Precious Gemstone Ruby Ruby is a pink to blood-red colored gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). The red color is caused mainly by the presence of the element chromium. The crystal system is Trigonal. Its name comes from ruber, Latin for red. Other variety of gemquality corundum is called sapphire. Ruby is considered as one of the four precious stones, together with sapphire, emerald, and diamond. Rubies have hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale. This gemstone is the most stable form of Aluminum Oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) in which a small fraction of the aluminium 3 + ions are replaced by chromium 3 + ions to give it red color. All natural rubies have impurities and inclusions of rutile needles known as silk. Gemologists use these inclusions found in natural rubies to distinguish them from synthetics, simulants, or substitutes. Usually the rough stone is heated before cutting. Almost all rubies today are treated in some form, with heat treatment being the most common practice. However, rubies that are completely untreated but still of excellent quality command a large premium. Some rubies show a three-point or six-point asterism or star. These rubies are cut into cabochons to display the effect properly. Asterisms are best visible with a single-light source, and move across the stone as the light 8 moves or the stone is rotated. Such effects occur when light is reflected off the silk in a certain way. This is one example where inclusions increase the value of a gemstone. Furthermore, rubies can show color changes though this occurs very rarely as well as chatoyancy or the cat s eye effect is also seen in some of the rubies. Natural occurrence: The Mogok Valley in Upper Myanmar (Burma) was for centuries the world s main source for rubies. The ruby deposits in Pakistan occur in metamorphosed re-crystallized limestone marble in Northern Pakistan in the Hunza Valley, Gilgit, Kashmir and Hazara. Major depoits of Ruby occur in a narrow belt that may be traced from Hunza Valley to the Ishkoman Valley over distance of about 150 Km. Presently Rubies are being mined at various places all along this built. Mining activities are also being carried out in Neelam Valley AJK. Deposits of Ruby also occur in Tajikistan, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Madagascar, Vietnam, Nepal and Afghanistan. Factors affecting value: Like diamonds rubies are graded using criteria that have become known as the four Cs, namely color, cut, clarity and carat (weight) together with geographic origin. Color: In the evaluation of colored gemstones, color is the single most important factor. Color divides into three components; hue, saturation and tone. Hue refers to color as we normally use the term. In ruby the primary hue must be red. The brightest and most valuable red called pigeon blood-red, commands a large premium over other rubies of similar quality. All other hues of the gem species corundum are called sapphire. Ruby may exhibit a range of secondary hues. Orange, purple, violet and pink are possible. After color follows clarity: similar to diamonds, a clear stone will command a premium. Cut and Carat (weight) are also important factor in determining the price. Treatments and enhancements: Improving the quality of gemstones by treating them is a common practice. Some treatments are used in almost all cases and are therefore considered acceptable. Similarly rubies are produced in laboratories as well; such rubies have same chemical composition, physical and optical properties as of natural rubies. Rubies produced in the laboratory are called synthetic rubies, which are produced since You can write to us at marketing@pgjdc.org For your convenience, all the previous issues of the newsletter have been uploaded on our website at: INFORMATION Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company A subsidiary of Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation, formed under Section 42 of the Companies Ordinance Ministry of Industries & Production, Government of Pakistan M-3 Mezzanine Floor, Regent Plaza Hotel & Convention Centre, Main Shahrah-e-Faisal, Karachi info@pgjdc.org facebook.com/gjpakistan; twitter.com/gjpakistan January - July Gems & Jewellery
