I am also going to continue designing through a real life version of the company on my design board Polaroid Design, open for business. Polaroid Design The main reason for me doing a design company for my board was so that I could use the logo, website and other material for my real business. This was a big influence, as every concept or idea had to be good enough for me to want to use it myself. Concepts and ideas came from looking at artist models and other material. I believe this is key to making a successful art board. The theme of incorporating vibrant high colour into simple minimalistic shapes came about due to the fact that I love minimalism. However, I think minimalism lacks a degree of character and a wow factor, so I looked to add that with colour. All of my work was done in Photoshop CS6 or InDesign CC. The only materials I used were photos taken with my iphone. 1
Last year in my design class I was incredibly organised. I finished well before the deadline (the direct opposite of my Level 2 board). I think this was due to the fact I just loved what I was doing being passionate about the topic you choose helps a lot! Daniel Marchbank, Nelson College for Boys Outstanding Scholarship I am going to be attending Yoobee School of Design in Wellington, studying towards a Diploma of Computer Graphic Design. Vulture I had the initial idea of our impact on the environment, which opened up many design situations that involve interaction with the environment around us. I then went on to research pollution to inspire ideas that could be used in my work. Photography; Layering/montaging; Photoshop; Healing brush tool in Photoshop (landscapes); Adobe Illustrator (logos); Light flares to bring the green colour into my work; Indian ink Once you get near the end of the folio it gets insanely hard to come up with good ideas, but as long as you keep your mind open to new things, some really awesome ideas can start flowing. Debbie Zhao, Westlake Girls High School I will be attending my last year of high school at Westlake Girls and completing my NCEA Level 3. 2
Evertree After a long initial brainstorning process, I selected this topic as it was one close to home (New Zealand is one of the greenest countries!). My intention was to create a new image for environmental sustainability that diverged away from the clichéd green leaf or recycling symbol look that is too often associated with eco-friendliness. I was inspired by not only plants, but also sea life, insects and all sorts of creatures; my aim was to incorporate all the elements of Earth. I chose to do a lot of the work by hand. This included a great amount of cutting and piecing together. In other instances (such as during the composition of the illustrated typography), I also used Photoshop to scale particular objects, as well as adjusting colours. Following my key artist model Alexis Mackenzie, I sourced many of my images from old books and magazines. Other than occasionally losing tiny cut-outs, a challenge I faced was keeping my work from being too repetitive, while still maintaining the same theme and style. Otherwise, I undoubtedly enjoyed working on Evertree and am hopeful that perhaps this project will inspire me again in the future. Jack Clarke, Lindisfarne College Studying at Victoria University. OP THEORY My work is based on ideas of contemporary street wear combined with ideas inspired by the story and artwork of Alice in Wonderland. This gave me a theme that I liked and enjoyed working on, and that others found interesting. 3
I tried to be original by taking my own photos of my friends and our clothes and also my own drawings, and incorporated the use of cards and wire. Photoshop allowed me to alter raw ideas and combine them to get the finished product I wanted and that hopefully others would like. Even though I enjoyed working on my designs, being stuck for ideas happens to everyone frustration sets in and late nights staring at a blank page become a common occurrence. One of the things that helped me to produce work was learning the difference between relating and repeating ideas. Jaynee Franklin, Whangarei Girls High School Outstanding Scholarship My plan for 2014 is to study a Bachelor of Law at Auckland University. Finding the Forgotten; Unearth your Aboriginal Ancestors My chosen campaign is aimed at young people of Aboriginal descent in order to convince them of the importance of their ancestors. My campaign is derived from my personal Aboriginal ancestry and allowed me to explore my own heritage, as I previously didn t know very much at all about Aboriginal traditions. Because of this, I wanted to emphasise the idea that remembering your past makes you who you are. This campaign would be based in Australia as it is directed at young Aborigines who have lost sight of their ancestry. Photography was one of the main elements in my board and this was one of the ways that I was able to establish my ideas. I delved into many aspects of Aboriginal culture including the language and artists, as 4
well as objects/actions which could represent finding your ancestors. From this point, I gained inspiration from a wide range of designs, which I was continually researching as I developed my work. A big highlight was how my board sparked my interest in learning more about my ancestry, as I otherwise wouldn t have gained such a deep understanding of the Aboriginal culture. My board did consume a lot of my time, and details such as the Aboriginal face painting required a lot of patience, for which I am very grateful to my model. One of the other huge highlights was that, after a year spent developing my board, I was able to see how my work had grown and improved, which gave me a great sense of accomplishment and achievement. I am very thankful to my teachers. Oliver Cain, Takapuna Grammar Scholarship My plan for 2014 is to work on my personal art goals to craft ideas into actual works of art. Then, once I have constructed a substantial amount of work, I wish to try and present some of it in galleries. I then wish to further my education at art school. I See Red There are many stereotypes blondes are dim, brunettes are smart and dependable but perhaps of all the stereotypes out there, no one suffers more injustice than redheads! Bluey, gingernut, carrot-top, ranga, tomato head, duracell, gingerbread man these are just some of the many names that I and many other redheads are called. Throughout history, we ve been subjected to discrimination and prejudice, being viewed as untrustworthy, mischevious, temperamental and lustful. In ancient Egypt, red hair was seen as unlucky and red-haired girls were 5
