8 Sam s O s editor shares what s on her mind this month. FROM DESK I WOULD LIKE TO share with you a piece of advice I stumbled across recently. It comes courtesy of Father of the Bride actor Steve Martin, who, when asked for tips on success, put forward what he calls his passion hypothesis, which I think is oddly refreshing. His contention is that people repeatedly tell you that the way to end up loving your career is to first figure out what you are passionate about, and then pursue it this has often been shortened to follow your passion. The danger with this idea, Martin says, is that it convinces you that there is a magic, right job waiting for you, and that if you find it, you will immediately be catapulted to career happiness. You ll realise this is the work you were meant to do. The problem comes in, he says, when you neglect to find this perfect fit and instead end up job-hopping, while racked with self-doubt. What does he suggest instead? Be so good they can t ignore you! The clarity this brought to his life enabled him to stop worrying about what his job was offering him, and instead focus on what he could offer the world. This mind-set, which I call the craftsman mind-set, allows you to sidestep the anxious questions generated by the passion hypothesis, like Who am I? or, What do I truly love? Instead, you can put your head down and focus on becoming valuable, Martin says. I was intrigued by this idea because I ve always believed that being so excellent that you can t be ignored forces you to take control of your life. Whichever way I look at it, that s good advice so here s to being excellent! The Best Piece of Advice I ve Received Recently I was chatting to Martha Beck before an O function last year, and I told her I had been struggling to find calm amid all the world s clutter. Her reply to me was simple and measured: Do only what brings you joy.
