He is a member of the Inter Society Color Council, and Federation of Societies of Coatings Technology and has made several presentations on pigments and additives, both nationally and internationally, during his 29 years in the coatings business. How Carbon Black Properties Influence Electrical Conductivity of Coatings John R. Chatten, COLUMBIAN W e face the challenge of formulating and producing coatings to meet the needs of a broad range coating applications. For those applications that include special electrical requirements we must consider the influence of the various components and production techniques that can be used on the conductivity of the finished coating. This presentation will focus on the relationships of carbon black properties to electrical performance. Selecting the appropriate carbon black for your conductive application and optimizing your formulation will be discussed. OHN R. CHATTEN is the Manager of Technical Service for Industrial Carbon Blacks at Columbian Chemicals. He is responsible for meeting the technical needs of customers, the development and implementation of action plans to achieve indus- J trial carbon black product approvals in the coatings, inks and plastics market segments. He serves as a technical interface with customers, the leader of a Technical Inquiry Response Team and is responsible for literature development. For more than 42 years since attending Newark College of Engineering, John has been involved in developing carbon blacks to meet the coloristic, rheological, electrical and other performance requirements in end use applications.
