2 Gordana Gehlhausen New Member Profile Originally from former Yugoslavia, she grew up in a small Serbian Village in Bosnia and knew growing up that there was so much more to life than growing corn and potatoes. Gehlhausen was always very creative and managed to dress completely different from everyone else. She knitted her first sweater when she was seven years old. However, to fully achieve her goal of designing required that she take drastic steps and did so when she left home at the age of 18 and moved to the Croatian Coast. From there she found her way farther west and ended up in Germany for her college education, where she graduated with a Mater s Degree wth a dual major in Sport Education and Linguistics. Life took more unexpected turns as she Moved to the United States and settled in Atlanta, Georgia. It was there that Gehlhausen started to fine-tune her designing skills by creating a children's line for a Japanese manufacturer and retailer. In 1998 she moved to Charleston, South Carolina where she opened her first GOGA boutique. Gehlhausen has been a boutique owner now for the past eight years and has recently moved to Southern California where she opened her newest shop in San Diego in January of She has also been extremely fortunate to be chosen as one of the sixteen contestants on the sixth season of Project Runway. 4 New Member Profile Fashion Designer and Couturier Malgorzata Wieteszka-Slocomb was born and raised in Warsaw, Poland, where she showed a precocious talent for drawing and was considered the heir apparent to take over her father s architecture firm. Though appreciative of form and function, she traded a life designing with brick and mortar for silk and lace, and turned her innate understanding of proportion, form and construction to the female body. Her interest in fashion made an early appearance. After receiving a pattern-making magazine from her grandmother at age seven, Malgorzata (mahw-gho-zah-tah) created her first original design, a kimono sleeve blouse. More ideas and designs quickly followed. By the time she was graduating from a prestigious Warsaw high school, Malgorzata Wieteszka-Slocomb Malgorzata s creative and academic talents were recognized and she was recruited to receive a coveted fashion scholarship by Marvin Traub, the former president and CEO of Bloomingdale s. She arrived in the United States to begin her studies in 1992, completed her bachelor's degree in Fashion and Textile Design in 1995 and continued her education at the Fashion Institute of Technology where she received a certificate in Fashion Entrepreneurial Studies. During college Malgorzata became very active in the local Equity theater as a costume designer and stage manager. This experience sparked a life-long love of theater, which often shows in her work. Upon graduation, she plunged into the New York City fashion industry, working for the silk house of Rousso Apparel Group, designing better contemporary womenswear at Three Girls Running, and perfecting her skills at Castle Hill Apparel. Throughout her 10-year career she has not only designed multiple collections, but has remained deeply engaged in managing all aspects of bringing her creations to customers. In 2006, Malgorzata moved to San Diego to support her husband's career. Although leaving New York was difficult for a fashion designer, Malgorzata found California to be yet another source of inspiration for her creative soul. In 2009, between raising her young family and serving her community, Malgorzata launched her own design house, Malgorzata Couture, providing custom, couture design and expert tailoring for discerning women throughout San Diego. Malgorzata s creations are opulent, elegant and Red Carpet worthy, featuring the most luxurious silks, real pearls, coral and jewels. She is inspired and energized by the people she meets, whether in New York, Paris, Milan, Rome or San Diego. Malgorzata s designs reflect her influences and passions. She is known for her attention to the smallest detail and her ability to combine fit and function with unique design and style. I want my designs to enable my clients to feel not only beautiful but also confident; I want them to feel feminine and powerful at the same time says Malgorzata. I like to dream big and so should they! Despite her busy schedule, Malgorzata is fully committed to her community. She donates her time and talents in support of charities such as Child Help, Mamma s Kitchen and the California Bipolar Foundation. Currently, her original Valentine s Day-inspired gown is featured on the invitation for United Way of San Diego County's, Hearts United benefit fashion show. Local fashionistas can experience Malgorzata s latest complete collection, Birth of Venus during its debut in the Feb. 12, 2010, benefit fashion show, produced at the W San Diego by Leonard Simpson. 