2 Where Does It Hurt? Pain Management in People with Dementia By Ava M. Stinnett Memory Corner As you know, the term dementia describes a group of symptoms that affects memory and thinking and social ability severely enough to interfere with daily functioning. Alzheimer s Disease is the most common cause of progressive dementia in older adults, but there are several other causes, including Parkinson s Disease and Vascular Dementia. As the disease advances, it may become difficult for your loved one to articulate what is causing them pain, making it easy for their complaints to be overlooked by doctors or caregivers. Over the years, there has been a lack of clarity about whether people with dementia feel as much pain as those without a cognitive disorder. Researchers have been learning about the pain levels of those who cannot speak for themselves. A Slovenian study conducted by Dr. Martin Rakusa (2016) compared pain levels of those who could communicate with those who could not. He concluded that Cognitively impaired individuals or individuals with dementia evidently articulate their complaints less frequently. We therefore have to do more than just ask them about possible pain; we have to actively examine them to determine whether they are experiencing pain. When pain cannot be communicated verbally, it becomes critical for caregivers to watch body language in order to provide adequate care. First, look at your loved one s breathing. Is it normal? Is there occasional and/or labored breathing? Next, be aware of occasional moans or groans, crying, or repeated calling out. What does the facial expression tell you? Facial grimacing, frowning, or displaying a sad or frightened look can indicate the need for pain relief. Additionally, appearing tense or distressed with clenched fists, pulling away from touch, or pacing/fidgeting often indicates the need for some type of intervention. A physician or caregiver should monitor changes over time in response to treatment to determine changes in pain. Because of their declining brain function, people with dementia are less able to communicate what hurts. Lab tests and a physical exam can help a physician determine the cause of pain. However, be persistent in encouraging the physician or caregiver to observe behavioral changes such as restlessness, agitation, vocalizations, and even a faster heart rate. 7 2 MAY The world s favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May. ~ Edwin Way Teale Birthstone Emerald The emerald is the birthstone for May. This stone s name was derived from the Greek word smaragdos, which is a general term that was applied to several kinds of green stones. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that the stone held the power to foretell the future. It was also believed to cure epilepsy and fever and to protect the wearer from panic. Furthermore, Aristotle thought emeralds soothed eyesight. Emeralds frequently occur inside shale, a fine-grained sedimentary rock. They have been found in Brazil, Pakistan, Norway, Austria, Zambia, India, and Australia. Some are even found in North Carolina. However, Colombia is known to mine the largest and highestquality emeralds, and is the home of the most famous emerald mine. This mine is named Muzo, after the Muzo Indians, who were the original discoverers of the mine. It probably references a quote from the biblical Song of Solomon: I am the rose of Sharon and the lily of the valley. The flower s Latin name, Convallaria majalis, means valley (Convallaria) and the month of May (majalis), which probably refers to where it thrives and when it blooms. These delicate, white, bell-shaped perennials are very fragrant. They signify purity and innocence, and also are said to bring luck in love. For these reasons, they are often the choice for bridal bouquets. When you give these pretty little lilies as a gift, you are saying, I am humbled by my love for you or You ve made my life complete. Either way, it s a lucky lady who receives a bouquet of lily of the valley from her sweetheart.

8 Barbara Whited Barbara Whited is a South California native, born and raised in San Diego California. She was an only child. During her childhood days, Barbara loves to dance and perform in front of lots of people. Her mother was responsible for all the costumes that she wore. Not only does she perform at school plays but she also ran the school newspaper. She graduated from Hoover High School. After that, she attended San Diego State where she met Nord Whited. Barbara and Nord were both Theater Arts majors. Barbara continued to perform on stage at UCLA. And in 1963, they moved to Lake Tahoe. Barbara and Nord had 2 daughters Laurel and Carol. On their retirement, Nord and Barbara moved to Placerville California and spent their time exploring the historical gold country. Lets all give a warm welcome to Barbara Whited. Prior to moving here in California, I lived in Chicago for about 4 years. I like collecting succulents plant and also I am pen and make up enthusiast.

16 43 million Americans have arthritis and it can limit the ability to perform many activities, especially in seniors. The good news is exercise can help decrease joint pain, improve function and delay disability as a result of arthritis. Participating in programs like Live 2 Be Healthy can help manage and even decrease your risk of arthritis. Live 2 Be Healthy represents the definition of active aging, challenging the stereotypes associated with elder capabilities, and are enhancing the lives of seniors, families and communities through our adaptive programs. A person has an increased risk of arthritis based on the following factors: Age: Your risk increases as you age. Arthritis & Exercise Gender: Women are more likely to develop arthritis than men. Genetics: Having a close relative with rheumatoid arthritis increases the risk of developing the condition. Joint Damage: Joints that have been damaged through infection, injury or repetitive motion can develop arthritis. Obesity: More body weight can equal more joint pain and decreased joint function. If you have arthritis, the CDC recommends the following strategies to help you manage it to improve or maintain your quality of life: Be Active: Getting at least 30 minutes per day of exercise can decrease pain, improve function and delay disability. Watch Your Weight: Reducing weight may help to reduce pain and slow the progression of the disease. See Your Doctor: There are many different types of arthritis and your doctor can help you manage the type of arthritis you have. Protect Your Joints: Joint injury can lead to osteoarthritis.
