This year s Small Stuff attracted 50 exquisite entries in a wide variety of media. Thanks to all who entered and special thanks to our judge: artist, teacher and Student Show Co-Chair, Kyung Kim. See this issue for an entry form for May s Pets I Have Loved show, and a schedule of upcoming shows. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Our web diva Cathi Chase was accepted as an entrant at the Call to Arts! Expo, Conference and Festival on April 19th at Cal State Northridge, where she showed three of her digital artworks. Cathi s beautiful, Fleur de Soleil, at right, won a 1 st Place in the Aesthetics and Harmony division. Veronica Moody has her one-man show, From Miniatures to Murals, on display at two locations in Pasadena s Old Town: Equator Coffee House at 22 Mills Place, and the Ciao Restaurant next door. 2 WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!! Linda Schroeder LA Foster Marlene Craig Charles Miltonberger SECOND SATURDAY ARTWALK FEATURED ARTISTS continues to attract visitors to Gallery SoHo. During April, Linda Hauser demonstrated her fine oil paintings to an enthusiastic 2 nd Saturday crowd. The May program will feature PVAA s treasurer and colored pencil specialist, Warren Joe Ingalls. In addition, our Gallery Directors, Melanie Phillips and Barbara Bernath will be demonstrating watercolor-with-pastel and watercolor. In June, Marci Stewart will share her Chinese brush painting. Marci tells more about her art and her inspirations on page 3. President s Message PVAA Members and Friends, As artists, I believe we are gifted with the ability to feel more deeply because we see more clearly the detail around us. Be thankful for that clarity, and lean on it through the adversities in life. Over the past 6 months, I have lost a significant number of family members and friends. The other night, I was on the phone with an artist friend who had recently lost her father. She put things in perspective, commenting that the number of deaths I had seen were actually in direct proportion to the number of people I know. She reminded me how rich my life is in that area. In reflection, the number of friends I have multiplied as a direct result of my involvement in the arts community. On a recent trip to New York, I visited galleries in Chelsea, SoHo, and Greenwich Village. Only in town for a couple of days, I didn't allow the torrential wind-driven rains to break my stride. Most of the galleries I visited are not at street level (like Gallery SoHo). One of the galleries merely had laser-printed sign on plain white paper posted on a door at street level. I walked through the door onto a stairwell landing, followed other laser-printed signs and went downstairs to get a key. Then I passed through a series of locked doors that lead past more stairwells (not unlike our restroom journey). I was greeted by a freight elevator with another laser-printed sign of instructions to run the elevator. When I got out, I discovered that I was on the wrong floor for the gallery I had intended to find. But the stop on the wrong floor let me off smack dab in the middle of another gallery. This unexpected destination was a gallery filled with diverse artworks created by talented local artists (again, like Gallery SoHo). Savor the journey as much as the final destination. And don't fear the risk involved in taking a wrong turn. You might just stumble upon something better than you expected! - Darlyn Susan Yee Sessions at SoHo: Remember to sign up for May s 3 rd Friday program. On the 16 th, Willa Sturpath of the Maimeri Paint Company, will demonstrate this fine line of Italian paints (oils, acrylic and watercolor), and will provide free samples. 3 GALLERY ARTISTS PLEASE REMEMBER MAY IS CHANGEOUT MONTH!!! Gallery SoHo is doing their Spring Cleaning. Be sure to bring your artwork to the Gallery for the Board Meeting on May 3 (or before) to change at least 50% of the items in your exhibit. June s Artist of the Month: Marci Stewart: Marci has pursued several careers -- accountant, kindergarten teacher, family therapist and many avocations, including being an avid gardener, seamstress, lover of nature, struggling writer and artist. As long as Marci can remember, the artist within has expressed herself. Starting with awards won in high school, she started in 1982 to study Chinese brush painting with gifted artist Ning Yeh. Two years later, she was among 40 artists selected to exhibit in Taipei with American Artists of Chinese Brush Painting. In 1989, she visited China with the same group. As many artists do, Marci promised herself that one day, she would give herself more time for her creative pursuits. In 1992, she cut back on her therapy practice, to realize this goal. With the recognition she received for her work, she realized she needed a more permanent place to exhibit. She became an exhibiting artist with PVAA in Shortly thereafter, Marci met Jack Stewart, through a mutual friend who suggested that Marci could hone her writing talents by assisting Jack with PVAA publicity. From their original blind date in June of 1998, a romance that untied two kindred spirits bloomed. In January of 1999, to the accompaniment of bagpipes, flute, Celtic harp, washboard, jazz band and bubbles, they were married. Marci and Jack are currently expressing their mutual passion for art by remodeling their beautiful, craftsman-style home, their "place of dreams." ARTISTIC INSPIRATIONS: PVAA MEMBERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Did you know that, in addition to volunteering their time with PVAA to share their love of art with the community, many of our artists are involved activities that make a positive difference in their communities? Read on, and be inspired. Art Therapy. As noted last month, Barbara Keith, our former editor, wasted no time making a difference in her new home in Helena, MT. Barbara, a childhood polio victim, helps others who were affected by this disease to overcome their handicaps and realize their potential through art. Although miles away, Barbara still keeps in touch with PVAA and shares our commitment to bringing a love of the arts to others. Barbara s Orange Lily is shown at right. Jolly Jailbirds: Past President Linda Hauser and Student Show Co-Chair Elizabeth Sides (of Elizabeth s Art Studio in Claremont) were Jailbirds for a Day on April 30 to raise funds for neuromuscular disease research at The Muscular Dystrophy Association annual Lockup. The MDA Police escorted them to the jailhouse at the Coppacabana Restaurant in Pomona. Linda and Bitsy have been 3

