1 Summer 2009 Fashion Exposed San Diego Mesa College presented the 28 th Annual Golden Scissors Fashion Show & Awards Gala on Friday May 15, 2009 at the Town and Country Resort. The evening began with a VIP social hour and a fun filled silent auction. The theme for the night was Fashion Exposed! Susan Lazear and Andrea Marx Andrea Marx, Program Director, and Professor Susan Lazear greeted the crowd. KUSI Style Guy Leonard Simpson gave welcoming remarks to the eager crowd and got the Fashion Show started. The first scene began with guest designer and Alumnae, Jeanne Reith highlighting her designs from Lambs Players Theater. The Children s wear section is always a hit with the audience and this time was no exception. One darling model wouldn t leave the stage so she had to be helped off. Another crowd pleaser is the Millinery section where Mesa Deans and the President Dr. Rita Cepeda model hats made by the students. One of the audiences favorite segments was the Retro Redo where the students use all kinds of things other than fabric to create their outfits. The finale ended with the Collections of students showcasing 3 to 5 of their designs. The show wrapped up with Dr. Rita Cepeda handing out awards to deserving students. The Mesa College students in the promotion class produced this entire show. Additional Mesa contributions were the multimedia Students under Professor Alfonso Saballett, and the Hip Hop Dancers under Instructor Melissa Adao. San Diego City College Cosmetology Students under the direction of Sudabeh Phillips styled the Hair and Makeup. 2 New Member Profile I am interested in Fashion Styling not only individuals but also bringing fashion to the Corporate setting. I plan to hold seminars teaching how to build a current, fashionable, versatile wardrobe, "Day In To Evening Dressing", the "12 Most Essential Items All Women Should Own", and "Building Upon The Basics", to build multiple fashionable outfits. Stevie Mykel After years of working at Nordstrom in various positions, Manager, Sales Professional, Personal Shopper, Visual Merchandiser and Model, I am currently in the process of starting my business as a Fashion Stylist. I hope to position myself in this current volatile economy, as a Fashion Stylist/ Wardrobe Consultant/Personal Shopper. To define my personal style is tough, as my closet reflects many different trends and eras. I tend to dress somewhat costumey, however I prefer to think of myself as a "progressive classic". My earliest inspiration most definitely comes from Audrey Hepburn. My Mother would keep me home from school to watch old movies with her. Breakfast at Tiffany's was my favorite. Ah, the dresses & hats! The "sleeveless shift dress" is a staple in my wardrobe, represented in numerous colors and fabrications. I definitely am attracted to vintage. I channel the 40's all the way to the 70's. Love the boho hippie. For some reason the 80's escaped me, aside from the "big" hair. I like to think that I am able to recreate most any look at a given notice. I guess you could call me a clothes collector. Whatever it is, it consumes me. I truly have found my passion!

4 eye on style/trend setter Jeffri Salisbury Fashion Group gets inside the head of its current educational co-chairwoman Inspired by: travellingtravelingcities in America and large foreign countries. Favorite word: Favorite because it feels hydrating. Don t say: potential - it is never good enough. In a nutshell: I am a person that finds beauty in a single line. I love the sound of trash trucks. What else? I was attracted to fashion at an early age. I really enjoy business and am so fortunate to have experienced owning my own businesses, success and failures both. My great grandmother was a money lender when she first moved to America from Italy, maybe I get it from her. Fashion hero: My mother was always the fashion plate, in fact when I went to high school I was always the first in my class to wear the newest trend. It was my Mom that was responsible most of the time we would fight over what I wore, but she usually won and she was always right. I think I have always wanted to have people look up to me the way I lok up to my Mom. Back story: Graduate Fashion Institute in New York Stylist Lord & Taylor Freelance Designer Brainchild Jeffri & Co., back in the 80 s, it was one of the first contemporary embellished T-shirt collections for woman using graphics, laces, beading, crystals. Lost love: Romantique Bebe, upscale infant and children s wear, carried in Over 300 specialty boutiques and department stores. I sold the business after 11 years to pursue my true love, my husband. Now what? Consultant for small business startup and new designers who need help with research, merchandising and critique on new designs or concepts. J.Style is a San Diego based fashion service owned by Jeffri Salisbury. Over 30 years in the fashion industry makes her a favorite instructor at the Fashion Careers College, where she shares her passion and understanding of fabric and apparel design. 