1 Summer 2006 Speaker Dianne York-Goldman FALL/WINTER Trend Report The Fall/Winter Trend Report was held at the Embassy Suites in La Jolla. The Embassy has a wonderful ambience combining greenery with the sound of running water. Karen Rowley chaired this May Event. The evening began with cocktails and a social hour giving the members time to get acquainted with each other. The Hotel served a Buffet Dinner with an Italian flair for all the guests. The program began with Dianne York-Goldman, CEO of Spa MD, talking about her new make-up line, DYG. Dianne brought along a make-up artist and members were given a chance to have a complete makeover with this new mineral based make-up. Everyone felt beautiful and pampered! Marijo Luranc owner of a Day Spa and a specialist in Permanent Makeup addressed the group next. Marijo gave 10 Tips about Permanent Make-up that everyone should know. This included the entire list of dos and don ts. It was very educational and gave everyone a better idea of the process involved in permanent make-up. The evening concluded with the showing of the DVD from the Fall/ Winter Trend Report. This was an exciting night of apparel, accessories, color and fabric from New York, London, Milan, Paris, and Los Angeles. We were able to get a sneak peak of all the coming trends. A great night for fashionistas! 2 Message from the Regional Director In May I traveled to New York for the annual Regional Directors Conference offering a number of exciting programs, workshops, speakers, and events. The theme for the Conference was The New Consciousness...Create, Connect, Collaborate. The first evening we had a dinner at the famous Algonquin Hotel. Our guest speaker was Liz Lange who designs stylish, flattering, and top quality maternity wear. She signed an exclusive deal with Nike in 2001 and designed a line for Target in She has a catalogue, website, and stores in Beverly Hills and Madison Avenue in New York. What a dynamo! Some of my favorite speakers were Emmanuelle Linard of Trend Union who does a visual presentation in colors, materials, shapes, and lifestyles of upcoming trends, Robin Lewis of the Robin Report has a Newsletter with strategic information of business trends & forecasting and the talented designer Charles Nolan whose store is in the cool meatpacking district. The store was filled with trendy clothes, must have accessories, books, glassware, shoes and handbags. It was chic, whimsical and fun. The highlight of the Conference was visiting Kleinfeld Bridal, which has for over 60 years offered the largest and finest selection of designer wedding gowns in the world. As we arrived two models greeted us dressed in glamorous Carolina Herrera wedding dresses. Then the beautiful designer came in and surprised us. Carolina was having a trunk show at Kleinfeld Bridal and came in an hour early to talk with us. She was so charming and designs a feminine, luxurious bridal line with impeccable quality. She is one of my favorite designers and it was such an uplifting experience to meet her in person. We also spent a lot of time in Workshops to discuss membership, sponsorship, and programs. This is a wonderful way to network with other Regional Directors from around the world. The Fashion Group unveiled the NEW FGI logo, which is a combination of the male and female principals. Look for this soon coming in all our new correspondence. Lastly the 2007 International Conference will be in Sydney, Australia. It is tentatively planned for November I was given a sneak preview of the itinerary and it is going to be awesome! Start planning ahead for it now. Diana Cavagnaro NEW MEMBER PROFILE Cindy Bates Cindy is a Southern California native. She loves fashion and discovered her Passion for Fashion as a high school exchange student in Europe. While studying, she spent time in museums and Couture Houses with designers and buyers. After College graduation, Cindy went on to a Fashion Institute to pursue a career as a Buyer. While at the Institute, she also taught sewing to Children and Men. Upon graduation, from the Institute, she started her career as a Buyer. Traveling to New York and other cities exposed her to the top personnel in the fashion industry. She has purchased lingerie, dresses, bottoms, sweaters, and knits for women, all categories for men as well as women's accessories. She bought candy for a major candy company which proves that once you know the mechanics of a business...it crosses over to all types of business. Her love for flying encouraged her to become a flight attendant. She enjoyed the service but missed the fashion industry. She is now giving back by sharing her experience and knowledge as the Director of Education and instructor for the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising at their San Diego campus. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking (cheesecakes, pastas, chicken, and more) sewing, knitting, and needlepoint. She likes to indulge in manicures, pedicures, facials, and massages. Cindy resides in the North County with her daughter, a dog, and 3 cats. Calendar of Events Watch your for invitations! 4 etailing Panel event Panel of Experts The July FGI event was hosted by FIDM and featured an expert web panel moderated by Felena Hanson. These Experts covered Trends, Designs and Marketing on the Web. The Panel consisted of Steven Hyde, Go Clothing; Pam Fox, Site Lab; Reid Carr, Red Door Interactive; and Dan Smith, DSD Business Systems. Go Clothing has a large selection of designer clothing and apparel on-line. Site Lab is an interactive agency that has nationally recognized experts in search engine marketing and online marketing campaigns. Red Door Interactive specializes in Internet presence management. DSD Business Systems is one of the leading suppliers of business software solutions. What a treat to have so many professionals in one room. Members Beth Thorpe and Terry Keefer Co-Chair Denise Baca with member Grace Decker The audience was asked to write down their questions and Felena skillfully led the panelist through the variety of questions. The experts discussed topics such as design, budget, marketing and future trends on the web. The evening was so informative that the members did not want to leave at 9:00pm and each question brought up 2 more questions. You really know that you have a successful event when the members want to stay. Felena Hanson and Denise Baca co-chaired this fabulous event! Feel like a Diva for One Night Guests and Members The FGI event for June was Feel like a Diva for One Night (Beautiful Skin, Beautiful Clothes). The event was at Sherry Bittner Brown s house in La Jolla. The President of Intuit Beauty, Jeanne Lorin, shared her story of starting her business. Jeanne s tag line is A skin care obsession and her vision was to create the highest quality skin care products at affordable prices. The Intuit Beauty Company came to assist Jeanne in giving a facial to the guests. Everyone who came felt royally pampered! Members enjoying the products! Jeanne Lorin The Spa Party included a trunk show featuring award winning Irish fashion designer Lyn Mar. These hand loomed creations are elegant and comfortable 3-piece outfits that are great for traveling. This Dublin resident has dressed celebrities such as Jane Seymour, Senator Hilary Clinton, Roma Downey, Olivia Newton John, Enya, Aliza, Leeza Gibbons and Irish President Mary. McAleese. These stylish designs delighted the members and it is not surprising with a client list like this that Lyn Mar's designs proved to be a knockout addition to an already perfect evening. Amirah Hall Amirah Hall co-coordinated her extraordinary jewelry with Lyn Mars designs. Amirah creates semi-precious, one of a kind jewelry. KUSI Channel 9 did a wonderful pre-segment on the event. If you missed these Lyn Mar designs, you can still catch them at Chara Designs at 5568 La Jolla Blvd. in La Jolla. All the proceeds of Lyn Mar designs go to the San Diego FGI. The hours are M-F 12:00-5:00pm. Weekends are by appointment. Call (858) Lyn Mar Designs at KUSI
5 Member Profile Retail and fashion were an early calling for Grace Decker. She took up sewing, and made most of her own clothing starting in high school. A life passion for archaeology took her to Beloit College, Wisconsin. But fashion prevailed and she earned her BA and MBA from Northeastern University, Boston, MA. Grace joined the retail operations of Jaeger International in Boston, and soon moved to North America headquarters in N.Y.C. With increasing responsibilities for stores, merchandising and buying Grace continually expanded her horizons. She found time to be a member of the Career Counseling Committee of FGI in NYC, lending her expertise to those seeking a career in fashion. Recruited from Jaeger, Grace spent 8 years as President of the Coach Retail organization, growing the business from $5M to over $100M. Grace was then recruited as President of the Kleinfeld Bridal group, to transform the store to a national retail presence. After bridal, Grace moved to the maternity business as VP Stores for A Pea in the Pod, Dallas, Tx. In Dallas she served on the Board of FGI. The next call was in the retail cosmetics/skin care area and a move to San Diego as President/CEO of Complexions Rx. While that was short lived, the Internet boomed and Grace led a software company to market an on-line shopping technology. Grace is currently the Merchandise Manager for Tiffany & Company at