I found a little piece of pipe that I thought looked like a fish. So I took it and turned it into a 3D metal fish, he said. And that was the start of his three dimensional metal art creations. He had been doing two dimensional metal pieces for 20 years but didn t come up with his first 3D piece until Smith, a native Oregonian who lives in Oregon City, was the June featured artist for the First Friday Art Walk along Oregon City s Main Street. The event runs from 5 8pm and is a showcase for local artists sponsored by the Three Rivers Artist Guild and Main Street Oregon City. By 1990, Smith took his art on the road and began selling his unique pieces of art at shows and in galleries. In 1994, he signed on to sell his creations at Portland s Saturday Market. He calls his art free-form metal sculptures, which means he has no particular form or pattern that he follows, unless he is doing a sculpture based on a previous piece he has already done. I began with two-dimensional and then began to fool around with free-form, he said. After a break from taking his art on the road, Smith is heading out again. He has work in local galleries but will once again be going to shows and also display his sculptures at Saturday Market. Lance has offered to open his studio for the evening to the Guild. Come to this month s general meeting to see how he works, and this will be a wonderful opportunity to socialize with fellow Guild members. 2 . Historic Downtown, Clackamas County Arts Alliance Needs Your Help! Action is neeeded now to help hold the Arts Alliance budget intact as the County concludes budget process for the fiscal year beginning next month. Our skeletal operations budget is at risk for cuts that would damage our capacity to provide services like those you are familiar with. Please send a brief in support of the Arts Alliance no later than Monday June 14 to each of our County commissioners: ALininger@co.clackamas.or.us BAustin@co.clackamas. or.us CLehan@co.clackamas.or.us JBernard@ co.clackamas.or.us lynnpet@co.clackamas.or.us Nothing elaborate or fancy required, just a few heartfelt sentences clearly explaining positive impact you received from your interaction with the Arts Alliance. We know that one fundamental human need is the solace provided through arts and culture especially in difficult times. Beyond that, the work you do results in downtown revitalization, provides content for cultural tourism, and is intrinsic to education at all levels. The work the Arts Alliance does supports you. Most of our elected officials understand this, but hearing that message from those who benefit (and are voting citizens!) is essential. Please take a few minutes right now and send a message to County decision-makers in support of Arts Alliance work in Clackamas County! 5 Three Rivers Art Gallery June Featured Artist Melanie Monge, Masks of Awareness Art is an expression of Self my innermost guidance coming through in my work. On her journey through life Melanie has embraced the mask as a tool for healing and empowerment. She is intrigued with the fact that masks have been discovered in most every culture throughout the world. Masks have been used for healing, ceremony, celebration, decoration, empowerment, spirituality, entertainment and anonymity she explores their mystery and the draw they ve had on civilizations for thousands of years. Her mask-making journey began 18 years ago in Southwestern Colorado while doing personal exploration. She became drawn to Native American art and spirituality. This continued after moving to Sedona, Arizona several years later when she was further influenced by sculpture study, indigenous art and healing. As her journey continues the masks transform. Being a seeker of the mysteries of life each mask brings her closer to understanding and the desire to learn more. Melanie states, I strive to foster growth in spirit by empowering you as you journey through self-transformation. Inhibitions are released, acceptance is offered and creativity is enhanced while taking on the power of self-expression. This further assists in releasing self-judgment and promoting forward movement in the direction of your heart s desire. Authenticity is revealed when envisioning and manifesting your dreams, making it no longer necessary to wear everyday metaphorical masks. Melanie is an artist, writer and horse assisted coach offering the space and experience for people to explore their heart s desire. She believes mask making is an integral part of exploring who we are authentically, and how we represent ourselves to the world (what masks we wear). Building self-awareness through experiential learning fosters personal growth and confidence, enabling one to access their personal power and authentic self. Her masks represent personal power, strength and the shedding of false self. They offer the courage to be who we truly are without hiding behind our self-imposed masks. Her work has been displayed in galleries throughout Colorado, Arizona and Oregon. You can see a collection of Melanie s mask at the TRAG Gallery through July 1, Greetings from the TRAG Gallery Committee! The TRAG Gallery has been open for six months and is fast becoming an integral part of the regional community. Everyday people are discovering this artistic outlet and telling their friends about it. What a wonderful opportunity for the artists of Three Rivers Artist Guild to promote their work to the public! Sales at the Gallery have far exceeded expectations, and exhibiting members will tell you that the minimal expense and time spent for the opportunity to show here has been well worth it. With summer approaching and the weather improving, we anticipate increased visitation to the Gallery. Summer will be a great time for you to showcase and sell your art. We encourage you to sign up for the next three-month rotation, which begins July 1. Exhibit space is limited, and now is the time to contact Lynda Orzen at orzep@comcast.net to participate. Exhibit requirements are simple: 1. Be a current member of TRAG. 2. Pay a one time nominal fee of $25 for the three months you will be showing. 3. Staff the Gallery for 8 hours each month your work is displayed. (This equates to one full day or two half-days each month. Gallery hours are 11am 6pm (12pm 5pm on Sunday), seven days a week. The $25 exhibit fee covers insurance, advertising and supplies for the Gallery. Compared with other venues, these fees are minimal for the opportunity to participate in this beautiful Gallery. A 25% commission is taken from all sales, and is used in its entirety to pay for the Gallery space. All TRAG members are eligible to showcase their art in the Gallery. If you have never exhibited your work, here s your chance. Every artist has to start somewhere! This is a quiet, comfortable space where you can meet your fellow artists, demonstrate your own art, and engage an admiring public! Or, if you feel a bit tentative, consider working a shift or two. You do not have to be a current exhibitor to greet the public and show off your art. The TRAG Gallery at 7 TH and Center Streets in Oregon City is the Guild s only full time, professional Gallery, staffed and operated entirely by volunteer TRAG members. We invite and encourage your participation! Your TRAG Gallery Committee Lynda Orzen, Ingrid Aubry, Debbie Ellis, Janice Gunderson, Mary McCarty page 5
6 TRAG Time TRAG is now on cable television! Local cable, that is, but still we have a short program on Willamette Falls Cable Access, public channel 18/23 East and 23 West. Tara Choate, a new artist to the Guild is also a volunteer at the station. She offered the idea of creating a short 7 minute piece that would highlight our Artist of the Month. For June, Melanie Monge is our featured artist. We all met at the gallery after hours, Tara shot about an hour s worth of video, and turned it into a 7 minute program. Tara did a very professional job with the video. It is patterned after Oregon Art Beat, complete with video effects and music. I love the rag-time opening music TRAG Time/Rag Time. We are hoping to get the video posted on the TRAG website so all can view our featured Artists of the Month. Many thanks to Tara for getting us on Cable! Presenter Mike Wonser opened the Critique with an art history lesson: Aretè, artistic definition: intellectual use of physical strength (soul). Some call it the creative sense, must be within one s heart. It is beauty, is perfection. Evolution when it transcends itself taking that extra step; not holding back, such as Olympic athelete Bode Miller. He challenged all of us to approach our art with Aretè in mind! Then critiques were presented on watercolors, acrylics, wood turnings, metal castings. TH June 14 meeting will be hosted by Lance Smith s Studio. Check roster for address. Meeting 9:00pm. page 7