burnt alive. According to Greek myths, redheads turn into vampires when they die. It can be hard to grow up with red hair, to endure the teasing. It is the rarest hair colour and we can stand out, we can feel awkward and self-conscious. However, like many other redheads, I have learnt to accept my hair colour and even to embrace and enjoy it, using it at times to my advantage. I know for a fact that we have more fun and I am excited to learn that we go grey less quickly! I have taken my experience as a redhead to create this design board and raise further awareness of our uniqueness. I hope that it will serve to help more redheads to feel confident and proud to be different and to help us and others realise that it is more than hair colour that defines us and makes us who we are. Rory MacIntyre, Wellington College Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Law at Auckland University. Stil Festival 2014 I researched album artwork and merchandise from musicians whose music and image I liked. From there I took note of different ideas I could use in my work, such as orange circles to represent the sun. I used a very vibrant colour scheme as I thought it would convey the summery theme of the festival. Music has always been a passion of mine, and that was my primary inspiration in advertising a music festival. I used photography, illustration, painting and some sculpture. I designed using these hands-on processes because I think the modernisation of standard design has meant that it is becoming more and more computer generated. I think this means that design styles are becoming more copy and paste and this stifles creativity and originality. I 6
veered away from this pattern to ensure originality. A high point was finishing the portfolio, seeing all my hard work displayed on one document was very pleasing. An issue that arose was the lack of humanity in the designs to begin with. To combat this I took photos of myself and incorporated them into my design. A low point was having not done any wok in the first half of the year. This actually turned out to be a blessing as I really kicked in to gear in the second half of the year after realising how bad my situation was. Samuel Munneke, Wanganui High School Outstanding Scholarship Bachelor of Science at Victoria University of Wellington, majoring in mathematics and physics. Planning to continue with design at a postgraduate level. Intelligent Design I became a glorified thief when starting my board. I began with the vague idea of a fashion label and then asked myself the question, what is good fashion? It s just ideas and design, conveyed through clothing as a canvas. So I started stealing ideas from other canvases, namely architecture. By conveying architectural ideas through clothing, I made them mine and created something new. My art teacher this year was a photographer who took on the challenge of teaching both photography and design, so I was surrounded by vast and spacious photography boards. This strongly affected the amount of photography integrated into my board and the minimalistic approach to layout. 7
The highest point of this year s design was physically creating a shop. I had to step away from my computer and my beloved Photoshop and do some interior design work. It was a challenging application; searching for the perfect objects and amalgamating them with one another. I found it truly rewarding being able to sit down and drink tea in a space of my own design. Shah Mohebbi, Nelson College for Boys Scholarship Bachelor of Art and Design at the Media Design School in Auckland. Nine I tried to emphasise the act of movement throughout my folio board. My overall genre was health and fitness, and I wanted to express it in ways that would grab the audience. I wanted to create momentum throughout my board, so I tried to explore movement through still and threedimensional images. I decided to use my traditional art skills in conjunction with vector-based design to create a sort of hybrid between the two. I took different approaches after analysing artist models that shared the style and look I was going for. It was starting my second panel where I developed my way of thinking and decided to go all out with my own artistic style and leave mediocre design behind! 8
Tia Ebert, Papanui High School Developing a portfolio for Massey University in 2015 (studying either fine arts of visual communication design). Nine Based on my experience as a media and magazine consumer, I thought about and researched design and content trends in current publications to find a niche. I discovered there is a lack of printed content that inspires or helps youth develop a positive identity. After deciding on my content, I looked at sites like Pinterest and Behance to develop ideas for my aesthetic. I wrote a brief for design challenges I would need to complete and made a timeline for when each task needed to be completed. For each challenge I started with basic thumbnails, then took the best of those ideas and developed them until they became the final products. There was a lot of online research and trial and error involved. Highs and lows that arose during the I decided to restart my whole folio with eight weeks to go as the name I originally chose for my magazine didn t lend itself well to logo design. Once I found the right name, everything flowed much more easily and I really enjoyed the process of putting my folio together. The high point was definitely seeing my work being printed out and then sticking it down. Trenay Moodley, Hutt Valley High School I was chosen to be a recipient of the Yoobee School of Design Scholarship award for 2014, so I will be studying graphic design there. 9
Whoami I picked an issue that has a large impact on our community identity problems affect a lot of teenagers in New Zealand. I researched this topic and developed ideas based on that. I used many artist models to help develop and show my ideas, including New Zealand designer Zoe Weir. My main focus was to make sure my work appealed to girls, so I used soft colours and relevant imagery in my designs. All of my work was created using Photoshop and Illustrator. A lot of layering was used in Photoshop. I experimented with many fonts and imagery to create my designs and took inspiration from sites like Pinterest and Tumblr. A low was being very unsure about my initial ideas and spending a lot of time recreating concepts. Also heaps of time was spent working on my design, which made it hard to stay focused on other subjects. A high would have to be finally getting everything stuck down and ready for marking, and receiving a scholarship from this portfolio for future study.
