2 Compton Verney ART GALLERY AND PARK Where art meets nature... We re getting back to nature this autumn as we explore how the world-famous Victorian artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler was influenced by the world around him. This is an exciting first for us, having never shown Whistler s work at Compton Verney before. The artist s close observation of nature and its moods underpinned his powerful and haunting visions of nineteenth-century life, contrasting the natural and man-made worlds. This October we also present a spectacular temporary installation of art in the park; a special commission from artists Musson+Retallik who will illuminate the park and mansion with audio and visual designs to dazzle all ages. This is always a refreshing alternative to the firework displays of the season, and last year sold out well in advance. Book early to avoid missing out. To satisfy your Christmas shopping needs we ll be hosting our renowned annual Textile Fair in November, and will be partaking in Museum Shop Sunday, offering you great deals on high-quality gifts. Our festive weekends at the end of the season promise to delight the whole family with a range of activities from carol singing to Christmas crafts. Finally, we look forward to next year when we ll be staging an ambitious, blockbuster exhibition, Painting Childhood, in collaboration with the Royal Collection. Spring also sees the launch of our second eyecatcher art installation in the grounds. Compton Verney s entertaining programme of world-class exhibitions, events and experiences, and exquisite permanent collections make us a varied, engaging and rewarding place to visit. So come and see us soon! Professor Steven Parissien Chief Executive For the latest information visit 2018 Prices Membership See online for Member benefits and more information. 3 Autumn Exhibition This exhibition reveals new research into the influence of industry, the military and historical reflection on one of the greatest artists of the nineteenth century, through his depictions of natural and industrial landscapes. James Abbott McNeill Whistler ( ) was an American artist who lived most of his life in the UK. He was known for his innovative artistic style and bold personality, with a reputation for verbal and legal retaliations against art critics, dealers, and artists who insulted his work. Through this intriguing collection of paintings, sketches and prints, we will examine how his family involvement in Victorian industry, and his career in the US military, shaped his knowledge of observational drawing and influenced his artistic style. It also looks afresh at his work in the context of attitudes to landscape in British art and design, shaped not only by classical revivalism but by a desire for landscape improvement and productivity. Whistler s smoky images of warehouses, harbours and industrial scenes were designed to showcase a new kind of productive, wealth-generating landscape for the modern Victorian age; a view of nature constrained by man-made structures and urban life. This exhibition has been developed in partnership with The Hunterian, University of Glasgow. 4 Art in the Park Green Dwelling Opens March 2019 The March of the Imagination Oct, 2 4 Nov, 9 11 Nov, 6.30pm 9.30pm Step into a spectacular and colourful adventure when we transform our mansion and parkland with light and sound installations this autumn. Over three weekends, a new artwork designed by Musson+Retallik will bring Compton Verney to life. Exploring the relationship between the human mind and machines, the work picks up on themes from our earlier Summer Exhibition, The Marvellous Mechanical Museum. Become part of the installation, shining a torch onto 4000 reflective shapes that lead you on a migration through the park, and witness how modern technology combines with Victorian inventions to reveal a secret, cinematic world. Advance booking is recommended. Family Activity Sat 27 Sun 28 Oct, Tue 30 Sun 4 Nov, Sat 10 Sun 11 Nov, 12 noon 5pm Musson and Retallick have designed two gallery spaces; one into a zone of experimentation and the other into a dark room to test your own illuminated forms. Can you help them transform and create an amazing light installation? Using simple light reflective materials, you will work together and contribute in making an immersive space for everyone to be transported into another world. Early Bird Offer! Adult 8, Child 3. Book before 30 Sep Spring 2019 sees the launch of our second eyecatcher art installation in the grounds. Green Dwelling has been imagined by Dutch artist Krijn de Koning, and will consist of a collection of differently-sized green blocks ranged across the Old Town Meadow. The blocks highlight the history of the land: once the site of the medieval village of Compton Murdak, the meadow was planted with elm trees in the 18th century, which were lost to Dutch elm disease in the 1970s. Like a modern Stonehenge, the blocks playfully reference these lost histories. Paths and picnic benches are integral to the design, transforming the meadow into a destination to explore and enjoy, and providing an exciting opportunity to re-frame familiar views of the Grade-I listed mansion house. The eyecatcher commission is part of a Heritage Lottery funded project to restore and reimagine Compton Verney s Capability Brown-designed landscape. Timed entry: 6.30pm, 7.30pm & 8.30pm Adults 10, Child 5 Last entry 9.15pm, Terms and Conditions Apply 6 7

Tickets 10 Painting Childhood: From Holbein to Freud Sat 16 March Sun 16 June This celebration of children, childhood and innocence brings together some of the most iconic paintings, sketches and sculptures of children produced in the past 500 years. Featuring stunning portraits, amusing scenes and touching fancy pictures, the exhibition will explore the creative process and the specific challenges posed by painting children: from how to capture the fleeting moments of youth, to how to encourage young subjects to sit still. It also delivers deep insight into the place of family within an artist s life, and the ongoing tension between biography and creativity. Addressing themes such as Royal portraiture, play and learning, we will present masterpieces by artists including Hans Holbein the Younger, Anthony Van Dyck, Jan Steen, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, William Hogarth, Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, Johan Zoffany, John Everett Millais, Stanley Spencer, Louise Bourgeois and Lucian Freud, and feature loans from the Royal Collection and the National Gallery, among others. Iconic paintings will be paired with their preparatory sketches, and subsequent works by other artists made after them in continuation of the artistic conversations that occurred throughout the centuries. Frans Zaver Winterhalter, King Edward VII ( ), When Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, 1846, Royal Collection Trust/ Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2018 Childhood Now Sat 16 March Sun 16 June Furthering the conversation initiated in Painting Childhood, this sister-exhibition brings together the works of three contemporary figurative painters Chantal Joffe, Mark Fairnington and Matthew Krishanu. Drawn to the subject of children, each of these British artists depict childhood in very different ways. Fierce, tender and highly personal, Chantal Joffe s expressive paintings chart the growth of her daughter Esme from birth to adolescence, in relation to her own changing role as a mother. Mark Fairnington s approach turns a scientific eye to the depiction of his twin sons with hyperrealistic precision, while Matthew Krishanu s radiant paintings reveal memories of an exotic childhood in Bangladesh. Together, these three artists present fresh perspectives on what constitutes childhood today.
