs 14 September January 2013, Gallery 6 This fresh look at portrait painting aims to illuminate the overt or hidden messages that artists include in their compositions in order to tell stories and present their sitters in a certain light. It features some of the Gallery s fine horse paintings brought together for the first time in many years. Alfred James Munnings ( ), After the Race Lost Star 11 August - 14 October Gallery Foyer Lost Star is a collection of prints produced by members of Red Hot Press print workshop in Southampton. It commemorates the centenary of the launch and subsequent loss of the RMS Titanic. The unique responses have been portrayed in a variety of printmaking techniques including linocut and etching. All the prints and a beautifully illustrated book to accompany the exhibition are available to buy. Meet the Artists Sun 7 Oct / 3 5pm / Gallery foyer / FREE Come along to hear some of artists from Red Hot Press talk about the Lost Star project and how and why they created their individual prints. Sarah Mander Titanic (Collograph) the artist Forthcoming Exhibitions The Philip Schlee Collection of Drawings 14 January - 21 April 2013 Exhibitions SeaCity Museum Don t miss... Titanic the Legend Continues until 30 August 2013 One hundred years after she sank, the story of Titanic continues to fascinate. It s been extensively researched, remembered, and commemorated. When did disaster become a romance? What lessons were learned? Should artefacts be salvaged from the wreck site? These are just some of the questions being posed in this exhibition. Local Titanic historians, writers, academics and scientists explore how and why the legend endures through the literature, films and merchandise that has proliferated from the story. Whether you have personal links to Titanic or your interest is academic, or even if you don t quite see what the fuss is all about, this exhibition also invites you to share your views at interactive stations in the gallery space.

5 Art and craft workshops How to book: Advanced booking is essential for all our activities. Telephone: LIFE DRAWING Saturday Life Drawing 22 Sept, 27 Oct, 24 Nov, 26 Jan, 16 Feb 11am 4pm / Art Gallery / 30 per session Please provide own pencils, charcoal, putty rubber, A2 and / or A1 paper. The workshops are suitable for all abilities apart from absolute beginners. Working closely with the models, artist Melanie Rose uses music, timed poses, movement and alternative drawing exercises to challenge our perceived ways of looking and mark making. The atmosphere in Melanie s classes is relaxed and friendly. PLEASE NOTE: Sept and Nov sessions will be whole day poses. As part of the Art Gallery s partnership with Adult and Community Learning, adults aged 19 and over may be eligible for a discount on workshop activities. Please ask for details. ARTS AND CRAFTS Introduction to wire figures Sun 16 Sept 11am 4pm / Art Gallery Education Room / 38 Join artist Debra Marsh and learn the art of drawing with wire. Spend the day working with a variety of wire, discovering the techniques and processes to create a stunning 3D figure. Drawing the figure in period costume Sun 23 Sept 11am 4pm Tudor House / 30 Enjoy a clothed figure drawing class with a difference, in the authentic surroundings of Tudor House, with a model dressed in Tudor period costume. The class is intended for people at all levels of ability and one-toone tuition will be offered for those who would welcome it. Led by artist Brian Reynolds. Some materials will be provided, bring extra pencils, etc if you wish. Colour rhythms painting and drawing workshop Sun 7 Oct / 11am 4pm Art Gallery Education Room / 30 Let your imagination run free, while learning skills of colour composition, watercolour brushwork and pastel drawing, inspired by early 20th century masters Klee and Kandinsky. Led by artist Abi Kremer. Please bring watercolour paper, a selection of brushes and paints. Spend your break enjoying a performance in the gallery as part of Music in the City. Get crafty with decoupage Sat 13 Oct / 10.30am 3.30pm Tudor House / 32 Using pretty and attractive papers, artist Kate Woodley-Smith will show you how to transform everyday objects into something stunning. We provide a box and a bracelet for you to decoupage but please bring another object of your choice such as a metal tin, tray or small item. Art of floristry Sun 2 Dec / Art Gallery 10.30am 4pm / 39 all materials provided Join Owen Lavin of Southampton based florists Little Lillies for this brilliant opportunity to take your floral arrangements beyond the vase for Christmas. Spend the day learning from and being inspired by Owen, who uses his experience as a trained fine artist to create stunning floral sculptures. The day will include looking at Owen s work, learning about organic materials, objects and seasonal flowers and creating your own festive floral frame

Led by trainer Dalia Vainorius. So dust off yor sewing machine and bring it along for this fun and informal session. Please bring your machine, all the attachments, threads, and some fabric to practice with. Christmas bead embroidery Sat 24 Nov / 10am 3.30pm / SeaCity Museum / 35 This inspirational workshop will show you how to use beads, oddments and scraps to create a beautiful embroidered brooch or pendant, with the help of designer Dalia Varinorius. All materials provided, but bring extra beads etc. if you wish. Glass vase painting Sat 1 Dec 10.30am 3.30pm Tudor House/ 35 Join artist Kate Woodley- Smith as she helps you create a fantastic vase for Christmas and learn techniques of painting on glass with a variety of brushes and utensils. All materials provided. Introduction to portrait drawing Sun 20 Jan am 4pm / Art Gallery Education Room / 30 This workshop will look at the basic elements of portrait drawing including composing the picture and using tone to reveal shape and form. No experience is necessary; the workshop offers a friendly and supportive environment, and aims to give you a great introduction to this fascinating and rewarding subject. Some materials will be provided, bring extra pencils, etc. if you wish Art to Dance Dance photography master-class Sat 29 Sept / 10.30am 4pm / Art Gallery / 60 tea & coffee provided Take part in a masterclass with world-renowned dance photographer Chris Nash. For budding photographers this is an amazing opportunity to explore the art of dance photography. This workshop will look at different ways to approach photographing dance and dancers in the setting of an art gallery, drawing inspiration from the surrounding artworks. Chris Nash will demonstrate different lighting and camera techniques, as well as explaining his approach to photographing movement. Participants will need to bring a DSLR camera (if possible with spare lenses) and a tripod. Art to Dance Filmmaking and the arts Sun 4 Nov / 2 3pm / Art Gallery / 2 3pm / FREE An exciting opportunity to listen to accomplished film artist Sarah Filmer. Using Art to Dance as an example, Sarah will discuss how choreography has been approached using visual art as a starting point. Sarah s films, commissioned for Art to Dance, will be on show for the duration of the exhibition and her talk is included amongst many other fascinating events in Southampton Film Week s programme. Art to Dance Drawn to life Sat 12 Jan 2013 / 1 3pm Art Gallery / 10 This clothed life drawing session, with dancers as models explores the dynamics of movement within drawing in a series of controlled exercises. This workshop, led by artist Melanie Rose, will explore gestural drawing in response to both sound and movement. Gary, whose exhibition Now and Again is currently running in the gallery, will be giving a special live performance of his acclaimed solo Not Tony. Following the 30 minute performance, the audience are invited to have a glass of wine and enjoy his exhibition, before an illustrated talk by the artist.
