Guideposts MARCH Dear Friends, 2017 THIS AND THAT Dear Friends, Again, this month, there are so many changes to note and remember. The Gross Clinic is leaving us on March 27 to have a change of scenery at PAFA for a few years. The Chagall ballet backdrop is leaving for an extended vacation ( long term loan ) in early to mid-april to join its family the backdrops for scenes 1,2 and 4 in the Aomori Museum in Japan. A backdrop of Gehry s design will take its place. The Gehry model will reside in Gallery 154. You may have wondered how long the 10:15 am tour should be. Volunteer Services wants all tours to be one hour, including the 10:15 am tour. Therefore, you may return to the desk at 11:15 am after a full hour tour. Beginning June 1, you may sign up for August Noon Collection tours on the website. Noon tour scheduling will then coincide with duty scheduling, making it easier for all of us to plan our schedules. On your travels through the museum, please take a look at one of the new maps to get your bearings! Regards to all, Barbara P.S. Did you know?: When Vincent Van Gogh lived in Paris with Theo, in his studio, he kept a lacquered box containing balls of brightly colored yarn that he endlessly twined and untwined to test the interaction of colors exactly the procedure described by Chevreul, who had developed his theories as director of dyes for the royal looms at Gobelens. Naifeh, Steven and Smith, Gregory White, Van Gogh, The Life, Random House, NY, 2012 at p Color wheel created by Michel Eugène Chevreul

NEWS FROM VOLUNTEER SERVICES 27, and I invite you to introduce yourself when you see him around the office. Victoria Fletcher, Manager of Volunteer Services Dear Guides, I ll begin with an exciting Volunteer Services update: As mentioned in my February 22 , I am delighted to share that the Volunteer Services department will have a new member joining the team as a Temporary Assistant for Guides and Interns, a position that will last through mid- August. This position will assist with the coordination and support of Guides daily activities (while Becky Winnington is out on maternity leave, tentatively beginning in midto late April) as well as assist with the planning and implementation of the summer 2017 Museum Studies Internship Program. I ask that you join me in welcoming Jacob Looney. Many of you will recognize Jacob, as he currently is a Visitor Services Assistant, a role he has held since We believe Jacob will be an excellent fit for our departmental needs over the coming months and plan for there to be a seamless transition when Becky goes out on leave. We will be in touch with all Guides if there are any changes to the normal communication flow in the coming months please stay tuned. In the meantime, we ask that you communicate with Becky per usual. Jacob s first day will be on Monday, February GUIDE PROGRAMS For all programs, no ticket or reservation is required. Please feel free to join us for any or all sessions. Accessibility Training: Using Verbal Description in the Galleries With Rebecca Granados, Coordinator of Accessible Training and Education Monday, March 6, 10:00 a.m. noon or Saturday, March 11, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Meet in the South Terrace Conference Rooms A and B, ground floor How can we engage visitors who are blind or have low vision in the galleries? How can we use verbal description as a universal technique to create a more inclusive experience and engage with all visitors? Please join us for the second in a series of accessibility trainings offered exclusively for Guides. This training will introduce various techniques for using verbal description on public tours, with the majority of the training spent practicing in the galleries. Exclusive Guide Program: Core Project and Groundbreaking Presentation With Jonathan Peterson, Director of Development Thursday, March 23, at 11:00 a.m. (South Terrace Conference Rooms) or Saturday, March 25, at 10:00 a.m. (Perelman Media Room) Join Jonathan Peterson as he shares information about future plans for the

