Box 1013, Burbank CA Encouraging creativity in visual arts and serving the community since President s Message Dear BAA Members and friends, I hope everyone is well and had a nice Thanksgiving. I feel like everyone I know has been sick lately (and a lot of our members missed the last meeting). I guess it is the season, but eat your veggies and an apple a day, and stay well! First off, we d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Catalina Osorio for her service as our Hospitality Chair for the last decade! Catalina got involved with BAA after her son, Gustavo, received one of our student scholarships in Catalina has worked quietly behind the scenes making sure that there's food and drink at our events and that it all looks nice and gets cleaned up. We are so appreciative of all that she has done for the Burbank Art Association. Jenny Cirrincione and April Cowgur have stepped up to be Hospitality Cochairs and were voted in at our last meeting. Last month, we had a great presentation by Mark Gleason on sculpting. He also donated a beautiful sculpted piece mounted on reclaimed wood for our monthly meeting raffle. Thank you, Mark! Several of our members had a fun night at Holiday in the Park on Magnolia with quite the array of artwork, jewelry, and gift items for sale. The next event is a Board Show at the Geo Gallery titled Heaven and Earth. Join us for a reception on Friday, December 1 st from 6-8 pm. After that a few of our artists are participating in a weekend show at IMX Auto Group (811 N. Victory Blvd.) December 7-10 with the reception on Friday, December 8 th, 7:30 to 11 pm. Everyone is invited! Earlier on December 8 th, I will be hosting a free kids activity at 4:30 pm as part of the grand opening celebration of a new art studio, CR8space, at Burbank Blvd., North Hollywood (near Mucho Mas restaurant). Please stop by between 4 and 10 pm to see this great new spot. They will be offering open studio time, as well as classes and workshops for children and adults! Unfortunately, I won t be joining you at our White Elephant Holiday Party on December 20 th at Coral Café. My family will be heading out to Tennessee that day to celebrate my father-in-law's 80th birthday, as well as Christmas in the Great Smoky Mountains, and then venturing back on a cross-country drive back to California - something we've always wanted to do with our now 16- and 20-year-old daughters! If anyone has any suggestions for things we should see (or free places we can stay ), let me know! (We ll be taking the southern route.) Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and/or whatever you celebrate! See you in the new year! 2 BAA Holiday Party Time! Join us Wednesday, December 20 th, 7-9 pm at the Coral Café, located at 3321 W. Burbank Blvd. between Lima & California! Attendees can order off the extensive menu and will be responsible for their individual checks. Because of space, we are limited to one guest per member this year. If you wish to participate in our always-fun White Elephant exchange, please bring one wrapped gift (or re-gift!) per person. Gifts should be around $5. Hope to see you there! Art Donation Drive for Charity Did you know that 50% of families moving out of transitional homeless shelters and into their first home without furniture end up back on the street? With furniture, that statistic drops to 1%! With that in mind, we are having an artwork donation drive this month benefitting Pen + Napkin (penandnapkin.org). This local charity furnishes and decorates homes for families transitioning out of homelessness into their first real home. Having art on the walls is very meaningful in helping families feel ownership in their new homes. Please bring any ready-to-hang wall art that you d like to donate to the Holiday party. Tax receipts will be available. All artwork must be family friendly and no nudity, appropriate for home décor, and ready to hang. (Sorry, no sculpture or fragile mixed-media at this time.) Artwork for kids rooms also needed! If you have any questions, or wish to create something specific for this and are looking for ideas, feel free to contact Wendy Wallace (wendy@wendy-wallace.com ). Programs...Teresa Green, Programs Chair Our November program featured Mark Gleason s relief sculptural work. He works with clay, hydrostone (cement), and wood materials to create emotional and celestially themed sculptures, as well as historical figures. He discussed various clays, woods, molds and adhesive materials he uses, what inspires him, how he accents his pieces to bring out the details, and he answered questions about his technique. Mark offered one of his pieces for a raffle which was won by a guest who came with two of our members.

