B S A T u r n s F or 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America's youth. The BSA has helped build the future leaders of America by combining educational activities and lifelong values with the inspiration required to ignite action. It has remained the nation s leading youth organization through its dedication to the core values of Scouting service to others, personal achievement, and respecting and embracing the outdoors while continuously adapting to new technologies and communication platforms to help deliver its programs in relevant and meaningful ways. About the Boy Scouts of America The Boy Scouts of America is the nation s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The Scouting organization is composed of 2.7 million youth members between the ages of 7 and 20, 1.1 million volunteers, and nearly 300 local councils throughout the United States and its territories. The 100th Anniversary National Jamboree will be held at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia from July 26 through August 4, This 76,000 acre site has hosted jamborees since Sir Robert Baden Powell (founder of the Scouting movement) envisioned that the jamboree would grow with the years because of the indeterminate force we only know as the Scout spirit.

Many of the decisions they make from now on will be up to them. What they decide, what they pursue becomes the destiny of our country. That sounds a bit dramatic, but it is accurate as future educators, business leaders and world leaders come from that pool of graduates every spring. We are proud that the Koshare youth development program is one of the influences for these future leaders. We believe that today s Arkansas Valley graduates, like the Koshares before them, have been well prepared to meet the challenges of higher education and business careers because of the training and support they received from their parents, their communities and the Koshares. In our facility, they were able to test their leadership skills and build strength of character over nearly a decade. The Koshare organization is a leadership training ground for all the young people who go through our doors. Most have realized successful futures as they realized their dreams. Education is to replace an empty mind with an open mind, said Malcolm Forbes. The more experiences a young person has during his/her development years, the more they are open to new ideas and are better able to assimilate into multi-cultural experiences. Someday the graduates of 2010 may look back on their high school years as the best of their lives. We hope that they do not because we hope every year brings them a new adventure, better success and much happiness. Our hope is that they take the training they received in the Koshare program and improve upon it daily. Truth, character, integrity, discipline and drive were learned here. It is now their job to use these attributes to build the life of their dreams. We know they are prepared to face any challenge that comes their way. We pray they enjoy the journey.
3 Fund Raising Campaigns El Pomar Matching Grant El Pomar Foundation of Colorado Springs gifted $25,000 to the Koshares for general operating expenses to assist us through these difficult economic times. We were able to match that grant through donations and fund raisers. We had hoped to double the grant and are still keeping our fingers crossed. To date, we have raised about $27,000 Thanks to all who have helped us meet our initial goal. Boy Scout Jamboree Trip For 30 or more Koshare Dancers and leaders to make the trip East and perform at the Boy Scouts of America 100th Anniversary celebration, the Koshares will need about $18,000. To date, we have raised $5,800. Thanks to all who have helped us meet our initial goal. We will continue fund raising until the last possible minute that the dancers leave on July 26. You may contribute directly by sending a check to the Koshare Dancer Trip Colorado Bank & Trust, 301 Colorado Avenue, La Junta, Colorado K O S H A R E N E W S

Koshare Assistant Head Chief, Dion Armendariz was recognized for organizing a local youth car club. Assistant Program Director, James McKnight, toured with his rock band in Southern California last summer. Ko s h a r e s A t t e n d i n g T he Koshare Dancers have a long history with Scouting. It was the foundation from which they grew. Their history with Boy Scouts of America is also long and strong. The Koshares attended the first Jamboree and performed at the 50th Anniversary celebration in 1960 in Colorado Springs. The Koshares are thrilled to continue their legacy by dancing, once again, during a BSA milestone. Being able to perform at BSA s 100th Anniversary this summer and dancing on the day of Buck s 101st birthday is a great honor for the current Koshare Dancers. The Koshare Scouting leadership track is a large component of the Koshare youth development program. Dancers must be Eagle Scouts to advance to leadership positions in the Koshare program. Scouting provides principles and a strong foundation that builds wellrounded individuals, explained Program Director, Jeremy Manyik. Assistant Koshare Program Director and Scout master, James McKnight, said that scouting means so much more to him as an adult than it did when he was young. When you are young, reciting the Scout Law is just something you do from memory. As a leader you recognize that the principles of the Law helps you to grow. He went on to say that young people who have gone through the Scout leadership track have a strong back bone and are more goal-oriented individuals. They know that things in life do not happen unless you make it happen. What they learn in Scouts gives them good tools to help them make things happen. McKnight talked further about the importance of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Such principles helped bring order to young lives. Most importantly, finding the right leaders to connect with kids is still the key. You have to be able to connect with each individual kid what they need, what they are feeling, what is in their head, explained McKnight. Great men and women are made through Scouts. McKnight went on to say that his favorite Scout saying is still: Do a good turn daily. He explained that if you follow that rule, you embody what a good Scout stands for and how a good leader lives. Visiting Scouts (circa 1950) go through the Koshare Museum prior to sitting down for a show and staying overnight on the Kiva floor. The Koshares continue to host thousands of visiting Scouts every year. To receive regular updates, please send us your address.

6 S U M M E R P A G E 6 Artists at the Museum T his year, the Museum has been blessed with many great visiting artists. We started the year by displaying the work of Bill Miller (Grammy-award winning Native American recording artist and renowned painter). He spent three days at the Museum, holding trainings about his art and the Native American spirit. Miller felt a strong connection with the Museum and vowed to return. Miller s Warrior on a Red Horse. This special edition commemorative poster is on sale in the Koshare Trading Post. February: Melanie Hudspeth Myron formerly from La Junta and current Casper, Wyoming resident. Melanie works in stained glass, stone and metal. March: We displayed private collections from the Oliver Steele, Judge Phelps, Hendren and Baker families. All these families had been instrumental over the years in their support and contributions to the Koshare dancers and Koshare museum. April: Dan Ballard, La Junta photographer, was a hit with patrons. He provided photography technique training. Our May artist was Dennis Vider from Pueblo, Colorado. He specializes in taking old farm equipment and making fabulous metal sculptures. June brings us Justin I. Young from Lamar. Justin is a painter and sculptor. His son, John Young from Boulder is also a painter. Both will display during June. Victor Erickson (ink drawings on rawhide) and Delbert Jones (jewelry) are our July artists. Pueblo painter, Lyle Clift rounds out the summer as our August artist. A picture is a poem without words. Horace Mark your calendars: December artist features the jewelry of Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Dan Ballard Ladies Who Lunch Until the Koshare girl s program established more comprehensive advancement procedures, the girls helped with a fund raising project: Ladies Who Lunch. In addition to raising funds for the summer trip, this event taught the girls about project management, poise, and women in business. The event is an opportunity for young girls to pair with mentors and be inspired by established, accomplished women. Of course, the fashion show and luncheon as well as vendor booths and prizes are great fun as well. This year s event takes place on Saturday, June 19, 10:00 AM in the Kiva. Call for reservations:
7 Photo by Jeremy Manyik P A G E 7 Bent s Old Fort Turns 50 Courtesy Photo Bent s Old Fort National Historic Site became part of the National Park System on June 3, This year marks its 50th year. The Koshares danced at the original dedication of the Fort and are proud to once again be involved with commemorating this historic Fort. Sitting on the North bank of the Arkansas River, the current National Park site is seven miles outside of La Junta on the original 1833 site. Drawings left by an army engineer (recuperating at the Fort in the 1800s) provided the information necessary to help rebuild the Fort more than a century later. Often called the Castle on the Plains, Bent s Old Fort is the largest historic site and major tourist attraction in the Arkansas Valley.
