Key Materials While colour is important, it is materials that hold the key to effectively exploring this trend. Designers are looking beyond visual aesthetics to get the attention of consumers, as multi-sensory drivers are progressively guiding spend. Instead of buying simply with our eyes, we re getting up-close to touch and feel products before making a purchase decision. Look out for elements that show design consideration of a frame s surface or that stack contrasting textures alongside each other; leather, rubberised finishes, laser-cut accents, superfine metals and tooled design trims are all coming back into focus, says Nicky Clement, Marketing Manager, Eyespace. In Demand Detailing And, as minimalistic eyewear grows in popularity, so texture becomes a useful tool to add intrigue without over complicating the overall aesthetic. Textured detailing and materials are popular for both male and female eyewear. The move towards more unisex styles will also have encouraged the use of genderless detailing. For both sexes, casual dressing is a very popular trend in 2017 and textures can often make the end design look more rustic and less glamorous, which fits in with this laid back styling, explains Rosemary Morton, Product Development Manager of International Eyewear. Technological Advances Textural flourishes on eyewear have been made possible by new technology, with digitally printed acetate, laser-printed metal and adding graphics to mirrored lenses all adding to the tactility of designs. Cellulose acetate is certainly the material that provides the most pleasant aesthetic and tactile results, also enabling the designer to reproduce three-dimensional graphics and effects, despite working on a twodimensional piece, explains Furlan of De Rigo. Ogi Eyewear s design team agrees: Pairing the right acetates with architecturally-inspired texture allows a frame to catch the light in a certain way. When done correctly, it takes on a new look that can transform anyone s appearance. Wooden effects are also popular, so much so that Louis Stone has dedicated an entire collection to them. The temple trim on Eyespace s Cocoa Mint model CM9039 is inspired by the braiding and gold-toned hardware of luxury handbags, referencing the leather trend with a high-gloss acetate eye front, cylindrical temple, a neat technical feat. Subtle engraving on the bridge of this style from Superdry, model Dakota, at Inspecs. Texture can be as subtle as the design as seen in this OGA Tryk model from Zuma which features different materials with a different touch. Camden model BF762 from Blackfin has a bas-relief pattern carved by photo engraving the titanium to produce a light yet solid woven effect, creating a play of symmetries enhanced by the polished finish.
4 20 FA SHION Ørgreen s Taurus model is inspired by the rare rock formations of outer space; curious lunar stones and strange surface patterns to be found on the moon. It features an intriguing blend of natural colours and uncanny special effects. Titanium Versatility Metal too can deliver beautiful textural finishes. Many titanium frames create a texture by the clever use of interwoven wires which from a distance gives a very intricate texture. Recently there has been a considerable rise in the number of matt frames over the past few seasons with high consumer demand, says Louise Brunton, General Manager, Charmant UK. Emily Andrews, Product Director, Eyespace agrees: Metal eyewear should also not be overlooked; the continuing trend of 90s nostalgia has seen a re-emergence of round eye metal frames. For an updated twist, an urban, stone wash finish can be applied for an up-to the-minute look that will appeal to style conscious consumers. Flexible Options In terms of location for textural flourishes, it s very much a case of an open design brief. Texture as a medium is extremely flexible, it can be used in concentrated areas or all over the frame depending on the overall desired effect. Modern day advances have meant that texture has no boundaries and can be added to frame design in many applications including lazer etching, acid effects, pressed patterns, paint finishes and 3D printing. The options really are endless, explains Morton of International Eyewear. Stand Out Appeal Certainly texture looks set to remain a feature on many frames in the coming seasons. We all like to have something a little different and as eyewear trends develop, consumers like to have accessories that stand out from the crowd. Texturing eyewear is a subtle way of decoration that is highly appealing and as more innovative developments appear on the market the trend will continue to grow, says Brunton of Charmant UK. Gaba of Louis Stone agrees: It was predicted on the catwalks late last year and I think it will be quite the trend for years to come, she says. u Model Z391 from Orange Eyewear, channels a trend for nature inspired texture and is woodtouch. Lyle & Scott model Alloa 3 from Dunelm Optical combines a metal front with sides that feature a raw wood effect acetate and metal combination. The raised 3D eagle logo adds further texture to the sides.

Episode 236 C2 from International Eyewear reveals that texture can be added to metal frames, as, seen here, with this distressed finish. Model Arpege from Henry Jullien is a men s model distinguished by its textured temple in carbon or glass fibre and rubber. Metropolitan model 8039 from OWP combines surfaces that are part fine matt, part sheen with a delicately ridged metal top front bar.

This in turn has had a direct effect on eyewear design with a plethora of pinks making their mark, predominantly in acetate. Transparent pinks are also a big micro trend, especially in barely there, flesh tones. In bold contrast, punchy fuchsia pink is strong moving forward into Autumn, occasionally veering close to purple. There are even some fluorescent pinks out there that play with 80's references and are resolutely young and tun. Despite reinventing itself as an altogether sophisticated option, it still takes a brave man to opt for pink eyewear. Indeed the gender divide couldn't be clearer on this one; this is a trend for women.
