Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ 85636, Periodical Postage Paid at Hereford POSTMASTER: Send address changes to ArtyFacts, P. O. Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ April Members Show Gary Shreve Featured Artist for the month of April Open Reception April 6 th, 3:00-5:00 P.M. - at the Sierra Vista Mall Gallery - Featured Artist Gary was born and raised in Sheridan, WY. At an early age he was interested in drawing and painting as both of his parents were artistically talented. He took art classes through grade school and Jr. High. High School he enrolled in art classes from his freshman to his senior year. With the coaxing of his art teacher, Mrs. Marie Avery, he had a one man show in downtown Sheridan, his junior/ senior year of high school. Upon graduating high school, he joined the U. S. Navy, becoming a Hospital Corpsman, and was assigned to the U. S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, CA, ending up in South Vietnam in 1965 with the Marine Corps. He hired on with a company called Western Electric in the S.F.Bay Area and then moved to Southern CA. His wife encouraged him to return to art school at Mira Costa College in Oceanside and Del Mar CA The instructors praise and critique s, inspired his continued art instructions. His first pastel was entered into an art competition, winning 1st Place in Oceanside, CA. After retirement from the phone company in San Diego, CA, he and his wife decided to move away from the Pacific Coast to Arizona. Upon driving into the San Pedro Valley, he stated that it felt like his hometown of Sheridan, WY only with the Huachuca Mountains instead of the Rockies and Big Horn Mountains. He fell in love with the valley and the mountains. Joining the Huachuca Art Association, he participated in classes from Carol Riley (watercolors) and Edie Manion (pastels). He loves pastels, but is not closing the door on oil, acrylics, watercolors or collages. Whatever inspires him, he will pursue. 1

For anyone who may not have already heard, we are presently undergoing a change in management at the Mall Gallery. Both Elizabeth Line and Pat Anderson, who were the last of the original team of curators, are stepping down after nearly two and a half years of putting in extraordinary efforts and countless hours to make the Gallery a success. The whole gallery venture began as Elizabeth's brainchild, and it probably would not have happened at all, nor would it have survived this long, without her dedication and that of the team of curators that she put together. It has required a high level of sustained enthusiasm, imagination, cooperation, responsibility and hard work from all of them, and we can not thank them enough for all that they have done. Having the gallery in the Mall has not only raised the HAA's profile in the community, it has also provided our artists with valuable experience in showing their work, and a level of exposure that was not possible for us before, not to mention the sales. Now we are putting together a new team with Richard Etheridge as the Gallery Administrator. We are trying to structure the management so that more people will be involved, and so that no one person will have to give up having a life in order to make a contribution. We have assembled a team of volunteers to open the Gallery in the morning, and Richard will be looking for still more people as back-ups for them in the event of vacations, personal obligations, illness, or whatever. We are getting volunteers for other jobs as well, but there still are more jobs to be filled. We hope to have enough volunteers so that nobody is overburdened, and we don't have to resort to nagging, or run the risk of sounding like my dear old mom, in one of her less cheerful, more putupon moods... "Well, who do you suppose does all the work around here, TINKERBELLE???" Ah, yes, Tinkerbelle! I was always hoping you'd show up. If you are out there, could you please come by and hang some pictures for us? Just put on some decent clothing, and don't get that *#!%*!! pixie dust all over our glass cases. Well, so much for Fantasyland. We do have some real work to do, and I want to thank all the people who have stepped up so far to offer their services. We'll soon have the Mall management all up and running again. However we artists can get in earlier--like 9:00 AM. Stop at the end of the road (on Ramsey Canyon Road) and the "gate keepers" will let you drive all the way in to the parking area outside the fence, so you can unload your art supplies for Pleine Air painting!! Edie Manion On Friday (25th) we will accept the Art Work for display in the "House" from 10 to 12:00 noon. The space is limited so we will jury the work to only Brown Canyon Ranch paintings. Bring pieces nicely clear wrapped and framed pieces wired for hanging. (You know the routine!!) AAAH! we are back to normal again! The next Dine with the Artists is May 10th--save the date!! Member Demonstration Trilby Arnold, Scratch Board Saturday, April 19 th, 10:00 a.m. at the Astro Street Studio Paper Arts Gabrielle LaFargue, Paper Piercing Monday, April 21 st, 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Astro Street Studio Here are some pictures to remind you about the Brown Canyon Open House and the fun we have had painting. It s also a great time for photographers to get some cool shots. See you there! Photos courtesy Sue Olivo. Trilby will introduce us to the wonderful medium of scratch board. Scratch board lends itself to a multitude of subject matter. The audience will be given an opportunity to experiment with this technique so bring a blank scratch board and an exacto knife if you have them. Hope to see you there. Gabrielle will present Paper Piercing, a technique of piercing a design in paper with a push pin. There are very few supplies needed for this interesting technique. If you are interested in participating in this session please let Gabrielle know at gjlafargue@gmail.com and she will send you a list of supplies. 4

