The Graduate Information Sessions will provide a platform for dialogue and interaction between prospective students and HBKU s faculty and admissions staff. Scheduled to be held before the upcoming 2017 application deadline, the sessions are designed to allow prospective students to ask questions and get clarifications about the curriculum, research opportunities, admission process, and requirements for their program of choice, and better equip them in making the right decision. Nasser Al Binali, Head of Admissions at HBKU, noted: Our Graduate Information Sessions are the perfect opportunity for prospective students to ask detailed questions about the various graduate programmes offered at HBKU. It is a one-stop-shop to help them gather all the extra information they need to make an informed decision on pursuing their higher education at HBKU. We have arranged for attendees to engage with faculty and staff from each college so that they can receive the best guidance possible before submitting an application. HBKU s College of Islamic Studies will be hosting their information session on the MA in Islamic Studies and MS in Islamic Finance on December 11 at the college building. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences information session will take place at the Liberal Arts and Sciences building on December 12, and will focus on their MA programsin Translation Studies and Audiovisual Translation. The College of Science and Engineering (CSE), and the College of Law and Public Policy (CLPP) will host their sessions at the HBKU Student Center on December 13 and 14 respectively. CSE representatives will be open to detailed queries on their PhD programme in Computer Science and Engineering, MS and PhD in Sustainable Energy, MS and PhD in Sustainable Environment, MS and PhD in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, MS in Cybersecurity, and MS in Data Science and Engineering. CLPP will be covering their JD law programme. ABP celebrates Qatar National Day Under the umbrella of preuniversity education, students from Qatar Foundation s Academic Bridge Program (ABP) celebrated National Day with traditional dances and puzzles, poetry, and a sea of burgundy flags. The event was held early so that students could celebrate and express their patriotism before they begin semester examinations on December 11. Students begin winter break on December 18. The celebrations started with an introductory welcome by the Master of Ceremonies, Khalid Al Awi and Holy Quran recitation from Abdulrahman Al Saad, both students are at the ABP. Then the National Anthem was played after that Moza Al Boainain, ABP Assistant Director for Student Services, began her comments by extending warm congratulations and blessings, on behalf of the ABP, to Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Father Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and the Qatari people on the occasion of the National Day of their beloved country, Qatar. Moza then went on to request that, God Almighty perpetuate the blessing of safety, security, splendour and well-being and that God protect the Emir of Qatar, and perpetuate the grace of health and wellness on him. The event was organised by the ABP Student Services department in collaboration with the ABP Student Association and a number of enthusiastic student and alumni volunteers. Faculty, staff and ABP students gathered to experience the traditional Qatari setting. The festivities included several presentations, a brief history of Qatar presented by Moza Al Kaabi and Mariam Mohammad and a speech about the Founder of Qatar by Fahad Al Thani and AL Reem Al Kuwari. The traditional Arda (sword dance) was also performed by a group of current ABP students and alumni. Among the other attractions was a traditional sadu tent furnished with traditional Qatari furniture and some traditional Qatari dishes. A traditional games and free face painting for kids were also available. Patrons even brought a classic car and traditional animals such as falcons. A traditional Qatari national music was played.

The inflight comforts that were once a given are now nothing more than a nostalgic reminder of decades past. Out went the free checked bag, in came the fees for those few extra inches of leg room. Want to make sure you sit next to your children on a flight? On some airlines, there s a fee for that. Now, on United Airlines, you won t necessarily get the use of an overhead bin, without paying more money. The overhead bin: one of the last sacred conveniences of air travel, as an angry Senator Charles E Schumer, New York, put it on Sunday as he denounced the move. Of course, the airlines, when they come up with a new fee for something that was once free, always say that s not what they re doing. They re just creating a fare tier that does not include it. As part of the company s new pricing tier, Basic Economy, passengers who purchase the airline s cheapest fares will only be allowed one personal item that must fit under a seat. Additionally, customers will not be assigned seats until the day of departure, meaning people on the same ticket could be separated. The move marks the first time a large US airline limits low-fare customers to one carry on-bag that fits under a seat. The company expects such fare initiatives to add $1bn to its annual operating income by 2020, as more customers pay to check luggage or select higher fares for two carry-on bags. Of course, next to cable providers, airlines are the companies Americans love the most to hate. Many on Twitter saw United s new tier as a mere invention.

