4 Variation of Form Progress Space Gallery PVAA Annual Student Show Sponsored by PVAA and area merchants, this year s show is again open to all are Middle and High School students, 7th - 12th grades. Work may be submitted by teachers or students. Take-in is Saturday March 1 from 12-4 pm. Teachers will be able to obtain an awards list on Thursday March 6 and Friday March 7 between 11 and 4. Awards reception is Saturday, March 8 from 6-10 pm during the Second Saturday Art Walk. Winning art work will be displayed at various local business venues and art galleries following the shows run during the month of March. Artwork must be picked up on Saturday March 29 and Sunday March 30 between 12 and 4.. From a Dot To a Line To a Form... The Progress Space Gallery has evolved into great place where new innovative and original art can be seen. The new show Variations of Form presented by the Shameless Self Promoters (SSP), running in January and February includes displays of various styles of art and media. SSP coordinator Lucien van Oosten gathered together artists who are uprising talents and established veterans and asked them to display their own personal interpretation of Variation of Form. Each artist s vision evolved and grew until they each had created a body of artwork that was diverse and innovative. Their visions merged and diverged and the result is art that explores a wide range of subjects including the human form, forms of revolution, and the forms of nature. The diverse and eclectic nature of the show guarantees that everyone will find a piece that enthralls and inspires them. The Variation of Form show runs Thursday to Sunday through February 24, from 11am to 4pm with an artist reception scheduled for the second Saturday on February 9 from 6-10 pm. Stop by the Progress Space Gallery and enjoy the show New this year, digital and photography categories. Artisan s Christmas Festival The reception was a colorful festive event, decked out with red poinsettias. The artisans generously provided the homemade goodies. Music was performed by Paul Wilkens and his friend. Paul s instrument, a Theremin, was very unusual (it was designed by a Russian physicist.) The crisp cool weather added to the spirit of the season. Thank you all for supporting PVAA s Artisan Christmas Festival. It s exciting to visit with our regular patrons and meet many more. Thanks to each of the artisans who helped make this year s show a success. Happy New Year! 5 Seller Beware! I received this in from AnnieLaurie Burke, a long time PVAA member. It was sent to her by a friend: It is sad to find that, if your work is displayed online, there are scammers who will try to steal both your art and your money (via the cartage company payment scheme). The tip-off is that they are too lazy to write an original communication about your work. They use the same , including the exact grammatical and punctuation errors, and same current and new move addresses, each time. The thing that made me most suspicious of the buyer who contacted me, who identified herself as Joy Brown, was the utter lack of any reference in her communications to the content or medium of my specific artwork. I sent her information on the creation of the pieces, the awards they had received, and similar information that always results in a lively dialogue with a legitimate art buyer. Since I work in an unusual medium, her lack of reference to the work itself seemed strange. I had also suggested in my initial reply to her that we conduct the transaction by PayPal. Her reply didn t even reference that suggestion. So, beware if communications with a potential buyer seem too dry and non-specific. This is the I received describing the set-up that would result in an artist turning over both her work and her money for the shipping payment to the scammer or accomplice: Subject: payment sent Hope this message finds you well. Thanks so much for your concern and patient regarding the whole transaction. It has been a very difficult time with a lot of things on the plate... Anyway, I will like to inform you that the payment for the artwork has been sent to you by my husband via Royal mail from London and he was advised that you will receive the payment in THREE TO FIVE working days. He told me that he included the shipping fee to the payment he sent to you. Try and be on the look out for the payment. Therefore, the favour I will like you to do for me is to give the shipping fees to the Movers after you might have remove your asking price for the creative artworks when they come for the pickup. I have informed the movers and they promise to get in touch with you later in the week ahead. I will call you later today for more details. Advise on the best time to call. 5 Glass vs. Acrylic? Neither is perfect. Both have advantages and disadvantages when framing. More and more shows and galleries are making it a requirement you use acrylic instead of glass. Consider the