1 ArtyFacts December 2013 Newsletter of the Huachuca Art Association, Inc Astro Street, Hereford, AZ, , Volume 44, Issue 12 ArtyFacts, (USPS LRR), monthly, P. O. Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ 85636, Periodical Postage Paid at Hereford POSTMASTER: Send address changes to ArtyFacts, P. O. Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ December Members Show Joyce Geerlings-Griffith Featured Artist for the month of December Open Reception December 1 st, 3:00-5:00 P.M. - at the Sierra Vista Mall Gallery - Featured Artist Art was my secret garden until I moved to Sierra Vista in 2001, and joined the Huachuca Art Association! This native Iowan fell in love with the desert and mountains and the Paris of the southwest. The new Mall Gallery encourages us to paint more. HAA artists expand my art skills and social life. I loved drawing as a child, and when living in Atlanta, I realized historical buildings are my forte. Nearby Bisbee and Tombstone provide endless architectural subjects. My latest acrylic paintings are landscapes. Colored pencil is still a favorite but takes more time. My parents and my late husband Bill always encouraged my art. College years included a B.A. rom the University of Iowa plus Ringling School of Art in Sarasota and the Chicago Art Institute. Those Art History courses from U. of I. are now very helpful in teaching art to children. A career in Advertising an PR for thirty years required writing, which I am still studying with a local group. Our communication skills promote interest, cement friendships and increase sales in art. My paintings are done from personal photographs. Photography is my hobby, and a day trip capturing local scenes on film is a mini vacation for me. Carefully chosen are shows such as Art in the Park Member Booth exposure and sales. There s extra effort involved but shows can bring rewards. Creative people know the high cost in time and money to make an art career successful, but we wouldn t choose another way of life! 1

Jolly or not, put the turkey roasters away, make soup, and then go to the Mall Gallery and buy some Christmas cards, sparkly tee shirts, arts, crafts, and all the other things that make the season bright. But before you do that, please read, elsewhere in this Artyfacts, all about our first ever collaboration between the HAA and the Sierra Vista Symphony. We all know that the patrons of the Symphony tend to be among the more artistically discerning folks in town, so who would not want to have their work featured in such a venue. I admit, that some of Mussorgsky's subject matter may be a little bit strange and dated. It was 140 years ago, and halfway around the world, but, for me, the crazy nutcracker and the wild Russian witch, present some of the more interesting artistic challenges I've seen in a while. Google Baba Yaga. And of course, we don't have catacombs here. It's too hard even to dig a basement in most places, and there's way too much sunshine to make it creepy enough for a lantern. But we do have monuments to the dead, and even a Day of the Dead. We will need to work with what we have. I really think we can put together a good show. And please do plan to attend our annual Member's Meeting/Turkey Dinner, on Saturday, December 21, starting at 11:30 AM. This is when we elect new members to the Board. We do conduct a general meeting, albeit, a very informal one, and aside from the candidates for the Board, no votes are taken. Any serious issues you might have will need to be brought before the Board at another time for discussion and a vote. However, this is a good opportunity for you to bring any issues you may have to the attention of the Board members and ask that they be put on a future agenda. Hope to see you there! Enjoy the Holiday Season! Liz Horning, President

6 Workshops & Events CALL TO ARTISTS The HAA has been invited by the Sierra Vista Symphony to provide artwork to be displayed at a Symphony performance on March 8, 2014, featuring the Russian composer, Modeste Mussorgsky s work, PICTURES AT AN EXHIBI- TION. The music was written in 1874, and was inspired by the drawings of Mussorgsky s then recently deceased artist friend, Viktor Hartmann. Only six of those pictures survive, and we have but vague descriptions of the others. What we hope to do is put together an exhibit of original works by our members that, without getting too literal, are in keeping with the mood and the spirit of the music and the pictures that inspired it. We are open to considering all kinds of media, including photography. If you want to listen to the music, and learn more, just google Pictures at an Exhibition. If you think you have a piece in your archives that might be fitting, please a picture of it to me at lhorningfa@q.com, or call me at Or, if any of these concepts intrigue you enough that you would like to produce a new piece especially for this occasion, let me know. The deadline to submit work will be January 31. Here s what the music is all about. I have added my impressions of the musical moods. You may visualize different things. PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION The music starts with a Promenade: This is the main theme that recurs occasionally between the movements, of which there are 10. It is about viewers at an exhibit, moving from picture to picture. The music is processional in mood. 1. Gnomus. Hartmann s picture was said to depict a fantastic, shrieking, waddling, bandy-legged, gnomish nutcracker, just like the ones I m sure we all have stashed in drawers somewhere around the house. Okay. We ll have to make that one up. The mood is a little jerky, jumpy, off-kilter and unpredictable. 2. Old Castle. Hartmann s picture was said to depict a troubadour, singing a sad lament in front of a ruined fortress. The musical mood is dark, mysterious and sad, as for something lost. 3. Tuileries. Hartmann s picture was of children playing and arguing in the Paris Tuileries Garden. The musical mood is playful. 4. Cattle: Hartmann s picture was of a peasant in an old ox-drawn wagon, approaching from afar, while singing a plaintive melody, and then going off into the distance. Lonesome cowboy? Wagon train? Cavalry? Evocative of travel through a vast, majestic landscape. 5. Ballet of unhatched chicks. Hartmann s drawing is of children in costumes that are enormous eggshells. Only their arms, legs, and heads are showing. The music is a children s dance. The mood is playful, twirling, leaping and skittering. Could even be real chicks. 6a. Portrait of wealthy person, and 6b. Portrait of a poor person. In Hartmann s drawings, both were Jews from the Warsaw ghetto. The music was inspired by incantations heard in Jewish synagogues. The mood shifts back and forth from gravitas to a kind of pleading, like a conversation between the two men. 7. Marketplace: A bustling market, with shoppers and vendors bargaining over goods and prices. Mood is busy, animated, and lively, with arguments, shouting, and commerce. 8. Catacombs. In his picture, Hartmann is being led by a guide with a lantern through underground tombs. The musical mood is dark, mysterious, ominous, and somber. 9. Little hut on chicken s legs. Hartmann s drawing is of a fantastic clock, suggested by the legendary hut of Baba Yaga, the Russian witch, who eats bones that she grinds up with her mortar and pestle, which she also uses, instead of a broomstick, for flying around on dark and stormy nights. Her wild chase then turns sly and crafty, with lots of pouncing. 10. The Great Gate of Kiev. Hartmann s drawing was a design for a gate, which never was built, but the music was intended to invoke an imposing, massive, majestic edifice with great arches through which a jubilant procession goes marching. The mood is heroic, and ends with the pealing of bells. 6 Palo Verde Palettes The Palo Verde Palettes are having their Christmas Party on Sunday, 8 December 2013 in lieu of a regular meeting. Regular meetings will return in January Thank you for your support..
