7 INTELIMER 8600 Emulsion Polymer Description Intelimer 8600 emulsion polymer is an easy to use, low viscosity, high solids emulsion. It is thermally responsive and heat activated. Intelimer 8600 emulsion polymer exhibits flexible, water-resistant films above 40 C that become reversibly rigid and impermeable below 35 C. Applications Intelimer 8600 emulsion polymer has a variety of applications. Its effective controlled release of actives makes it valuable for various applications, like sun care. It is stable in low ph levels, making it useful in acne and anti-aging formulations. In hair care, it is designed for easy re-styling without shampoo and re-set using only a personal hair dryer. It improves curl retention, volume, humidity resistance and hold. Typical Properties (not to be used as specifications) Appearance Total Solids ph Melt Temperature Density (lbs/gal) 25 C (cps) Milky White Liquid % C Chemistry Advantages Intelimer 8600 polymer is a patented, side chain crystalline homopolymer with a long chain acrylate group in the back bone. 8 Quick Start Guide Formulating Guidance Intelimer 8600 polymer is an easy to use polymer that can be added at any point in the formulation. Also, the polymer can be used across a wide range of temperature. Recommended use level as a styling polymer is 0.5 to 3%. Order of Addition No specific order of addition is required since Intelimer 8600 polymer can be incorporated at any point in the formulation. Remember Temperature is not a factor in working with the Intelimer 8600 emulsion polymer. Therefore, cold processing formulations can be prepared using the polymer. Intelimer 8600 polymer is in the form of white dispersion at ~50% solids. No neutralizer is required for Intelimer 8600 polymer. Intelimer 8600 polymer provides style-restyle properties (with the use of curling rod, flat iron, etc.) without requiring reapplication of the finished formulation. Intelimer 8600 polymer does not form clear gels. In working with ethanol or other alcohol systems, Intelimer 8600 needs to be dispersed in water before adding alcohol or alcohol/water mixture. Direct addition of Intelimer 8600 to ethanol or ethanol/water mixture will cause coagulation of the polymer. Storage / Shipping The product should be protected from freezing and should be sealed tightly in its container. Should air penetrate the container, product may form a dry film or dry polymer chuncks along the exposed surface. Please filter out this dry material using a cheese cloth. Product sold in 210 kgs containers. Larger quantities packaged to meet customer handling requirements. Handling Precautions Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for Intelimer 8600 emulsion polymer. 11 INTELIMER IPA 13-1 Polymer Description Intelimer IPA 13-1 polymer is an associative oil phase thickener designed to thicken a wide variety of oil phase materials including mineral oil, hydrogenated polyisobutylene (HPIB), vegetable oils, oil esters, triglycerides, etc. It is particularly effective in nonpolar oils. Intelimer IPA 13-1 polymer has a built-in temperature switch (48 C) to allow change in properties at the trigger temperature. Applications Intelimer IPA 13-1 polymer is intended for cosmetic and personal care products across selected skin care, hair care and color cosmetics, applications and within several media including lotions, creams, and sticks. Ideal for: Modifying formulation texture, touch and feel Suspending small particles (e.g., pigments, beads, fillers) Modifying formulation hydrophobicity and viscosity Advantages Sensory modified texture, touch and feel Versatility thickener with added temperature switch Processability ease of mixing and use at convenient process temperatures Typical Properties (not to be used as specifications) Appearance White to Light Yellow Pellets Total Solids 100 % 93 C (cps) 650 Melt Temperature 48 C Chemistry Intelimer IPA 13-1 polymer is a patented, side chain crystalline homopolymer with a long chain acrylate group in the back bone. It has a very sharp melt point with small hysterisis. The polymer s temperature switch characteristics allow it to exhibit sharp changes in properties such as permeability, adhesion and viscosity over temperature ranges as narrow as 1 to 2 C. INCI Name Poly C10-30 alkyl acrylate Intelimer Temperature Switch Technology Intelimer technology allows for the design of a tailored trigger temperature (Tm) within a 0-70 C (± 1 C ) range which allows for: Triggered viscosity and flow control Triggered permeation, fragrance release and moisture permeation control Triggered ease of removal or wash-off Triggered waterproofing and gloss control Viscosity (cps at 25C) Figure 1. 12 Quick Start Guide Formulating Guidance Intelimer IPA 13-1 polymer is added into the oil phase; it is soluble in the oil phase at 5 C above its melt temperature. The polymer has the ability to modify the rheology of emulsions. Recommended use level: 1-3% for emulsions, 3-15% for anhydrous formulations. Order of Addition In order to ensure maximum benefit and efficiency from the polymer, we recommend that you follow this order of addition: For w/o and w/si emulsion: 1. Combine Intelimer 13-1 and all other oil phase ingredients and melt while mixing. 2. Combine water phase ingredients in a separate vessel and heat to desired temperature. 3. Add water phase into oil phase while stirring and homogenize for 3 to 6 minutes. 4. Package at desired temperature. For o/w emulsion: 1. Combine Intelimer 13-1 and all other oil phase ingredients and melt while mixing. 2. Combine water phase ingredients in a separate vessel and heat to desired temperature. 3. Add oil phase into water phase while stirring and homogenize 3-6 minutes. 4. Package at desired temperature. For Anhydrous formulation: 1. Add all the ingredients, including the polymer, while mixing and heat to 55 C or to the desired melt temperature for all of the ingredients. 2. Continue to mix until all the ingredients are dissolved. 3. Cool to desired temperature and package. Remember Increasing the temperature above the polymer s melt point does not adversely affect polymer properties. No neutralizer is required when using Intelimer 13-1 polymer. For w/o and w/si emulsion, add a small amount of electrolyte (NaCl or MgSo4) into the water phase in order to enhance stability of the emulsion. For o/w emulsion a small amount of water-phase thickener is required to ensure elevated temperature stability. No water-phase thickener is required for w/o and w/si formulations. The final formulation needs to rest overnight to achieve stable viscosity. A small amount of plasticizer will enhance the flexibility of polymer film if desired. Storage / Shipping Store below 40 C to prevent melting or softening. Product sold as pellets melting about 48 C in five gallon pails containing 11kgs. Larger quantities packaged to meet customer handling requirements. Handling Precautions Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for Intelimer IPA 13-1 polymer. 45 Low ph Systems

46 Low ph Systems: Acne, Antiaging Beauty through Persistance Consumers are impatient for results, but we know most beauty actives work only with persistent exposure. Intelimer technology s controlled release of actives can help by extending the retention of actives on skin over longer time periods. Low ph systems encompass several fast-growing segments, notably antiaging and acne. Both are growing well above global GDP, with acne expected to grow over 4.5% per year and antiaging reaching double digits. Are your products positioned to capitalize on this growth? Consider Intelimer temperature trigger technology. Our Intelimer 8600 polymer improves controlled release of actives such as salicylic and glycolic acids, which can make products effective for longer periods of time and hence lead to more visible results. Intelimer 8600 polymer also enables a more environmentally friendly solution that utilizes the lower overall concentration of active chemicals. Enhanced water resistance and sensory benefits further make it a smart choice for formulators. For beauty that is skin deep check it out for yourself.
