Spurred on by all the talk of instant shrinkage, I did try Banting but the truth is, it made me miserable, which in turn made life pretty miserable for those around me too.

Spurred on by all the talk of instant shrinkage, I did try Banting but the truth is, it made me miserable, which in turn made life pretty miserable for those around me too. I didn t miss the undisguised sweet stuff like biscuits and sweeties, but, honestly, what can be more delicious on a cold winter morning than a bowl of steaming oats? Or a crusty whole-wheat roll with soup? Or crisps with your sundowner glass of wine? I could go on and on. I wouldn t call myself anti-banting (I mean, look at all those inspiring stories), I m just anti-banting for me. Which is why I was so excited when the US Good Housekeeping s dietitian, Jaclyn London, came up with the amazing SuperCarb Diet. This diet acknowledges that while some carbs are bad, the right carbs can be good for you, especially if you eat them at the right time of day. Think sweet potatoes, butternut, lentils, fruit and quinoa. On page 112 you ll find a whole lot of carb-smart recipes and a smart eating plan that promises slow, steady weight loss of about 1kg a week. The next day I gave the postman a bottle of chilled juice. Another friendly smile and I started feeling that this was becoming addictive. On Friday I had my car serviced and dropped off scones for the mechanics tea break. What a joy it was to see their faces light up with smiles.