5 From the Galleries From the Mall Gallery Richard Etheridge As of the first of April, I will be the new Administrator in the Gallery in the Mall. Right now, I am busy assessing our needs, and soon will be putting together a team of people who I think will work well together to do all that has to be done. I want to make this transition as seamless as possible, and I'm counting on all of the docents to help make that happen. I also may be asking some of you to take on tasks that used to be the responsibilities of the curators, so that in the future, the curators' job will be focused mostly on working with the artists, the jurying of new artists, and maintaining the look of the gallery. Once I get my team assembled, we also will be reviewing policies and procedures in order to streamline things as much as possible. If you would like to help, or if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Mall Gallery, please direct them to me at: bravov40@yahoo.com, or call me at A Special Thank You To Elizabeth Line, and to all of the other curators who have served at the Mall Gallery, from 2011 through the present: For your vision, your persistence, your sacrifices and all hard work that you have done to make the Mall Gallery a success, we will always thank you. It would not have happened without you. Richard Etheridge, Liz Horning, and the HAA Board of Directors Please note we have a new volunteer generating title cards. TITLE CARDS FOR THE MALL GALLERY Next change out date is scheduled for Wednesday, April 30 th. Deliver new work from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please send titles to Laureen McArdle by fifthwindwoman@msn.com on or before Monday, April 28. If you sell and need a new card for your replacement during the month, contact Laureen. March Paper Arts On St. Patrick's Day our Paper Arts group met to experiment with paper embossing with the various tools and paper. We worked with vellum, card stock, stamps, colored pencils and facial tissue among other tools and medium to make our creations. Photos courtesy Gabrielle LaFargue March Member Demonstration Collage with Barbara Sisneros Barbara had a collection of "stuff" for all of us to play with. Color, texture, layout - all were incorporated to create totally different pieces among all the participants. 5

7 Call to Artists Call to Artists West End Fair The HAA has been invited to participate as vendors in this year's West End Fair to be held on May 3, on Fry Blvd., in downtown Sierra Vista. The West End commission has offered to reserve the entire Landmark Plaza space for the HAA at a price that could make it possible for our artists to participate at a much reduced rate. It is a one day event, beginning at 10 am, ending at 5pm. Vendors will need to have a tax license and provide their own tables and display setups. The Plaza is more protected than the street, so a tent may not be absolutely necessary, but would still be strongly recommended. The Plaza spaces will not be limited in size, so if you need to spread out you can do it. If you would like sign up for a space in the Plaza, please lhorningfa@q.com, or phone me at , no later than April 15. I will put you on the list and notify you as soon as I know it's a "go". If we get at least 8 vendors, the cost for the space will be $20. If we do not get enough vendors to make the Plaza offer cost effective, members can still sign up with the City and get a 10 x 10 space in the street for $40. You can get a lot more information by going to the City website at: From the Home Page, click on GOVERNMENT> Community Development> West End Commission> West End Fair> Event website> Vendor application. The deadline for those applications is April 30. Call to Artists San Pedro Festival of the Arts The Friends of the San Pedro are planning a Festival to be held at San Pedro House on May 17, and part of that event will be an Art Competition and Sale. The first prize in the competition will be $200. Each artist may submit three pieces for jurying in. Due to the limited display space, no piece is to exceed 900 sq. inches. Drawings and paintings only will be considered. The subject matter must be San Pedro specific- such as landscapes of the Conservation Area, flora and fauna indigenous to the area, and/or the river itself. Digital submissions are to be sent to Lhorningfa@q.com no later than May 3. Please include your name, phone # and the titles and framed sizes of the works. The art will need to be framed, wired, and ready to be hung. They will be judged, displayed, and available for sale at San Pedro House on May 17. Ten % of the sale's proceeds will go to the BLM. There will also be a photo competition, but that will not be a part of this exhibit.. Photographers will be encouraged to come to the Event, take pictures, and submit them digitally. More info on that yet to come. Advertising In the ArtyFacts Newsletter HAA members who wish to advertise their art or their art classes that are NOT held at the HAA Gallery must pay for their ads. Advertising space in the ArtyFacts newsletter will be available to members for a fee of $20 for one 3 x 5 insertion which entitles them to print copy as well as copy on our website ( OR they may pay for one year in advance for a fee of $100 which would give them one changeable ad per month for 12 months. There is no discount for being a member, and none for ads less than the full year. ArtyFacts is perfectly targeted for an artist and art instructor s audience over 250 artists, plus art groups read the newsletter! 7

8 Call to Artists Call to Artists Art Class or Presentation for Children Here is a letter I received from Sister Ines Sandoval, who teaches at the Loretto School in Douglas, who wants to know if there any of us in the HAA who would be willing to go and give a class or presentation to the children there. The children's grade levels range from 1-8, but I'm guessing no one would be covering all of them in one day. For more information, you can call Sister Ines, at: , or her at: srinesocd@live.com. Liz Horning Dear Ms. Horning, Blessings! It was a joy to speak with you this past Saturday regarding the possibility of some one from the Huachuca Art Association coming to Loretto School in Douglas, AZ to teach an art class and/or give an art presentation for our students. As I mentioned, we have a number of students who show great promise in the arts, however, there are very limited resources available to them by which to enrich their talents and refine their skills. I am familiar with programs in other states in which artists/art teachers go to schools on a monthly basis and teach a lesson using a specific techinique. The same lesson is taught to various classes throughout the day. The art lesson usually lasts about 1 to 1 1/2 hours per class session. On the following month the same or another artist teaches another technique, and so on. The children love it, and typically complete a personal "masterpiece" by the end of the day. In programs which I have observed, the presentor usually bring samples of art work completed using the specific art technique/concept being taught. They also share a little about the artist who developed it and and significant works created using the techinique/concept. I am very interested in speaking with someone who might be interested in doing something like this at Loretto School. We can be flexible with date and time and well as with the format of the presentation, working it out with the individual artists. I would be grateful if you could pass this request on to the members of the Huachuca Art Association via your newsletter. Thank you for your kind attention and consideration of our request. Sincerely, Sister Ines March s featured artist Laurie Giangregorio at her reception. Debi Hadley the HAA Reception Chair. Photos courtesy Angel Rutherford. 8