collecting bail money (donations to MDA) to win their release. But first, they mingled with other jailbirds, and distributed information about PVAA, the Arts Colony and Elizabeth s Art Studio.

While doing their time, they enjoyed the Copacabana s jailhouse grub. Finally, the MDA Judge decided to let them off for good behavior after they posted their bail. The MDA s SE Los Angeles Chapter provides clinics at Rancho Los Amigos and UCLA Medical Center for people of all ages with neuromuscular diseases, offering assistance to purchase medical equipment, and a special camp for Jerry s Kids. Be sure to mention PVAA and Elizabeth s Art Studio with your contribution. Healing Power of Art. Many of SoHo s not-so-old-timers remember recent members Larry and Carol Moyer. We missed their beautiful art when they left the gallery to make a new home in the high desert community of Yucca Valley. Shortly after their move, Larry had a stroke and was unable to use his right hand his painting hand! You cannot keep an artist down. Larry has learned to paint left-handed. His new work is even more wonderful that his earlier pairings. Larry and carol now have a gallery in their new hometown, The Blue Corn Gallery, Twentynine Palms Highway, Yucca Valley, Ca and their new phone is (760) They both look forward to cross-pollination between the Pomona Arts Colony and the Yucca Valley Arts Colony. Timeless Talent. Ann Stone will exhibit two of her works at Ageless Expressions, a celebration of older artists, sponsored by the City of Claremont on Saturday, May 17, 10 AM to 1 PM. Highlights of the day also Include art demonstrations, music, poetry reading, and dance performances. For additional information, contact the Joselyn Senior Center at (909) ART EXHIBITION: BETTY HOOK AND STUDENTS Don t Forget! This month, PVAA will feature our artistic doyenne, Betty Hook, at the Spring Art Exhibition in the Claremont Progress Space (across the hall from PVAA s Gallery SoHo) in Pomona s Art Colony. Honoring the example of this accomplished artist, who is well known for sharing her knowledge through teaching, Betty s exhibition will feature work by her students. This free exhibition is open to the public from May 10 th (2 nd Saturday) through Sunday, May 25 th during regular gallery hours (Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 11 A.M. 10 P.M. on 2 nd Saturday). Claremont Progress is located at 300 South Thomas Street, Pomona.. Most of the artwork will be available for sale.

5 Betty was recently awarded a Lifetime membership after decades of service to PVAA. She has been featured as one of America s Top 100 Artists in Southwest Art Magazine, and her work hangs in private collections throughout the world. Betty has won numerous awards for portraits of domestic and wild animals (see above), florals, landscapes, seascapes and still life paintings. WORKSHOPS Collage Workshop with Mary Montelongo, Friday-Saturday, June 13-14, 10 AM to 2 PM. Fee: $40. In the comfortable surroundings of her own studio, Mary will teach you how to develop your own unique vision and to express that vision into collage. Demonstrations will include faux paper, image lifts, rubbings and other techniques. Mary will facilitate discussions on the history of collage, intuitive expression, recapturing the "child within you" and more.