following list of pro s and con s when making your decision what to use. Where will the picture frame be displayed How large will the frame be How much will it be moved Who will clean it Is the artwork replaceable Will the picture frame be shipped Acrylic Pro s Very lightweight Easy to transport and often used on large picture frames since the weight of glass can become an issue. Shatter resistant Ideal for shipping, especially larger picture frames. Many galleries insist on Acrylic for liability reasons. Many museums use Acrylic because broken glass can permanently destroy rare artwork. Optically pure Acrylic is more optically pure than glass unless you get the more expensive Museum glass. Acrylic Con s Expense There are many different quality levels of glass and acrylic. In general standard Acrylic typically cost considerably more than standard glass. Lack of scratch resistance Except for more expensive abrasion resistant versions of acrylic, it is more sensitive to scratching and requires special care. Only soft cloths should be used to clean it. Paper towels are essentially ground up wood pulp and can damage acrylic. This can be a disadvantage if you are reselling framed artwork since you will need to remind your customer to be careful when cleaning it. Static Charge Acrylic is more susceptible to higher levels of static charge than glass. For this reason it should generally not be used to frame chalk pastels. The static charge can be nuisance during frame assembly since it will attract dust into the frame. Protective paper/film hassle Due to Acrylic s lack of scratch resistance, it is sold with a protective film or paper coating. This must be removed during the final frame assembly. The film is easy to remove but provides little protection resulting in increased scratching during processing and handing. Paper provides very good protection but is much more difficult to remove. Comments? Suggestions? Have a favorite source for acrylic? We d love to hear your ideas and opinions, and will publish those along with any tips or hints you care to share. Send to laura@pvaa.net or to my postal address on the bottom of page 6.

6 Lucien s Farewell Message My goals from the time I was asked to be president to this year s end were: 1. To improve Progress Space Gallery, make it a more inviting place to hang and show artwork. 2. To rent Progress Gallery so that an art show would be displaying every month of the year. 3. To work on new ideas and to bring PVAA out of the red and into the black. 4. To work at getting more member involvement. 5. To improve our Monthly Show attendance and themes 6. To meet PVAA s mission statement Together during the past year and 9 months, we have achieved many impressive accomplishments including gallery updates, improved financial stability, and increased advertising. The Progress Space Gallery upgrades have made it more appealing and attractive. We have received a lot of positive feedback about the addition of the grid work, which has made it much easier to hang shows. The lighting improvements have also been well received and I would like to thank all the members who made this possible with their donations of time, effort, and money. This year I am also proud to report that we are in the black even with the considerable expenditures to both upgrade and promote the gallery. It is my hope that the success we created this year will continue into the future. I would like to end my message by thanking the dedicated and committed individuals who helped me this year. Each one of you was an important part of our success and without the help of Linda Hauser, Ron Anderson, Jack Geddes, Greg Reed, Jan Wright, Joe Ingalls, Bob Marshall, Carolyn Cunningham, Bess Reide, Laura Mallory, Mary Montelongo, Jackie Bell, both Nancy s, Joan, Mia, Sindi, Debra and so many more that there is not enough room here to mention them all. The credit for our success goes to all of you as I would not have been able to meet my personal goals for PVAA and the galleries without all of your help and support. I would like to leave you all with a few thoughts for the upcoming year. Never be afraid to make changes... The team that makes the most mistakes will probably win. The doer makes mistakes, and I want doers on my team, players who make things happen. -John Wooden If at first you don t succeed - try, try again. Don t think of it as failure. Think of it as time-released success. -Robert Orben That is all for now, I hope you will continue to support the new board with the same open mindedness you used while supporting me. Cheers! Lucien van Oosten If you would like to respond to or submit any articles, offer your opinions or corrections, inform us of your achievements, or tell us what s happening in your neck of the woods, please do. You can submit through either laura@pvaa.net, US mail: Laura Mallory, 7008 Wheeler Ave., La Verne, CA 91750, or by phone: A Good artist has less time than ideas. 6