6 Trends Fall/Winter San Diego Historical Museum After a wonderfully informative tour of the San Diego Style exhibit, the attendees were treated with wine and cheese and viewed a DVD on Trends narrated by Mary Lou Luther. The predicted season is varied and surprisingly streamlined in color and texture. Looks are rich with emphasis on shapes and textures curves along side minimalism! Stand outs are wide belts (6 ) with keen attention played to hips and thigh high boots; winter shorts with leggings, skirts in all lengths and padded shoulders and extreme angled collars. Colors: Camel leads the way with close seconds of olives, jewel tones, purples, winter turquoise, reds and blues. Winter whites in multi-layers also starred! Textures: Featured are unconventional pairings with huge leaps beyond the normal knits. Oversized chunky cables, huge knotted knits that must be made by hand, were seen in many collections. Feathers and leather are at a creative peak this season. Leathers barreled-dyed in lipstick colors and edgy prints. Accessories: Bangles are out, but cuffs are in! Matching gloves and purses are a must and if wearing twill, gloves and purse should mirror the same fabric. Necklaces are big in chain and pearl 3 to 4 strands with bigger embellishments. Shawls are in, as well as, boot shoes with feathers! Cosmetics: Sheer colors replace multi-shadow layers on the eyes. Surprisingly bleached eyebrows with some whites and pastels are used in place of pencil drawn lines that went out with Harlow...will see more in the future! Key Looks: Menswear for women glen plaid, pinstripes, structured suits. Boots of all lengths. Curves. Chunky knits.. Con t. page 10

7 Message from the Regional Director I hope that you are all had a wonderful summer and I want to personally thank the Style Committee for their work in putting on a stupendous Gala this year. It was more successful then ever and we have rebranded FGI in the community. This event enabled us to give four $1,500 fashion scholarships to worthy students and $3,000 to the Monarch school for disadvantaged children. It couldn t have been done without all of you. Recently I went to New York for the Regional Director s Conference 2010: Survival of the Fittest, Navigating the new Economy and attended many panels and workshops. We heard presentations form the Rising Stars, visited the FIT Museum installation, and my favorite was meeting the Keynote Speaker Isobel Toledo who recently designed Michelle Obama s outfit for the inauguration. I came home re-energized and ready to share my renewed energy with our group. Hope to see you all at our upcoming events! We have some Great ones! And don t forget the Holiday Party! George Bates, Regional Director 29 th Annual Golden Scissors San Diego Mesa College hosted the 29 th Annual Golden Scissors Awards at the Gaslamp Horton Westin on May 8 th. The evening began with a cocktail reception and a silent auction that had fun fashionable items. The entire fashion show is produced by students at the San Diego Mesa College Fashion Program under the direction of Professor Andrea Marx and Professor Susan Lazear. Marx and Lazear welcomed everyone and got the festivities started. The theme for the evening was Graffiti & Lace with vignettes in each scene on the runway. The Guest Designers were Katya Pshechenko, visiting from the Ukraine and Alumni Designer Kathleen Argerake. Pshechenko excels in clothing with beautiful textures and embellishments and Argerake has created a clever bag collection made from mostly recycled materials. The Fashion Show concluded with collections from the students. Keith Bonar won first place for his menswear collection. The Best Award for continuing excellence went to Osbaldo Ahumado Kari Lam. The Rising Star Award went to Chris Arreguin. The remainder of first place prizes went to: Erica Derby (Millinery), Vana Twohey (Weekend Wear), Laura Borneman (Day Wear), Chris Aherns (Special Occasion), Rachel Flemens (Club Wear), Voshel (Evening Wear), Clara Allen (Retro-Redo), and Rachel Flemens (Fantasy). For Collection the Best Workmanship went to Megan Cost and the Most Creative went to Michelle D Alessandro.