6 Fashion Week El Paseo Several of the members attended the FGI luncheon & Fashion Show during the Fashion Week in El Paseo. Arriving to the big tent we were greeted by the past Regional Director s Susan Stein and Diane Marlin- Dirkx. During the champagne social we were able to meet John Paul Dejoria who is founder of the John Paul Mitchell Systems. After the delightful luncheon, Graison Foster who was mistress of ceremonies got the well-orchestrated show underway. She looked smashing in a hat and dress designed by project runway winner (fourthseason) Christian Siriano. The Fashion Show featured fashions from InSanity at Denise Roberge on El Paseo. Festivities continued for the entire week with a knockout schedule of fashion events! Message from the Regional Director The Summer has swung into full speed with many activities and events coming up. The June mixer at Karen Millens in Fashion Valley was a huge success. In August A Day at the Races was held on a weekend day in August so that more members could attend and it was Sold Out! In the Fall we have set up Trend for a date still to be determined and this year the Holiday Party and annual meeting will be Sunday December 13 at the Sheraton Hotel where we will be able to watch the Parade of Lights. Yes we are bringing back A Night of Stars..Style Awards by popular demand on March 27, Gretchen Productions will be putting on the fashion show for us. If you would like to be on the planning committee for this event please contact co-chair Julie Fought. ( ) The raffle tickets you received in the mail sold very well and will be used for the fashion scholarships which will be given out at the Night of Stars. Thank you to all who participated! 7 Liquid Runway San Diego s IT Fashion Show 2009, Liquid Runway was presented by the Art Institute of California, Westfield UTC, and Channel 933. This Gala was held at Hard Rock Hotel on May 30 and began with a VIP reception. Jeremy Scott was on hand to greet the guests and serve as a celebrity Judge for the student designs. He had been a contestant on the 5 th Season of Project Runway and graciously donated one of his creations for the silent auction at the VIP reception. President Liz Erickson and Director Sheena Gao began the celebration for this inaugural graduating class. After welcoming the audience San Diego s IT fashion show got underway. This highenergy show was divided into 4 segments: Sportswear, Swimwear, Avante-garde, and Evening. The fast paced show was produced by Tanya McAnear s Badmadge Productions and included non-stop entertainment. At the end of the show awards were handed out that had been judged by guest judges including the celebrity Judge Jeremy Scott. Winners were Tatiana Zaykovskaya (Best in Show), Kim Frank (Best constuction/most technical), Heber Martinez (Most Creative), and Tommy Eggert (Most Marketable). After the Fashion Show 944 sponsored an after party. Twenty percent of the proceeds will be donated to City of Hope s Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer and EDMC Education Foundation. The Art Institute provides fashion, design, media, and culinary arts with a bachelors or associate degrees. The Art Institute of California, San Diego is one of 40 Institutions in North America. 9 F.G.I TREND By Natalie Grollnek We looked out over the ocean, as the sun was setting, at the beautiful Point Loma Nazarene University campus. The amazing view was the perfect start to a night filled with fashion, friends, and wonderful film. After getting acquainted and catching up, while enjoying an amazing array of appetizers, the panel on eco-friendly fashion and style took the attention of everyone in the room. The panel was made up of four eco -friendly companies all working within fashion, design, and art. The companies represented were; Mythology Boutique, Reinterpret, Ecotopia, and Ir2 Interior research. The panel answered questions on their predictions on turning fashion green, and the benefits of going green in everyday life. The speakers were very passionate and very informative, and got everyone excited about doing something good for the earth. After the panel we watched a video montage of the various fashion shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris displaying fall and winter trends. The video was entertaining and informative, while surprising the audience with some of the dramatic future trends. The Best Bets of the upcoming trends for the season are: Structured Jackets The Little Black Dress Peplum Jackets One Shoulder Leggings and tights Leather pants and motorcycle jackets Draped dresses Purple Red Clothes and Red Lips Pumps The Ladies Dress The gentlemen s suit for a woman The film made everyone excited about the fashion to come. With the new trends on our minds and the amazing fashion artwork consuming our thoughts, the night came to a close. Everyone seemed to have had a wonderful time and learned a lot about each other, the green movement, and the newest fall and winter styles. This was enough to keep every one eager until the next F.G.I TREND meeting.

Beth and her husband Brad are currently going in front of the City Council for final approval to get Poinsettia Park Field 1 renamed Thorp Field in Mitchell's honor. Along with that they are going to create a living memorial to help sponsor underprivileged kids to play baseball through LaCosta Youth Baseball, Carlsbad Youth Baseball and with Challenge League. A Mitchell Thorp Award will also be given out during the league s championship days. San Diego has graciously donated $100 in his name.
