May program will be colored pencil and markers with Becky Kinlock. Becky is a new member and long time art and science teacher. This is your chance to find out how colored pencils work and to save some old works of art. Bring colored pencil, markers, color or white paper, old drawings. 4 April 2014 Page 4 Art Show and Art Shows Chair: Sharon Clawson RESULTS FROM THE LAURITZEN GARDENS ART SHOW WILL APPEAR IN THE JUNE NEWSLETTER Omaha Artists, Inc. Summer Art Show at Hospice House 7415 Cedar St., Omaha Dates of Show: July 9 - August 24, 2014 Registration: July 8, 11-3 p.m. Take Down: August 25, 11-3 p.m. Only one piece will be allowed, since this is a small space. Size for this show will be limited to 16" x 20" on outside edges of the frame. 3-d pieces will be accepted. The show will not be judged, but we will have a "People's Choice" Award for the top 2 or 3 favorites, with ballots for anyone to fill out who comes to see the show. Prizes will be gift certificates. There is no entry fee, and you can sell your artwork. No theme, but just make the art "colorful". You can enter art pieces that have been entered in shows before this. We will still adhere to the rule of no saw-tooth hangers, and only clean mats and frames with no scratches, please. A reminder will go out a few weeks before the show this summer NEXT SHOW AT HOT SHOPS ART CENTER IS NEXT NOVEMBER. The theme for next year's Hot Shops Art Show: "Ancestral Connections". You can interpret this in whatever way you would like. My thoughts on how to interpret this theme is that the art could reflect something in my own ancestry, such as something depicted from the countries of my relative's origin, the type of work one of my ancestor's did, a memory of one of my parents or grandparents or relatives, or go way back to beyond what you know of your own ancestry, and do an ancient interpretation of how and where life originated. Or it would not have to be about your own ancestry, but a connection you have to something from the past, something old, something primeval, etc. Hope that helps. But you can come up with your own interpretation - I'm just giving some examples. No write-ups this time explaining your work, so let your imagination fly, and have fun with the theme! 5 April 2014 Page 5 Art Bridge Chair Carol Coppi 402- We are wrapping up our season with our ESL students (we go by the OPS calendar year) and are happy to report that the new location at Augustana Lutheran Church has allowed us to serve a greater number of students. Chooty and Co. located at 2101 S. 35th St. We have many boxes of scrap fabric we would love to donate for art projects. Please forward this message to your crafty friends. Each box contains a wide variety of sizes and fabrics. Here are a few details of what you will find in each box, as they are already taped and ready to go. Each 25lbs and larger. Call if you have any questions or would like to see a box of scraps before deciding. Most pieces are 5 x8 or smaller. There will occasionally be larger pieces. Some strips are around 2 x15. Fabric ranges from 100% cotton to 100% polyester (and everything in between). Solids and pattern fabrics, and the salvage edges are in the boxes. He received his BFA from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and his MFA at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities. He has Exhibited nationally and internationally and his work can be found in many collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. His works have been featured in many publications including Sculpture Magazine, New American Paintings, and HGTV Magazine. Vargas has Received many awards including the 2012 Omaha Entertainment and Arts Award for Best Visual Artists.
