1 PACIFIC NORTHWEST SCULPTORS NEWSLETTER May 2006 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: I haven t turned this machine on in three days and, in checking my , I note about a hundred messages. Most concern a reunion I m attending in May, involving 70 or so sailors. We will be doing,, as best we can, what sailors do when onshore. Well, some of it anyway. God help the hotel, nonetheless. Oddly, it s due to that year on an aircraft carrier that I have the odd career I have now, but that s a long story. There is also a message from Maria asking where the heck the president s message is and another from Rick Gregg, concerning the brochure for he is producing. That project is just about in the final stages. The purpose of the brochure is to publicize and, thereby, get a little better known by the public and the art community. In addition, it should help increase membership. Once the brochure is printed, we plan to ask members to supply the places they frequent, such as coffeehouses, art supply houses, schools etc. We will also keep a list of those locals so as to keep them supplied. Carole Murphy is working on member discounts for us at various art related retailers She has lined up quite a few and I believe Maria has gotten us one as well. Once the discounts are finalized we ll let you all know who is offering what to members. Expect that fairly soon. Rick and Paige Lambert are also working on the artist s yard sale tentatively scheduled for late June. If you have ugly art, old supplies and materials, anything art-related that you re sick of stumbling over, call or Paige or Rick. Paige s number is Rick s number is or by rickgregg@centurytel.net. will take a percentage of the proceeds but the lion s share will go to the seller. Mercifully short this president s message is but still not complete until I thank Julie Martin for hosting the last meeting at her new gallery in the Pearl the Bella Perla. She has a primo location on 9th between Davis and Everett. The food was tremendous, as usual. We picked up three new members and, as far as I know, we did not break anything, though I came close. So, thank you, Julie, for hosting us yet again. Thanks to you all, George Heath page 1

3 More fun at Julie Martin s new Bella Perla Gallery, on 9th, in the Pearl District. EARLY NOTIFICATION OF CALLS FOR ART SUBMISSIONS by Maria Wickwire, newsletter editor Some members have been understandably concerned that, by the time they receive their newsletters, the deadlines for submissions to Calls for Artists are either past or approaching too quickly for them to apply. Since our newsletter comes out once a month, like most of the publications which advertise for submissions, we re getting the information to you as soon as we can, but there is a way you can get a leg up on those important dates! Listed below are several free-access websites where you can find Calls for Artists or get your name on an list so you can receive notifications directly to your mailbox: Oregon Percent for the Arts Opportunities: meagan.atiyeh@state.or.us ( and request their publication) Regional Arts and Culture Council: and a Washington-based organization with local and national deadlines: The following is a subscription service for nationwide calls for artists. There is an annual fee to subscribe: Hopefully, this will be helpful for those who want to submit their work for exhibits, grants, scholarships, etc. We ll continue to publish Calls for Artists in our newsletter, too. page 3

4 Rob Arps: Fast Forward to the Future! by Patrick Gracewood The Wed, May 24, Educational meeting will be fast forward to sculpture s future. New technology changes the way we make sculpture. It can also change the way we think about making sculpture by allowing us to see and modify a prototype countless ways before anything exists in three dimensions. Sculptor Rob Arps has been working with high tech rendering and replication equipment (laser scanner, cad modeling software, a cnc router, etc.) since He will give us a tour of the working methods and tools necessary for the 21 Century sculptor. Due to the space limitations of Rob's studio, we will probably break up into two groups ( the early and the late comers?) to tour Rob's shop. Rob is a traditionally trained sculptor who honed his craft at the University of Oregon. His investigation into digital tools for the artist started while running a fast paced creation department in New York. Looking for a way to increase productivity without reducing the quality of work, he convinced his employer to buy some cad software and a cnc router. This dramatically changed the way the department worked. All of the architectural elements were being made on the computer and all the organic forms sculpted by hand with clay. However the mixing of hand-rendered and machine-rendered parts had a certain visual disconnection. The fix to this problem came in the form of a optical laser scanner. By bringing hand rendered objects into the 3d software as stereolithography, the creations were able to be milled as completed artwork. The problems of creating multiple molds, sizing very small modeling details, and mashing together a barrage of materials for a single visual effect were eliminated. As Rob discovered the commercial applications of this equipment, he also began to realize how it could serve his own creative interests. The power to bring an object into the virtual world, modify it, then back to the real world, and everything in between gives the artist an unquantifiable amount of choices to realize his vision, Rob says. There is something awesome about seeing an image you toiled over in clay until you were satisfied and then seeing it rendered in a piece of ebony that was so hard and unruly it could never be carved, he muses with a big smile. Like many artists, Rob was at first skeptical of new technology. He feared being replaced by it rather then recognizing it for what it really is a set of tools for the artist unlike any ever made but useless without the artist. Rob will discuss the many uses of computer rendering and replication tools, the services he offers, and how even the most technophobic artist can take advantage of them. This meeting is guaranteed to change the way you think about making art and open up new ideas for all. Bathing in Fire We will first meet at Patrick Gracewood's new studio: 4920 NE 55th Ave. Portland phone: Gracewood Studio is between Alberta and Prescott. Studio gates are directly across from the large stained glass cross in the churchyard. page 4
