1 The Irondequoit Art Club April SAM s Snippets by Sheila ( S.A.M. ) Shrestha What it Takes! A three part series. Part 2. Making of the Newsletter. Recently, one of our members stated that she doubted that our artists realize what goes into producing the club s newsletter, the Palette. I decided to share this info anticipating that you will literally read the newsletter under a new light! It appears to be a convoluted process but it actually works. The current editor, SAM, takes the following steps on the Pathway to the Palette : Requests info as early as the previous Palette. Sends annoying reminders online to membership to submit news items. Connects with the VP/Program Chair, currently John Lenhard, who identifies a monthly guest speaker, interacts to get a bio, title, pictures, and gist of presentation. He forwards this info to the Publicity Chair (SAM) who writes up a press release for inclusion in the Palette. Uses the press release from the previous step to generate publicity which will be the topic of the next Snippets. Composes Snippets for the month, trying to be very observant and detail-conscious about life happenings as well as praying for inspiration. Fleshes out submitted items, looks up incomplete &/or missing info such as addresses, times, dates, titles, show listings. Coordinates with the Refreshment Chair (Marjorie Maeske) to be able to publish names of Tuesday evening goodie-bringers. Coordinates with the Secretary (Judy Travis) for most recent minutes, and President (Sally Steinwachs) for additional items. Connects with Membership Chair and Co-Chair, Gary Knapp and Jan Ferry-Axman, for names & contact info of new members for publication. Seeks info from Sunshine Chair (Linda Hanss) to include notices about ailing members or to report condolences. Extracts info from Weds Program Chairs (David Pell and Jim Dawson) for the month s noon program; also from Coordinators of Irondequoit Town Hall Art Walk (Barb Montione) and Gigi s Art Exhibit (Jeanette Wojtas). Continues to organize, arrange, edit, and add straggler info. s Palette draft to Jeanette Musliner who officially serves as Treasurer but also doubles as 2 nd proof reader. It s hard to catch your own missteaks. (A beefy error just to be sure you haven t fallen asleep yet!) 1 Makes final corrections, revisions as needed. s Palette to those who are computer savvy. Provides hard copy to Carol Riesenberger, who handles the postal mailings. Often the hard copy is personally driven to Carol s home by Sally or Jeanette or SAM. Carol drives to Staples to reproduce the hard copies, folds, inserts into envelopes, addresses and mails. Tries to remember to send nonformatted, cut & paste issue to those members whose programs are incompatible and won t allow them to open the formatted attachment. At this point, hopefully the Palette is received by the IAC membership, read & enjoyed. Webmaster, Mark Babeck, puts the issue onto IAC s website, so if you misplace your Palette, you can always consult the website which has current & past issues. In conclusion, I hope by now you have an ink -ling of what goes into printing the Palette. A tremendous thank you goes to all members who help or have helped in the past in any way with the process. A special blessing goes to those who submit their news items on time with appropriate & legible details. If you are tempted to immediately delete or use your hard copy to cover the floor of your pet s cage, please

Message from Jeanette Ferretti- Wojtas who coordinates the art exhibit at GiGi's Restaurant, 2256 Hudson Avenue, just south of Titus Avenue. Dear Art Club Members: In February, 2016 Art Club Members were invited by the owners of GiGi s to have our Art on display for 3 month periods. (GiGi s has allowed us to advertise our shows.) Our work has been viewed by 100 s of patrons who love and enjoy this special treat. It s not often that a restaurant will invite an art group to display art. Usually the offer is made to only a few. I am inviting all members to seriously consider 3 showing 2 pieces of their work during the 3-month display periods. Please call me to see what dates are available ( ). Leave a message with name and contact number and I will get back to you and sign you up. I need 8 artists for each 3-month display period. Reminder: May 11, 2017 begins the next Art Display. Please also pick up work already hanging on that day as well so that the new work can be hung in its place as they are received. Thank you. You must provide a small card (business card size or 1/2 of a 3 x 5" card) with the title of each piece, price and contact information.

4 April Speaker Etching in Time Alice Chen Dr. Alice Chen Asian brush artist, Dr. Alice Chen, will give an art demonstration on her art entitled Oriental Brush Painting at the April 25 meeting of the Irondequoit Art Club to be held 7:30 PM at Chapel Oaks, St. Ann s Community, 1550 Portland Ave., Rochester, NY 14621, after the club s 7PM business meeting. Dr.Chen was born in China, and educated at the National University, Taiwan, the University of Kansas at Lawrence, Sydney University, Australia, and the Imperial College of London University. Before becoming a full-time professional artist almost two decades ago, Dr. Chen went through the rigorous training system for all artists in traditional Chinese painting. In her own work, she captures the essence of a subject with vital energy and flow. She goes beyond realism in expressing her emotion and sensitivity, always absorbing new ideas as well as techniques from both East and West. The Ying-Yang sign is her guiding post. Chen uses free brush strokes expressing energy flow on rice paper to capture the sensitivity of her emotion in creating visual poetry with a contemporary Oriental flair. Her spontaneous creation of flowers, birds, motifs from nature, vistas of landscapes often reflect the vitality, spirit, and symbolic meaning of the subjects. Dr. Chen s paintings have been exhibited at national shows and such institutions as Allegheny College in Pennsylvania and the University of Rochester, and in galleries including the Oxford Gallery and Ock Hee s in Honeoye Falls. Dr. Chen is on the faculty of Creative Workshop, Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester. She has received many awards including best in show and most popular art. In addition to being a popular speaker and demonstrator in art, Dr. Chen is an expert on mushrooms and presents programs on that subject to many groups. Dr. Chen can be reached at or by at DrAliceWChen@gmail.com Everyone is welcome. There is no charge for this event. The site is handicapped accessible. Attendees may request a supply list handout to further pursue classes in this art form. April Refreshments Maggie Brown & Mary Ellen Davis Facebook Progress.
