1 Parking at WASA meetings Now we can park off the street at meetings without fear of a parking fine. Thanks to Le Pine Funerals we may use their customer carpark, not the one for their work-related cars. It is in Linsey Street immediately south of the library and they definitely do not close the gate. Meetings upstairs at Box Hill Library 14 pages November 2016 issue 59 Next member s meeting upstairs in meeting room at Box Hill Library Tuesday 15 th November 7pm for 7.30pm start: 1040 Whitehorse Rd, Box Hill. At the November meeting there will be a panel discussion Q & A featuring : Vida Pearson multi-award winning artist and winner of WASA s Artist of the Year numerous times Stephen Powell multi-award winning artist, wildlife photographer and speaker Robert Knight WASA members will recall Robert did a terrific charcoal demo. for us early this year and he has much experience as a long-term professional artist. Brenda Innes. Brenda s career encompasses teaching, painting, gallery manager and AGRA co-ordinator for many years. Festive supper and plenty of conversation Also at our November meeting there will be a collection of books available for you to peruse with the compliments of Janet and Peter Flinn. If you'd like to have any of these books please bring a little money along and WASA will donate the proceeds to Birdlife Australia. 2 WASA October meeting papers, inks, paints and brushes Canson presentation by Andrew Harston We were greeted by an array of bags with mixed product samples for each person attending and more sample products were cheerfully given out throughout the evening. The evening began with us testing various papers to help us appreciate the range of paper qualities followed by paints and more. left various papers buckle or not, after water application. right same colour, different paint brands student quality on left, Schminke on right New papers for drawing, watercolour, ink, pastel included : Canson's Moulin du Roy which is a joy to use and may take over from Arches papers in the minds of many who were there. Canson's C á grain is an extra heavy weight drawing paper which many of us are looking forward to trying. Canson now has a product similar to Yupo which is worth trying if you like fluid watercolour or ink techniques described as polypropylene in white, black and transparent. To view the Canson website and read about the products Lots of information was provided and it was a happy night unfortunately Ralph our regular scribe was not able to attend so we don't have a write-up for you to follow through with. WASA's thanks go to Andrew for a professional, information packed and entertaining session. Also to WASA members my apologies for lack of detailed write-up. 3 More from the 2016 Wild Awards Wild Awards 2016 Viewers Choice The most enjoyed artwork was Rikki Fisher's 'His Majesty' a large scratchboard of a male African lion. Running a close second was Alison Clark's 'Stealth and Beauty at Dusk, Leopard' The winner of the Senior Art gift voucher from viewers choice slips was WASA member Monika Barbian. Rikki Fisher's Viewers' Choice winner 'His Majesty' A viewer admiring Steve Morvell's 'Grand Elder Statesman, African Bull Elephant' Enjoyment at the Wild Awards (L to R) Jess Skepper, Rosemary Morgan and Colin Johnson Steve Powell accepting Steve Morvell's gold award from the judge Colin Johnson Page 3 of 14 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126

4 More from the 2016 Wild Awards (cont.) Steve Morvell was not able to come to Melbourne to receive his gold prize for his grand painting which won our Wild Awards He did write the following for us which his good friend Stephen Powell was able to read out to us on the night. 'I am terribly excited for the elie as he is a truly wonderful old man. Like you, I am sure we wildlife artists feel the need to do our critters true justice with our art and with this fella I felt I actually got there in the final artwork which as you know is not always a common end result for artists to achieve. In any case, if there is to be an award it must surely be his since after all I only had to show his true nature. Honestly, when we were in his presence for an hour in Kruger National Park I had already received my reward in the blessing of his presence and tolerance of our proximity. My thanks must please go to all the organisers, the sponsor of the gold award Art Spectrum and the workers and of course a special thanks to the judge Colin Johnson. I am truly humbled and honoured to be a part of WASA's Wild Award and very happy for my elie. Thanks also go to Vida Pearson for actually getting my artworks to the big city since I couldn't have done the trip to deliver. Sadly due to many commitments here I am unable to be there for the event celebration (28 th Sept. at AGRA Galleries) since I haven't yet learnt the art of being in multiple places at one time but know that I am there in spirit. Thanks again and I wish all a wonderful evening and exhibition." Steve M I noticed with interest two things in particular about the results and judging : i) Colin reviewed and chose without looking at any artist's name ii) The three major prize winners all work from their own references and have close experience of the subjects they painted. R P Kris Peter WASA Artist of the Year Karin McKee Karin achieved the highest number of points in WASA exhibitions during 2016 and received a trophy, $300 from the Society and a write-up on the WASA website awards page. "I feel very privileged to have received the award of Artist of the Year and it has been the absolute highlight of my art career to date." Contd. Page 4 of 14 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126