3 geo gallery exhibits ~ Helena Bowman, Exhibits Chair Jennifer Turnbull just finished her Solo Show at the Geo. I hope you all had a chance to see it! Next up at the Geo Gallery ~ On view now at the Geo Gallery is the BAA Board Show, Heaven & Earth, which will run through December 28 th. Reception is on Friday, December 1st, 6-8 pm. Come join us for a small festive celebration! The Geo Gallery will open the New Year with new members Reggie Grether & Dani Harrold showing their work until January 20. Watch for upcoming details in the Newsletter and on the BAA website.

4 BAA Fall Show ~ 2017 Our Fall Show at the Creative Art center was fantastic! The art displayed shows what a varied group of artists we have. The exhibit included paintings, photographs, ceramics, textile art and glass work. The Reception was a great success. We had a huge crowd with lots of new faces from the public, thanks to Virginia inviting the newspaper to interview our president, Jamie Butterworth. Great interview, Jamie! Congratulations to all of the Fall Show winners and thank you to everyone who helped out, we couldn t have done it without you! 5 Outside Exhibits ~ Delta Mishler and Wendy Wallace, Co-Chairs In November, several of our members had fun showing their wares at the Magnolia Park Holiday in the Park event! We had booths set up in the Blast from the Past parking lot, selling paintings, handmade jewelry, hand-painted china, and more. This was a very well attended event, with over 22,000 people filling Magnolia Blvd.! Thank you to everyone who came out to support us. Wendy Wallace is working on potential exhibit opportunities for our members at the Burbank Mall in some of their unused storefronts, perhaps as early as this month. The mall has also expressed interest in having some murals created next year. Keep an eye on your for the latest news on these opportunities and more as information comes to us. Delta Mishler is working on finding long-term exhibit opportunities in the community for BAA members. In view of this, she is assembling a catalog of members artwork to present to venues and will be sending out a template in a separate for interested members to submit their artwork.

6 The BAA webpage gets hundreds of visitors a month! Would you like some of that traffic? Current members in good standing can have a link to their art-related website on the Burbank Art Association page. your name and website information to Johnathon Gallagher at gallagrafix@earthlink.net. Also, if you would like a photo of your artwork in the BAA online gallery, one photo to Johnathon. Photos should be 640 x 480 at 72 dpi. Help us compile a master calendar of local art events and exhibit opportunities! We are working on a listing of opportunities to exhibit our members in the local community. If you know of festivals, fairs or other events in and around Burbank, please send all of the submission info to Joanna at joannamlewis@gmail.com. We will add the information to a master calendar. Penstrokes. Sharon Dellamarie Vivianne Bowman spent a weekend oil painting in Big Bear. It was lovely weather and lots of bears in the form of wood and such. No live ones! Helena Bowman headed up to Santa Rosa for Thanksgiving. We look forward to seeing any inspirations from the trip! Linda Roletti will be showing her fiber art in the Uncommon Threads show December 5-23 at the San Fernando Valley Arts & Cultural Center. New member Christine Mallouf is excited about her gallery show next year in April at Gallery 839 on Magnolia! Jeri Grover is one of 5 artists participating in a Trunk Sale at La Galeria Gitana, Dec. 9, 1-5 pm in San Fernando. Carter Sexton s "All That Glitters" Show Reception is Dec. 2nd, 5-8 pm. This coincides with the Light Up Valley Village event. There will be carolers, Santa and a TON of Glitter! Several BAA members have pieces in the show. Jackalope Pottery on Burbank Blvd. in North Hollywood will have a Holiday Art Event on December 9th, 12pm - 6pm. Come find one-of-a-kind gifts and beautiful plants and accessories at one of the most unique nurseries in the area. Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere. Ecarlatte Straub, former BAA member, and her husband Gerry, run a center for abandoned and displaced children, the Santa Chiara Children s Center, near Portau-Prince, Haiti. Gerry and Ecarlatte left their comfortable life in California to open this free center for children in the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. The children have many pressing needs.
