It s a revolutionary time for online retail buying & bookings, now that there are so many more touch points for people to see, research and click. With the increasing number of e-devices, consumers move from phone to tablet to laptop and back again a habit contagiously growing in the retail world. e-tailers have created more meaningful ways for people to have quick access to the e-marketplace they need. Consumers have embraced the choice and convenience of shopping online, spending more than they would on actual retail shopping. The EU launched an Action Plan in 2003 to stop illegal logging. This Action Plan known as the EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan aims at combating the problem of illegal logging of wood. EU adopted a new EU Timber Regulation to combat trade in illegally harvested timber. This is one of a number of actions under the 2003 EU Action Plan on Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT), which came into force on 2 December 2010, as of 3 March 2013, making it illegal to place illegally harvested timber and timber products on the EU market. In order to counter the provisions of EUTR and other such legislations, the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) launched ''VRIKSH"- the due diligence system with a benchmarking initiative and issue certification to the member exporters. As part of this, a specific committee has been set up by the Council which includes member exporters, foresters, researchers, certification bodies as well as related institutions to device a mechanism to create a due diligence system for procurement of wood from the legal sources. The key objective of the mechanism is to promote environmentally responsible production, consumption and trade in wooden handicrafts products in India and overseas. VRIKSH-Indian Timber Legality Assessment and Verification Program is a certification process for verification of factories (operating under the umbrella of EPCH) for conformance to Indian timber legality requirements as well as the "due diligence" requirements as posited by the various international timber regulations, as well as those required by various international buyers to the varying degree of compliance by the members. Further EPCH plans to accelerate advocacy, raise awareness and build capacity of the noncompliant members to adopt VRIKSH. The standards have been developed by EPCH in consultation with stakeholders and after Pilot Testing were approved by the Technical Committee specifically formed to oversee the scheme. These standards have been designed to allow companies to avoid trading in illegally harvested wood. Compliance with the standard allow companies to demonstrate that they are implementing best efforts to avoid trade in illegally harvested timber, in support of the international Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) program, the European union Timber Regulations (EUTR), the US Lacey Act amendment 2008, The Illegal logging Prohibition act 2012 and other such global timber legality verification programs. Among E-commerce groups, ebay.in; flipkart.com;bedbathmore.com; fabfurnish.com; pepperfry.com; and Urban Ladder Home Decor have already registered to visit and source. To facilitate sourcing by domestic buyers, EPCH has made special arrangements amongst exhibiting companies through the SR coding/ marking, meant to indicate that the companies are interested in Retail Business - intended to save time of domestic buyers for reaching out to the correct stand/companies. Domestic volume trade buyers also have SR displayed on their badge. India s booming retail market has gathered a new momentum and is offering extensive opportunities for repositioning of Indian producers of lifestyle products to take centre stage. According to India Brand Equity Foundation, The Indian retail industry Opportunities for E-Ventures & Retail Alliances EPCH has made arrangements for pre-registered retail buyers to visit the Fair with or without guided assistance and meet suppliers as per their requirements. These visitors would be provided access to a special lounge set up for retail buyers; shuttle service, parking/valet service. has presently emerged as one of the most dynamic and fast paced industries as several players have started to enter the market. It accounts for over 10 per cent of the country s gross domestic product (GDP) and around eight per cent of the employment in India. The country is today the fifth largest global destination in the world for retail. India s retail market is expected to double to US$ 1 trillion by 2020 from US$ 600 billion in 2015 driven by income growth, urbanisation and attitudinal shifts, highlighted the Boston Consulting Group and Retailers Association of India s report titled, Retail 2020: Retrospect, Reinvent, Rewrite that further states that while the overall retail market will grow at 12% per annum, modern trade will grow twice as fast at 20% per annum, and traditional at 10%. India is expected to become the world s fastest growing e-commerce market on the back of robust investment activity in the sector and the rapid increase in internet users. It is expected that India s e-commerce market will grow to over US$ 100 billion by IHGF Delhi Fair-Autumn 2015 offers an excellent opportunity for Indian retail brands that strive to step-up their offer for top-end consumers, besides the global home & lifestyle retail brands/chains which have a growing interest in India-both for sourcing as well as retailing. Growing opportunities in home furnishings and lifestyle market inspire SR coding at IHGF With the rise in purchasing power, and the growth of retail, the lifestyle of Indians is also transforming year after year. The emerging middle class with multiple earning members in each family is now eager to spend on lifestyle, home décor and other related products. From the young working couples to middle class households in the hinterlands, people are getting increasingly attracted to value added, stylish and high end home fashion products. Those in urban areas are taking pride in picking the right combination of home décor, furnishings and textiles to impart their own personality to their homes and are also getting increasingly generous with their gift spending. As a result, there is a healthy and steady growth in the Indian markets for home décor and housewares (25-30% per annum). The domestic home textiles and furnishings market is growing at around 40%. Save your time! Here for Domestic Retail Sourcing? Exhibitors s stalls interested in retail have the SR symbol. Domestic volume trade buyers also have this displayed on their badge.1248 exhibitors at the show are also open to domestic retail. India s burgeoning E-retail sector contributes as well With the growth in the demand for home décor, furnishings and other home improvement products, e-retailing is turning out to be a lucrative channel for increasing sales for manufacturers. The e-retailers are also realizing that there is a higher margin in home products than other product categories and are hence putting more efforts to push sales for this category. Internationally, consumers of home products increasingly prefer to shop online. In India, with 3g reaching to over 80% of Indian masses, online shopping is bound to increase as the more time people spend online, the more probable it is that they will shop. Over the next 5 years, overall retail is expected to grow by 12-15%, organized retail by 25-30% and e-retail by 60%. By the year 2020, estimated size of total e-commerce business in India is likely to reach USD 70 million, clearly indicating a bright future for e-retailers. Some e-commerce websites have busted popular myths about e-retailing which were far from the reality. The belief that online buying is restricted to educated Indians in urban areas looking for discounts stands proven wrong, as many e-tailers derive 60% of sales from non-discounted products. Another myth that was busted was that online buyers are mainly from the metros as the top ten cities contributed 60% out of which 35% came from metros. The people in metros buy online for the convenience but the buyers from tier 2-3 cities buy due to the lack of availability in brick and mortar shops in their vicinity, keeping these figures in mind, it is easy to conclude that tier 2-3 cities will soon become loyal customers for e-retailers. It is also easier to study the consumer behavior online and market products accordingly due to the availability of huge amounts of data. E-retailing of home products also allows for concept selling as it is easier to take picture of a room from different angles and show it to the buyers online than setting up a mock room in a brick and mortar store.