5 WASA Artist of the Year 2016 Karin McKee contd. As a recreational artist of only a few years, I am thrilled at the achievement. I really enjoy inspiring others to pick up a brush, have a go, participate in activities and be included in the wonderfully supportive society that is WASA. I paint what I love and hope that others enjoy my subject matter as much as I do! It does appear that I have an obsession for cats (of any shape or size, as long as they re fluffy and cute!) I try to expand my wildlife knowledge by travelling and gaining inspiration from local cultures and countries around the world. A recent visit to some African National Parks has given me a better understanding of wildlife in its truest setting, and how precious and endangered they have become - and I hope to be able to share the experience and emotions that come from it through my artwork. I don t have a specialty medium and will give anything a go once! I quite enjoy scratchboard, ink and watercolour, pastel and coloured pencil. I m an active member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA), Australian Society of Coloured Pencil Artists (AUSCPA), and have been assisting on the WASA council for two years." Paint and Sketch Saturday 5th November at Melbourne Zoo When you arrive phone Karin or Kris on to find out where the others are, (probably drinking coffee just inside front gate). No set finish time for us as it depends on weather and other commitments. Normal zoo admittance applies or free if you re a FOTZ member. If you would like some company it s wise to confirm attendance on the WASA Noticeboard or check with Kris on If you d like to share your wheels with others also please let us know. Kris is planning to depart Box Hill 8am IF it's good weather. This session is weather dependent not a good forecast Page 5 of 14 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126

10 Terry Napier's talk to WASA during September was inspiring for a number of reasons. It was written about in the October Warble and here's your chance to 'attend the meeting' for a short while except for sharing supper with everyone. Terry is an experienced and generous teacher and if you're thinking of teaching art or are already doing so, watch the video to hear his thoughts on the subject. Ctrl-click the image above or go to - log in using wasakp@optusnet.com.au and the password is cockatoo Please don't share these details with others. Once you're there if you can't see the list of WASA videos click the WASA logo in top right corner Check out the WASA Noticeboard to stay up to date with other members and more. It's a closed group for members only to post anything of interest. Page 10 of 14 P O Box 284 Canterbury Victoria 3126

Our thanks go to three members who have already put up their hands. *Contact meeting presenters to book, liase and assist the presenter if necessary. *Council Secretary to take Minutes at meetings. This task has been tentatively accepted and will be confirmed late this year. *The role of Exhibition Director has two parts: The organisational part of the role has been tentatively accepted and will be confirmed later this year. The hands-on part of the Exhibition Director's role of choosing galleries and on-site exhibition management is still available. *Assist David Reynolds edit /prepare films of meetings and gain some knowledge about the process. *Catering at meetings bring the bag of stuff, cake/biscuits and general help at meetings. (WASA reimburses for your incurred costs) *General help and discussion at Council meetings. If you'd like to have a chat about any of the above please call me on Council meetings are held on a needs basis and in 2017 we expect there will be only four meetings. You don't need to be on Council to assist the Society. Please consider Kris Peter, Reluctant President Our thanks again to the Wild Award sponsors : Art Spectrum, Neil Wallace Print Making Supplies, Canson and Senior Art Supplies.
