6 EDITOR S NOTE There s an old, rueful saying: Youth is wasted on the young meaning that the wisdom of age comes when we no longer have the strength, resilience and time to act on it. Yet that s precisely what youth is for: a time for learning, making mistakes, exploring, testing ideologies and slowly amassing the moral awareness on which to base the rest of one s life. As we begin Youth Month in SA, it s gratifying to see that our own young people are by no means wasting their vigour on hollow pursuits: they ve found their voice, they re celebrating their African roots and they re flexing their political muscles. Campaigns like #FeesMustFall and the strident, young protesters demanding change in our government are evidence that idealism and enterprise are as strong in our children as they were in us. The young women interviewed in Beautiful & Powerful at any Age (p66) point out that while the Born Free generation have been spared the tyranny and injustice of apartheid, they face many problems of their own. Their grandparents and parents may envy them the freedoms they enjoy, but with those freedoms come a whole, new slew of challenges and responsibilities. Even more heartening is the realisation that SA s youngsters have fully as much compassion as conviction. As social activist Nozimanga Mlalazi remarks in Teens in Vogue (p51): We aren t content with apathetically accepting societal wrongs, which is why we re seeing so many young people dedicated to upliftment. She and many hundreds of thousands like her are heartening evidence that we re handing the baton to a generation who are admirably equipped to carry it. Self-portraitist Tony Gum, our cover feature (Artista, p24), is reinforcing that conviction. With her innovative art form, she s not only pushing creative boundaries, but challenging long-entrenched perceptions of young African women s identity in both the cultural and commercial spheres. She s being globally acclaimed as a bold, new spirit in the realm of converging art mediums. Another inclusion celebrating our youth in this issue is our annual Good Schools Report (p124), brought to you in association with Old Mutual, which explores the ways educational models need to change in SA and lists leading public and private schools around the country. We re excited to make this popular resource digital this year and we ll be telling you more about that in our next issue.
