DPAL Annual Meeting The DuPage Art League would like to invite you to the annual meeting on... Sunday, June 5 from 4 to 7 pm at The Kincaids 2S109 Apache Drive Wheaton, IL Come prepared to enjoy dinner provided by the board as our thanks to all who volunteer at the league, and members who would like to hear reports about the league and how the year has gone. It's our chance to share our goals and achievements. All are welcome. Please RSVP to the art league and feel free to bring your spouse or other family member. Directions from the art league are as follows: Travel south on West Street. Cross over Roosevelt and continue south (West Street becomes Warrenville and then Plamondon) until it ends at Orchard (a three way stop with a blinking light.) Turn left onto Orchard and then turn right onto Flint Creek (second street on the right.) Turn left onto Apache Drive (first left.) The Kincaids home is in the middle of the first cul-desac on the left(east) side of the street. It s a white two-story colonial with the address on the house and mailbox. Tom Lynch Workshop Tom Lynch had a very successful three-day watercolor workshop at the league recently. Here are a few of the quotes from people in the class. The man s a fountain of information, it s totally awesome. I always admired his work, never thought I d meet him let alone work with him. One of the best workshops I ve ever taken. I recently joined the League, saw his work in the window and signed up. It was wonderful, I hope he comes back again. If you missed attending, look for his and other workshops we re planning for you.

3 3 Collectors' Corner is Closing Down! Yvonne Thompson dupage_art_league@sbcglobal.net Well, I m sure that headline got your attention! No, don t worry there is still going to be that wonderful area at the art league, but after getting the full support of the board, I m just changing the name. For some time now the name Collectors Corner has bothered me. First, it is no longer in a corner. Those members who have been with us for many years will remember it was in a corner when we had the building across the road. Secondly, I think the name does not reflect the real nature of the area. It is where customers find the best gifts even if it is a gift for themselves! This does not really become a problem once someone is inside the store because it is evident it is the gift area. But what if someone sees Collector Corner advertised or on the website? Will they automatically know it is the best place for unique reasonably priced gifts and cards? What will I call it? I researched some of the larger museums, including The Art Institute in Chicago, to see what they called their gift area and decided that name would fit us too. So, from now on that area will simply be called The Gift Shop. The Dupage Art League Gift Shop to be precise, but that is a bit of a mouthful and if I get a sign made, it could be bigger than the actual area! So, in the next few weeks (and months!) you will see a few changes. It will be mainly just to the paperwork and inventory forms which will be titled The Gift Shop. Guidelines and criteria will stay the same, with a limit of three wall hanging pieces and six pieces of portfolio work. I am also planning a relaunch reception on Sunday, August 4, which will be open to the public and the press. I would like to set up a Meet the Artist for all Gift Shop exhibitors for that day. Call or me if you would be interested in being there. Two artists would share a table and display a tiny selection of the items they have in the Gift Shop. It will be a great way for everyone to match a face to the artwork and hear firsthand from the artist how their artwork is created. There will be no charge for this event to anyone and all work maybe purchased. We ll supply refreshments and may even have a raffle or two. Also, I will be on hand to answer questions should you want to know how to enter work in the gift shop or our holiday show Yuletide Treasures which starts in November. Russian Artist Will the member who came in with an artist from Russia please contact the league and leave your number? Valerie Lorimer, featured Gallery II Artist for May 2011 The May Gallery II exhibit will feature the work of mixed media artist Valerie Lorimer and runs from April 29 through May 31; an opening reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 1. Everyone is welcome. Through all the twists and turns of my journey, creativity has always taken center stage. I have loved creating for as long as I can remember, and have always been involved in the arts in one way or another all my life. A bit of info I thought you might find interesting my bachelor s and master s degrees are in Music, and I worked professionally in Chicago for many years as an accompanist for the Chicago Opera Theatre and Chicago Symphony Chorus. I also Morning Glories enjoyed writing musical pieces for my singer friends, but found that the pull to create art was stronger than my desire to create music. My mixed media creations tend to have a lot of detail (or so I ve been told!), and have also been described as whimsical, nurturing, spiritual, intuitive, and fun! I love blending different media including pan pastel, acrylic, ink, Prismacolor markers and colored pencil, and also really love blending text into my pieces. My inspiration comes from nature, architecture, music, theater, the written word inspiration is everywhere if your eyes and ears are open. I love traveling to new places and seeing how it reflects in my work. Creativity is what fuels my heart and soul it is, in a sense, spirit and energy. I cannot imagine a day when I wake up and don t have the freedom to create. It s great fun to start a piece and see where it will lead. I believe a piece of art should take you down a path a path that always means different things for each person. Valerie is a member of the DuPage and Naperville art leagues, the Chicago Artist Coalition. Her work has been exhibited in various venues, won numerous awards, and has been used for book covers in the United States and the United Kingdom. I look forward to meeting fellow DPAL members at the reception on May 1. If you can t make it that day, I hope you ll stop in and see the exhibit. If you d like to take a peek at my work, stop by my website at