Museum, with a particular focus on the Core Project as well as the Pay What You Wish Open House celebrating the groundbreaking on March 30. walk your tour route prior to your tour galleries, walkways, and works of art will change constantly. All details are subject to change. MUSEUM UPDATES AND REMINDERS 10:15 a.m. Tour Time It has recently been brought to our attention that there is some confusion around the length of the 10:15 a.m. tour. Our internal dialogue to visitors is that all tours, public or private, are approximately one hour in length. This means that the 10:15 a.m. tour should also be about one hour long, ending around 11:15 a.m. When we changed the start time of the 10:00 a.m. tour to 10:15 a.m., we realized it would mean some overlap with the desk. Since we prioritize the tours over desk duty, it is okay if Guides leading the 10:15 a.m. tour are 15 minutes late reporting to their desk duties. It is also okay if the desk is short-handed or empty during those 15 minutes. Name That Museum Wing Tour We are exploring the idea of a new title for the collection tour which covers the European Art wing of the Museum. Please send along any ideas to both Victoria Fletcher at victoria.fletcher@philamuseum.org and Becky Winnington at rwinnington@philamuseum.org. GALLERY AND ARTWORK CHANGES This section includes large-impact changes to the galleries but by no means will encompass all gallery and artwork changes. In that vein, we strongly encourage you to 3 P a g e Gallery 154 Gallery 154 (one of the galleries closest to the Great Stair Hall in the European Art wing, where some Barbizon pieces and Frémiet s Joan of Arc sculpture are located) is getting a makeover. Currently, works are being deinstalled to make way for an installation of one of the Gehry models as well as labels and large graphics describing the core project work. During the reinstallation period, the doorway between gallery 154 and 155 will be closed off for the foreseeable future. This installation will open at the end of March and will be on view for the next couple of years or so. This will be an opportunity for the Museum to publicly showcase future plans for the Museum, and we encourage you to briefly stop by the gallery with visitors during your tours to talk about this exciting work. Rodin Museum s New Exhibition, The Kiss Discover what passion looks like in the hands of a master sculptor is the one hundredth anniversary of Auguste Rodin s death. To mark the occasion, the Museum will take part in worldwide celebrations of the artist s work and legacy with special exhibitions and programs. A new installation features marbles, bronzes, plasters, and more exploring the artist s intimate and powerful depictions of romantic love and couplings. Eakins The Gross Clinic Thomas Eakins The Gross Clinic will return to PAFA this spring. During the week of

March 27, gallery 111 will be closed while the work is deinstalled and other works are rotated. The gallery is scheduled to reopen on April 1. Marcel Duchamp and the Fountain Scandal An upcoming exhibition celebrating the centennial of Duchamp s provocative and influential work, Fountain, and its impact on modern art will be installed in gallery 182. The exhibition will run from April 1 through December 3, There will be some installation work occurring in that gallery in the weeks leading up to the exhibition. Updated Museum Map Due to the continual Core Project changes, the Museum has designed and printed a new Museum map, which may be found on the front lines. Please familiarize yourself with it so you may be able to best serve our visitors. CORE PROJECT UPDATES Core Project updates will be communicated to all Guides either via or through your Guide newsletters, and we thank you in advance for being diligent in reviewing this information. Due to the vast amount of changes at the Museum there are changes daily we strongly encourage you to walk your tour route prior to your tour galleries, walkways, and works of art will change constantly. Cafeteria News The Cafeteria closed on Thursday, February 16, and the Museum Café reopened to staff and visitors on Friday, February 24, in the restaurant space. Look forward to grab-andgo salads, sandwiches and seasonal sides 4 P a g e as well as hot soups and made-to-order burrito bar! Core Project The Core Project, the next phase of the Museum s Facilities Master Plan, has begun and is scheduled to be completed in spring As is the case in all construction projects, but particularly true in a renovation project as complex as this one, schedules are subject to change. The below Museum spaces are now closed: Existing Cafeteria Construction will begin on a new food services area Seminar Room Groundbreaking of the Core Project The Museum is celebrating the official groundbreaking of the Core Project phase of our Facilities Master Plan on Thursday, March 30, with a Pay What You Wish Open House from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The day will feature all kinds of wonderful touches: free coffee and snacks all day, sneak-peek tours of the Core Project, an exciting video about our future on loop in the Great Stair Hall, and a building alive with activity and excitement. Concurrently, the Museum will also launch a new section of our website devoted to Our Future, which will include new and revised renderings of the renovated and expanded spaces. We will introduce an online interactive featuring the Core Project with three 360 experiences (of the future Lenfest Hall, the North Entrance, and the C- level view of the Forum and Vaulted Walkway). On March 30, we will also open gallery 154, with an installation focusing on Frank Gehry s architectural model. Internal Space Reference System As a reminder, the Museum internally refers to its spaces in levels (C, B, A/ground, 1, and