From WHO radio: How long before we have to pay for oxygen? Discuss We need to boycott United Airlines, tweeted a woman identifying herself as Sandra Lespinasse. Schumer called the proposed fare structure one of the most restrictive policies on airline passengers we have seen in a long time. It seems like each year, airlines devise a new, ill-conceived plan to hit consumers and it has simply got to stop. It s definitely no more complicated than cooking a whole turkey, and I think it tastes far better. Other folks shy away because they ve heard that duck is too fatty and rich. Sure enough, there is a fair amount of fat in duck, but most of it is in and under the skin. The meat itself actually is quite lean. And surprise! duck fat, unlike beef fat and most kinds of poultry fat, boasts some of the same healthy attributes as olive oil. The goal is a bird with crispy skin and moist meat. The easiest way to make it happen? Roast the duck low and slow, pricking the skin every so often to drain out the fat. (Do be careful, however, not to prick the meat; you don t want to lose any juices from the meat.) The end result is a wonderfully tasty duck swimming in a French-style sauce. Fancy! And much more interesting than turkey. Your guests will think you are a culinary genius. Bistro-Style Slow-Roasted Duck Start to finish: 4 hours 50 minutes (50 minutes active) Ingredients (Servings 4) 5 1/2- to 6-pound Pekin (Long Island) duck Kosher salt and ground black pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped 1 small carrot, coarsely chopped 2 cloves garlic, smashed with side of a knife 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 cup dry red grape juice 1 stalk celery, coarsely chopped 2 sprigs fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 3 cups low-sodium chicken broth 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons drained bottled green peppercorns, packed in brine 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard Method: Heat the oven to 250 F. Remove the neck Roasted duck is easier and more delicious than you think and giblets from the cavity of the duck, pat dry and reserve. (Save the liver for another use, such as sauteing and serving on toast.) Cut the last two joints of the wings off and reserve. Remove the excess fat from the cavity of the duck and cut off the flap of skin at the back end of the duck. (You can save the skin and fat to render into duck fat for future use.) Rinse the duck under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Using the tip of a paring knife, prick the duck all over, in 1/2-inch intervals, inserting the knife at an angle to pierce just the skin, not the flesh. Make sure to prick the skin around the leg thigh joint thoroughly, as there is a lot of fat stored there. Season the duck well with salt and pepper. Place on a rack in a roasting pan and roast on the oven s middle shelf for 3 1/2 hours, removing the roasting pan after the first and second hour of roasting to re-prick the duck skin. After the duck has roasted for 3 1/2 hours, carefully pour off all the fat at the bottom of the roasting pan (reserving it for other uses, such as sauteing potatoes), and increase the oven temperature to 450 F. Return the duck to the oven and roast it for 10 minutes. Transfer the duck to a platter, cover with foil, then let it rest for 30 minutes before carving. While in the duck is roasting, cut the neck and wings into 1 1/2-inch pieces. In a large saucepan over medium-high, heat the vegetable oil. Add the neck, giblets and wings. Cook, stirring often, until golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and add the onion, carrot and garlic. Cook until the vegetables are lightly browned, 5 to 8 minutes. Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the juice and bring to a boil, stirring to pick up any browned bits on the bottom of the pan. Boil until most of the juice has evaporated. Add the celery, thyme, bay leaf, broth and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cook, skimming off any scum that rises to the surface and adding water to the saucepan if the liquid dips below the bones, until the duck is ready to come out of the oven. While the duck is resting, strain the stock and discard the solids. Measure the liquid. You should have about 1 1/2 cups. If you have more, boil the liquid down. If you have less, add water. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and 1/4 cup water. In the saucepan, bring the duck stock to a boil, add the flour mixture in a stream, whisking. Bring the mixture back to a boil and simmer 4 minutes. Stir in the green peppercorns and mustard, then season the sauce with salt and pepper. Carve the duck and serve each portion with some of the sauce.