4 4 Winner of Program Raffle At our March program, Virginia Thompson won this piece of art from Gary Wick s pastel demo. She s one lucky lady! The Aurora Public Library opened their new Reflections Gallery in January of 2011 featuring 10 area artists. The library is located at 555 Eola Road, Aurora. Kristen Hill won Best Of Show for her watercolor, Farmer s Market, in the Naperville Art Leagues March show, Fresh Perspectives. Alliance of Fine Art News Hugh Skibbens, AFA delegate from DPAL For those unfamiliar with the Alliance of Fine Art, it is an umbrella organization of fifteen art leagues and guilds throughout the west and southwest suburbs. The AFA is hosting a Fine Art Fair on July 23 and 24 at the Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oakbrook. Spaces are still available if you wish to display. Now through May 5 the AFA "Best of the Best" show is on exhibit at the same location. The show features more than 90 award winning works from the member art leagues. Pieces include everything from paintings to clay and book and paper art. For more information on these and other happenings in the various leagues throughout our area, visit the AFA website at Papier Maché was the Material Imagination was the key word as students in Nancy Tait's class, Creative Crafts for Children, fashioned whimsical animal sculptures. Using newspaper and wheat paste, simple materials were transformed into a blue hippo, a wrinkly dachshund, a smiling swan, a bright frog, and a floating otter. Emphasis in this new class in on individual expression with large doses of fun! Kandice A. 5 5 Board Notes The board voted to change the name of Collector s Corner to Gift Shop, because it more accurately describes what is sold there. The board discussed how to change the POS so staffers could tell who is an active member with paid dues and who is inactive or has not paid their membership dues. Yvonne needs volunteers to help with computer information including data base entry, print class reports from POS, rewrite or add information to the menu, someone to print out end of day sales and make it match daily tender receipts, class adjustments. If you are interested see Yvonne. Invitations have been mailed to new members inviting them to a reception at 6:30 p.m. before the regular scheduled Monday night meeting on April 18. The summer class schedule is out. The board voted to begin a new policy for workshops beginning in the fall. The policy will be no refunds if student cancels the workshop five days or less before the workshop begins and half price refund if student cancels more than five days before the workshop begins. Exceptions will be dealt with on a one by one basis. Investigation of a stair climber to get handicapped to the library was too expensive. The DPAL annual meeting will be held at Carol Kincaid s home on Sunday, June 5. Food and drinks will be provided. The slate of officers will be voted upon at the April program meeting night. Rocio Hernandez will be paid for up to five hours per month to operate our new website which we hope will be up and running by the middle of May. The Art of the Internet by Melody Williamson As I struggle to gain some semblance of technical and artistic skill, I ve also turned to the Internet. Sure, there are lots of sites out there, but there s also a huge wealth of information well worth the effort. Let me give you a few ideas. Use the search site Google ( Your search query should describe what you need with as few terms as possible. Choose your words carefully (3 to 8 key words). Google offers search help; click Advanced Search to the right of the query entry box I recommend taking a look even if you re experienced. Google has a number of ways to search for information. The four best are located on the top left portion of the main web page. Remember all results are based on matching your query. Don t hesitate to refine or restate or even redo your query. Web: Will give you all the matching websites same as if you were to enter your query and click on the search button. A good place to start, but you can narrow your searches using: Images: Besides the obvious, this is a good way to search if you re visually oriented or to narrow your search as in I will know it when I see it approach. It works! Video: Great way to find demos, instruction, or more graphically illustrated info. I have found some really great videos but take notice of the length of the video before selecting. Short 1-2 minutes are likely sales snippets only. Most helpful free videos are 5+ minutess in length. More Blogs: Art related blogs are another great source of info, inspiration and friendship. These artists/bloggers have created a community. The sites are more informal and encourage participation. I have asked many a question and get very helpful responses. A place to start: artcareer.net/2008/100-must-see-art-blogs-of-every-form/ One last suggestion to find info in a more indirect way is to use the Links section of websites and blogs (have other names) you like. Not all sites have these but look for them on those you find most helpful. Can introduce you to some things you haven t thought about. Give it a try. It s a whole world of information. Drop me a note if you have questions or would like help with an in-depth art related search at my - myartsearch@gmail.com. Artist Choice Award Winner for April The Artist Choice Award Winner for the April Gallery I exhibit was Suzanne Massion's oil painting "Morning Has Broken. There were many clever entries based on a musical theme. Thanks to everyone who participated.