2) and sections (1 7) see the image below. As point of references, the new Volunteer Services office is in A-1 and Rubens Prometheus Bound is in 2-5. We will be using this reference system when communicating future updates. PEER REVIEW Many thanks to all Guides who have scheduled and completed their peer reviews. Have you scheduled your Peer Review? Spring begins on March 20. It is time for flowers, sunshine, warmer weather and your Peer Review! March is the ideal time to check your desk duty schedule and me to request a peer review. The process is easy and userfriendly. Once this review is completed, you will have almost 2 years before you have to plan for your next one. The Peer Review Committee is eager to help you and appreciates your quick response. OTHER NEWS TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT S NEW ON OUR WEBSITE? At the beginning of March, the images will change on our website. All of the works are from our collection and share the theme of music, song and dance. EMERGENCY NUMBER: CALL VISITOR SERVICES IF YOU HAVE A LAST MINUTE EMERGENCY. THEY WILL LET THE APPROPRIATE PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOUR ABSENCE. Keep up to date by checking on Continuing Education Opportunities by check the web site. Events are listed both under Continuing Education and identified on the calendar. 5 P a g e

boys came back to the desk to show me what they did and how much they loved it. I then told him how to get to the Rodin and sure enough they came back after the Rodin to tell me how much they loved it. Cole was very proud to tell me that he keeps a sketchbook and he showed me his sketch of the thinker and his drawing of Jules Mastbaum. It gave me a great deal of pleasure to see this grandmother and her second grader and a third grader have a wonderful day In Vaudeville (Dancer with Chorus), 1918, Charles Demuth, American Watercolor and graphite pencil on laid paper Sheet: 12 11/16 8 1/16 inches ( cm) A. E. Gallatin Collection, 1952, Charles Demuth, a lifelong resident of Lancaster Pennsylvania, used watercolor to express his love of circus and vaudeville performance. While living in Paris from 1912 to 1914 he was influenced the emergence of cubism. The use of pencil and watercolor washes gives this piece its lively movement. --Jane Solomon Cole Cameron, Third Grade, The Thinker MARCH: CONSIDER A GIFT THAT GIVES BACK Establish a CGA A WONDERFUL DAY AT THE MUSEUM Throughout the day on Saturday, February 4 I had an opportunity to speak with Alison Gallion and her two grandsons Cole and Cameron. It started when I gave them suggestions of things to do including the handout about myths and superheroes. In addition to providing important support to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, it offers a reliable source of fixed income payments for life, a charitable deduction for tax purposes, is easy to set up, and is flexible with payments starting now or later.

If you use the devices and have any issues or questions, please let Visitor Services know so they can assist. ACCESSIBILITY UPDATE Rebecca Granados, Coordinator of Accessible Training and Education Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) are technologies developed to enhance the ability of a person with a hearing loss to hear better. At the museum, these devices are used on tours in the galleries, during lectures, and in classroom spaces. There are two sets of ALDs in the kiosk closet at the West Entrance. A third set will be added soon. The museum uses an FM system including two devices: a transmitter and a receiver. Guides wear the transmitter (marked GUIDE) and speak into a microphone. Visitors wear the receiver and use headphones to hear the guide. If your visitors use hearing aids with a T-coil switch, you can offer them a neck loop. The neck loop is used instead of headphones. Make sure the transmitter and the receivers are on the same channel. There are troubleshooting tips in the closet by the devices. After your tour, return the devices to the charging dock. Turn the devices off before putting them back on the dock. The red lights will be off, however, the lights may flash as the devices are recharging. The devices are checked every Monday to ensure the 7 P a g e
