2 Page 2 BY JIMINY Those of us in the Northeast living within easy driving distance of the coast were blessed this past winter. Unusually warm weather and little snow made trips to the salty brine a pleasant diversion in January and February. While gold and silver were always the goal other trinkets were far more common visitors to the old scoop. On one balmy Sunday while swinging away at Sassco Beach in Fairfield up in the scoop comes nothing other than a leather dog collar with rabies tags and town tag attached. Complete with Cricket s address and home phone number. Since no gold or silver decided to join us Cricket turned out to be the Find of the Day. Back home we dialed up the pooch only to get Cricket s Mom. She was a very gracious lady and was most pleased to learn that her pet s tags had been recovered. The next day via USPS off they went to Southport. A few days later a lovely note arrived in the mail thanking us for returning an item of treasure to someone we never met. Not as dramatic as returning a gold ring or an engraved watch but by Jiminy fulfilling none the less. 4 Page 4 Meeting Highlights Attendance at meetings has been bellow average for the year In an effort to keep members up to date with activities and discussions transpiring during these meetings a special HIGHLIGHTS section is being added to the Newsletter. February 2012: Special raffles and sales will be conducted during the year to raise approximately $ to offset increased cost of hunt sites. March 2012: The Club library has been reestablished at Sparkle Lake. ADT dues for 2012 are currently being accepted. Check Artifact Detecting Team web site for details. Club authorizes the expenditure of $35.00 to support a membership in Public Lands for the People (PLP). April 2012 Hunts planned for April and May April 1940 s Camp May 1800 s Stage Stop No September away hunt September outing tentative for Holmes, NY Kellyco repairing Minelab detectors Call Club obtains high end gold tester for member use. Electrolysis demonstration by Al Kontis for May meeting.
5 Page 5 New Additions No not a blessed event. The stork has long since ceased dropping bundles of Joy down our chimney. The Cub library has recently acquired, on loan, a copy of Swanson s Set Up & Sold Out. This is a must read for anyone interested in finding out some of the reasons gaining access to hunt sites is becoming more and more of a challenge. Readers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions but one may find that organizations which superficially appear to be on the side of freedom and outdoor recreation may be among detecting s worst enemies. The updated 3 rd addition will be available at the April meeting on a first come first out basis.

7 Page 7 Help Wanted As PWMDAS begins its search outing schedule for 2012 we do so for the second year in a row without a Site Coordinator (SC). This position has remained vacant since Rich Markert vacated the post to assume the duties of the Vice President.. Our failure to solidify the SC position has placed additional strain on the long serving members of the Board of Directors. The vitality and enthusiasm of PWMDAS relies heavily on the social and search activities which it provides its members. Sadly, it is unrealistic to expect a few individuals to continually supply the fuel for the continued acceleration of our Club s success. For the current year only one member has come forth with information which may eventually lead to a possible outing site. In retrospect the Finds of the Month competition routinely hosts recoveries that make the pages of Western and Eastern and American Digger. Obviously we have members who have mastered the art and science of site allocation. If every Club member obtained just ONE site for Club use we would have a NEW site for each hunt month for the next eight years! There must be someone out there who can step up and fill this position. Ask yourself this question: During the course of my membership in PWMDAS how many rings, coins, buttons, and buckles have I pocketed that I would not have found if it were not for a Club Hunt.? The answer, in all honesty, will likely be in the dozens. Providing ONE hunt site for the Club is little to pay for the success folks have gleaned from the efforts and generosity of others. If you were reading this in the NY Times the ad might read: WANTED Site Coordinator Self motivated individual with good communication skills. Own transportation a must. Willing to travel a plus. Able to work flexible schedule and arrange own hours. 10 years or more experience in metal detecting also a plus but not required. Goal oriented with top pay gained in satisfaction for having helped those who have helped before. The Club is blessed by having the financial resources to help leverage hunts in this bad economy.it is possible that this advantage may open up a site or two which an individual might not. be able to obtain on his own. Hints for success- do you read the newspaper, do you know someone in the volunteer fire department-any friends or family involved in fairs or carnivals-does your church have an acre or two of land associated with it-is your boss a member of a private beach club? How about an out of the way U -Pick Orchard, farms with a little fresh veggies sign or an abandoned field where you park to fish or hunt?