Fashion Valley. She brings a wealth of experience in retail, merchandising, and fashion to the SD chapter of FGI. 6 Memoirs of Co-Regional Directors Madeleine Pavel and Diane Stocker Madeleine Pavel was Co-Regional Director with Diane Stocker from At that time Madeleine was in the fashion industry as a Fashion Specialist, coordinating special events and fashion shows in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego, teaching fashion show production at FCC and merchandising VANITY, a women s upscale retail store in Horton Plaza. Prior to moving to San Diego as a newlywed in 1984, Madeleine was the West Coast sales representative for Liz Claiborne Accessories, every season working directly with Liz Claiborne s designers to merchandise belts, scarves, handbags and item jackets. Madeleine also produced and narrated Liz s personal appearances/fashion shows within the five western states at all of the major retailers. Madeleine began her fashion career as a Communications Studies graduate of UCLA as a special events and publicity coordinator for the May Company s 27 stores in Southern California. During the mid 80 s until 1990, San Diego s local morning show on channel 8 at the time was Sun-Up San Diego where Madeleine would make special appearances and guest co-host for Kathi Diamant, presenting mini-trend shows as well as interviewing other experts in fashion, beauty, the food industry and decorating. One of the highlights of their term as Co-Directors was attending the Regional Directors Conference in NY. This was a great opportunity to meet and brainstorm with RD s from across the country, Canada and Mexico. Madeleine & Diane s goals as co-directors were to increase the membership by expanding the FGI s visibility in the community, presenting interesting trend shows with notable speakers, meeting Elsa Klench at an event and forming enduring bonds with FGI members. During their tenure, Diane gave birth to Charlie, her first son and Madeleine had Amanda, her second child. The biggest challenge during Diane and Madeleine s directorship was juggling life between home, newborns, business, and the Fashion Group. Working hand in hand with Diane Stocker as Co-Regional Director formed a special relationship that has currently transferred into a new business venture, Designing Housewives. Madeleine and Diane stage homes to sell by utilizing what is the sellers already own, sprucing up and often improving the placement of furniture, artwork, and accessories in order to sell the home for the highest price in the shortest amount of time. The Designing Housewives neutralize the home to make it immediately more saleable to a wider group of potential buyers. They do this by taking away things that are too personal and creating fresh appealing vignettes. Very often fresh paint is essential to stage the home properly. Every staging client is encouraged to deep clean and de-clutter prior to The Designing Housewives staging efforts. As an added bonus, it has been quite common for their real estate clients to be so enthusiastic about the potential of their furnishings, once they have seen the reorganization, repositioning and re-accessorizing, that Madeleine and Diane will go on to help design, select colors and essentially stage their new home to live. They are developing a strong residential design business and plan to expand to offices and model homes. To contact The Designing Housewives, call or via at pavel@cox.net or dstocker12@cox.net.

This was the 25th year of this well orchestrated event. The Fashion Promotion Class produced this show under the direction of Professors Andrea Marx & Susan Lazear. The theme for the runway show was Silver Anniversary. Zandra Rhodes and Leonard Simpson took turns at the podium and delighted the audience. The evening began with a reception and silent auction concluding with a slick runway show. The first segment began with guest alumnae Thomas Woodard. His beautiful line wowed the audience. Another crowd pleaser was the fantasy segment in which the garments were made from non-fabric sources. Corn husks, saran wrap, duck tape, CD s and playing cards were some of the nonfabrics used to make these creative designs. The finale filled the runway with creative collections from the design students. The evening concluded with awards presented by Elizabeth Armstrong, Vice-President of Mesa College. 1 st Place went to Neva Mackres (Weekend Wear), Nora Stoycheva (Day Wear), Elizabeth Mena (Special Occasion),Maria Rodriquez & Estella Mora ( Club Wear & Evening Wear), Kym Meyers (Collections), Caprice Bowers (Retro-Re-Do), Osbaldo A (Fantasy Creations) and Jean Esch (Millinery) Best Workmanship and Most Creative went to Estela Mora & Maria Rodriquez.