9 WEDNESDAY 7 DECEMBER 2016 HEALTH 09 New immunotherapy shows hope in preventing leukemia relapse IANS A new genetically engineered T-cell therapy may have the potential to prevent the relapse of a Handful of nuts daily cuts risk of heart disease, cancer IANS type of cancer, US scientists have found. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects immature blood cell growth. The research showed that AML is in remission among patients who received this experimental T-cell therapy after a bone marrow transplant. Giving these cells when the disease is in remission after transplant might actually be helping patients who have a high risk of relapsing to not relapse down the line, said Aude Chapuis, physician at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the US. Conversely, in transplant-only patients, the transplants produced remissions, but more than a quarter of them relapsed within just 10 months, the researchers said. For the trial, the team focussed on 12 AML patients who were undergoing bone marrow transplant and had certain genetic or disease characteristics that decreased the chance of long-term transplant success. Certain T-cells from each patient s transplant donor were genetically engineered to produce receptors that allowed the T-cells to recognise, very specifically, WT1 -- a target molecule 10 to 1,000 times more common in leukemia cells. Then the patients leukemic bone marrow and blood cells were destroyed and replaced with healthy cells from their donors. A month later, when the team examined these 12 patients marrow, they found no trace of the cancers. Rapidly thereafter, once the transplanted cells fully engrafted, each patient then received up to 10 billion of the genetically engineered donor cells, infused into their arm through an IV. The results were presented at the 2016 annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology in San Diego, California. Eating at least 20 gram of nuts a day -- equivalent to a handful -- can reduce the risk of a wide range of diseases including heart disease and cancer, new research has found. Handful of nuts daily can cut people s risk of coronary heart disease by nearly 30 per cent, their risk of cancer by 15 per cent, and their risk of premature death by 22 per cent, the study said. The study included all kinds of tree nuts, such as hazel nuts and walnuts, and also peanuts -- which are actually legumes. The results - published in the journal BMC Medicine - were in general similar whether total nut intake, tree nuts or peanuts were analysed. What makes nuts so potentially beneficial is their nutritional value, said study co-author Dagfinn Aune from Imperial College London. Nuts and peanuts are high in fibre, magnesium, and polyunsaturated fats -- nutrients that are beneficial for cutting cardiovascular disease risk and which can reduce cholesterol levels, Aune said. Some nuts, particularly walnuts and pecan nuts are also high in antioxidants, which can fight oxidative stress and possibly reduce cancer risk, Aune explained. The research team analysed 29 published studies from around the world that involved up to 819,000 participants, including more than 12,000 cases of coronary heart disease, 9,000 cases of stroke, 18,000 cases of cardiovascular disease and cancer, and more than 85,000 deaths. While there was some variation between the populations that were studied, such as between men and women, people living in different regions, or people with different risk factors, the researchers found that nut consumption was associated with a reduction in disease risk across most of them. Even though nuts are quite high in fat, they are also high in fibre and protein, and there is some evidence that suggests nuts might actually reduce your risk of obesity over time, Aune said. The study also found that if people consumed on average more than 20 gram of nuts per day, there was little evidence of further improvement in health outcomes.

It will be the first time for the comedian, who has hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live! on ABC since it launched in 2003 and garnered praise for his work as host of this year s Emmys television awards. Yes, I am hosting the Oscars. This is not a prank. And if it is, my revenge will be terrible & sweet, the 49-year-old New Yorker joked on Twitter. His selection was later confirmed by Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd, the multiple Oscar- and Emmy-nominated duo producing the 89th Oscars ceremony, which airs live on ABC television on February 26. Jimmy s ability to connect with people is what makes him a singular choice for this job, they said in a joint statement. His frank observations, relatable persona, wry humor and love of all kinds of film make him a natural fit for the Oscars stage. Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said she was thrilled to have a host who knows who he is, he knows the audience while CEO Dawn Hudson described Kimmel as razor sharp, funny and unpredictable. ABC, which pays the Academy a reported $75 million a year to broadcast the Oscars, struck a new deal in August giving executives more creative input. Jimmy is the perfect choice for us. He is deeply rooted in the Hollywood community and gifted at connecting with an audience as the consummate emcee, said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey. Kimmel s appointment comes unusually late this time around, as the host is usually booked months in advance of the Oscars. It will end speculation over several other possibilities for presenter, including fellow comedians Ellen DeGeneres and Tina Fey. Chris Rock hosted the 2016 ceremony, which suffered an eight-year low in ratings, averaging 34.5 million viewers. The African American comic actor s second stint presenting was overshadowed by a social media backlash against the lack of racial diversity among the nominees, under the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. Priyanka Chopra s Baywatch release date pushed back The release date of upcoming action-comedy film Baywatch, which marks the Hollywood debut of Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, has been pushed back by a week to May 26, Paramount Pictures has announced. The film, which was earlier slated for May 19, will now release alongside Johnny Depp s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales and Rebecca Ferguson and Jake Gyllenhaal s Life on the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, reports variety.com. The 75-year-old, whose lyrics have influenced generations of fans, has had a subdued response to the honour, remaining silent for weeks following the news in October he had won the prize for literature. This year s Laureate in Literature, Bob Dylan, will not be participating in the Nobel Week but he has provided a speech which will be read at the banquet, the foundation said in a statement. Sending along the speech does not exempt the American songwriter from holding a lecture at a place and a type of his choosing, the only requirement by the Nobel foundation. Rock legend Patti Smith will perform a version of Dylan s A Hard Rain s A-Gonna Fall at the ceremony on December 10 in Stockholm, which is the same day as the banquet. Dylan said in a letter on November 16 that he would not attend the ceremony because he had pre-existing commitments, in an announcement that did not come as a surprise to observers. Several other prize winners have skipped the Nobel ceremony in the past for various reasons -- Doris Lessing, who was too old; Harold Pinter, because he was hospitalised, and Elfriede Jelinek, who has social phobia. Dylan did not say a word about his prize on the day it was announced, October 13, when he was performing in Las Vegas. The writer of Blowin In The Wind, Like A Rolling Stone, and Mr. Tambourine Man confined himself to his songs. The Swedish Academy said it respected Dylan s decision, but that it was unusual for a Nobel laureate not to come to Stockholm to accept the award in person. Asked on October 28 by Britain s Daily Telegraph newspaper if he would attend the Nobel prize winners banquet, Dylan said: Absolutely. If it s at all possible. Academy member Swedish writer Per Wastberg accused Dylan of being impolite and arrogant, and said it was unprecedented that the academy did not know if Dylan intended to pick up his award. But the first songwriter to win the prestigious award in literature is expected to come to Stockholm early next year. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing the project though his Di Bonventura Pictures banner. The film is set in a small Mexican town under attack by the drug cartel. The story centres on five worldweary bodyguards who are signed on to protect a Mexican politician after his father is murdered by a cartel, ahead of an election, reports variety.com. Bruce Willis was attached several years ago to star in Five Against A Bullet but is no longer on the project. Carnahan is currently attached only as the writer. Chan, who has been acting in films since late 1960s, has appeared in more than 150 films. Chan s upcoming movies include Railroad Tigers, Bleeding Steel and The Foreigner.

The forces fueling this paradox are complex: Grocery stores think they ll assume legal liability in donating food. Farmers allow edible, but homely fruit to rot in fear it won t sell. Bananas blacken on all our shelves. But the reasons behind this waste didn t feel so complex to a teenage girl named Maria Rose Belding on a chilly Iowa day five years ago. The whole thing felt simple. It felt wrong. It felt like something had to change. Belding, then a volunteer at a local food pantry in Pella, had just thrown out hundreds of boxes of expired mac and cheese in front of numerous people lining up outside to collect food. We were throwing away all of this food just because we couldn t communicate, Belding, then a freshman in high school, remembers venting that day. That frustration would ultimately lead the American University sophomore to develop a groundbreaking innovation in the long - and often inefficient - war on hunger. After years of research, Belding, 20, has founded a sprawling online network that connects thousands of food pantries in 24 states, allowing them to quickly share surplus food that might have otherwise gone to waste. Pantries simply post their excess food to the program - and someone else in the network picks it up and puts it to use. So far, the database has saved an estimated two tonnes of food. Experts agree programs like the interactive MEANS website, which stands for Matches Excess and Need for Stability, can close lapses in communication between pantries and chip away at the country s colossal problem with chronic waste. Americans squander $165 billion every year on food destined for landfills where the decomposition of organic matter emits 16 percent of the country s methane - a greenhouse gas that s 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Even people who donate to their local pantries are contributing, to some degree, to the problem. Emergency food centers have long been the last stop for whatever s lurking in the back of America s cupboards. And so, people donate an endless supply of near-expired creamed corn, beans and Honeybuns. The excess of product often does one of two things. It expires on the shelf and gets thrown out. Or it clutters the pantry so much that non-profits can t accept premium donations that could immediately service a community. But when you get 400 jars of peanut butter and you have two weeks to get rid of them and serve 100 people a month, total, and only distribute four times a month, that rapidly becomes a problem. Belding thought she might be onto something. In her mind, there was clear need for a network. And so, at the beginning of her freshman year, she arrived at a friend s house and got to talking with his 24-year-old brother, Grant Nelson. Nelson, now a third-year law student at George Washington University and program cofounder, had experience with building programs. So she asked him if he could help. He wasn t sure he wanted to. This struck me as a changing-people s-behavior problem, rather than providing a tool to fulfill a need, he said. I said, Phones exist. s exist. Twitter exists. Facebook exists. What could we possibly build that would be slicker for all of the food banks and food pantries to communicate with each other that isn t already solved by something else? In the end, he helped anyway. It took more than a year. A year of planning, researching and building program after program. Then in February, the website launched. Months passed. In May, Belding was sitting in class when she saw one of their nascent users had posted an item to the site. This was the moment, she realized, when the project would either succeed or fail. A sense of panic seized her when she saw someone was giving away assorted varieties of canned beans. They re like the offbrand Mountain Dew in the food world, Belding said. You ll take it only if you have no other option.... So we were all anxiously sitting by our computers hitting refresh, and I said, Please, someone take this. And then, it s gone. It just disappeared.... The beans had moved. We were kind of desperate, said Stephanie Shallah, an official with the District s So Others Might Eat who had posted the item. Beans come so often to me that I didn t think anyone would want them. So I said, I m going to just post it and see what happens. I said, I have nothing to lose. She said a Landover pantry servicing a large Hispanic population took the goods. Things then happened very quickly for MEANS. The organization now commands a staff of several programmers paid through grant money and even a few interns whom Belding concedes are older than she. The number of members on the site has grown from around 50 larger food banks in June to more than 200, opening up a network of thousands of smallershop pantries that work under the umbrella of those banks. But there s still a lot of work to do, Belding said. There are still 26 states that remain untapped. There s still the world. Belding said she had more calls to make. More connections to forge.
