1 News Volume 2, Issue 5 May, 2004 Orlando Museum Show Judging At May Meeting The Orlando Museum of Art has agreed to let the Florida Chapters of the AAW display the best turnings from each Florida Chapter during the entire month of July, There will be signs at the museum telling the people about the AAW national meeting at the Carib Royal Hotel on July 22, 23, and 25; in the hope that many of the people who see the art at the museum will be encouraged to come to the large display at the show. Our club will be allowed to display four items. The items submitted will be sent to Orlando in the second week of June. They will be returned in August after the end of the show. The will choose its representative pieces at our May meeting. Interested members should bring their entries to the May 22nd. meeting. A jury made up of qualified impartial judges will view the works and decide which four will best represent our club. Members may submit three pieces each for judging. No member of the may have more than one piece in the museum show. Therefore four turners will be represented in Orlando. At the turner s request items in the show may be sold by the Museum. The Turner should specify his price to which the museum will add its commission. 2 Page 2 Auction To Help Mounts Garden Each year at the time of the Friends of Mounts Gardens Show an auction is held to benefit the Garden. Proceeds from the auction are used to help defray the costs of operating the garden an conduct its programs. The benefits from our three yearly shows at Mounts. As a means of showing our appreciation for the opportunity to take part in the shows members are invited to donate a turning to the auction. If you have something you can donate contact Bob Brulotte. The auction will take place later this week so don t delay. Give Bob a call and help to show how much we appreciate News One of the primary purposes of the is to educate the public about woodturning. For the past six months Herb Cohen has been organizing educational programs for the. Herb s request for a grant from the AAW to conduct this work has been approved and the club will receive over $800 for this purpose. With assistance from Carl Schneider and Richard Chesler he has put on demonstration programs for the local Boys and Girls clubs of Palm Beach County. The final demonstration of the series if scheduled for Friday, May 21. The demonstrations have been received enthusiastically by both the Education Program Continues, Future Growth Seen youths and the leaders of the clubs. A group that puts on demonstrations for Four H clubs has contacted Herb to put on a program for their club members. The program would run in the summer of Herb would also like to put on a program of demonstrations for seniors involving visits to retirement communities and senior clubs. Members with leads to these sorts of organizations should contact Herb. Herb, Carl and Richard have done a tremendous job with this vitally important work, but they need your help. If you have a couple of free hours a month to help ensure the future of woodturning please contact Herb. (Continued from page 1) had approximately 50 attendees. Treasurer s report Richard Chessler was unavailable so no report was given. The figures from the April board meeting will be published. There will be some additional expenses for the Meet and Eat to be taken out of the balance. Committee reports Membership (John Buso - Membership Committee Chair) AAW membership forms were passed out and members were reminded that those dues are $35.00 per year. This is our parent organization with over 11,000 members worldwide. They published an excellent quarterly journal, an annual resource book and sponsor an annual symposium (this year s will be in Orlando). They April Meeting Minutes (continued) also provide a form of insurance coverage for protection against liability for any harm or injury done to a nonmember during a club sponsored demonstration. Palm Beach County Woodturners membership is $25.00 per year for a personal membership or $35.00 per year for a family membership. Throughout the year, we have monthly meetings and demonstrations, special presentations, workshops, shows and sales. In addition, we provide an excellent source of quality wood for our members. Programs (Carl Schneider - Programs Committee Chair) For our upcoming meeting demonstrations, Carl suggested that members show what they do best. For special presentations we will have a number of experienced demonstrators. Our June meeting will feature Betty Scarropino, and will include one or two days of hands-on workshops. Sign up sheets for this are in our newsletter and includes options for attending the demonstration and/or the handson session. Carl has arranged a number of special presentations for the rest of 2004 and into If you have any suggestions for programs that you would like to see at the meetings, please contact Carl. Shows (Bob Brulotte - Show Committee Chair) Anyone interested in participating in an upcoming show should take a few moments to speak to Bob. There was a show going on at Mounts Botanical Gardens on the day of our General Meeting (April 24 th ) and there will be another one there on the 22 nd and 23 rd of May. For these shows, members can bring pieces to show and/or sell. Fifteen percent of all proceeds go to the club Treasury... over $2,000 came from the Mounts shows last year. Future shows include one here at the Okeeheelee Nature Center in October and a major show at Mounts Botanical Gardens in November. We are looking to participate in the Orlando Museum of Art show that will be running at the (Continued on page 3)

3 Volume 2, Issue 5 Page 3 same time as the symposium. We are allowed to submit one piece per 15 members in the club. We will be allowed to submit the maximum, which is four pieces for our club. Members wishing to participate should bring three or four pieces of their best work to the May meeting for judging. Library (Bill Kruger - Librarian) Bill has been given a budget of a hundred dollars per month to add titles for our library. If you know something that you think would be of general interest to the club, please let Bill know. In addition to books and tapes, our library includes tools, lathes, chucks and live centers, all of which are available to loan to members. Workshops (Carl Schneider) The South County workshops are held in Dave Friedman s shop in Boynton Beach on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The weekly workshops at Dave s garage give our members access to three mini lathes and one of full-size lathe. They are also attended by older and experienced turners to assist and teach. If you are interested in participating in any of these workshops, please contact Carl Schneider. Discussion arose about the acquisition of a Powermatic model 3520A with a 20-in. swing. It should cost approximately $2, delivered. We would need to purchase a chuck with jaws for it. David Friedman has pledged $ as a down payment on at this machine. He will be selling some pieces of special wood from his April Meeting Minutes (continued) Stash to help finance the acquisition. A motion was made to purchase the machine by the end of April with $2, coming from the Treasury along with Dave s $ Fund raising will go forward afterwards to offset the costs. The motion was passed unanimously. The North County workshops are usually held on one Saturday each month, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Al Gruntwagin s. Please call Al if you are interested in attending. Newsletter / Website - (Brian Rosencrantz - Editor and Webmaster) If you have anything to sell, you can place a classified ad for free in the newsletter. If you have material for a project or an article, please submit it to Brian for inclusion on the website. Our web site address is Wood (Ralph Nettles - Wood Chairman) As a service to our members, people collect wood and make it available for sale to our members. The proceeds go to our treasury for the acquisition of books, tools and the like. Please show your appreciation by buying wood from time to time. It s a double benefit to you... you get good wood and you get tools and books that you can use. Education (Herb Cohen) Carl Schneider for Herb Cohen: We have done four demonstrations for the Girls and Boys Clubs of Palm Beach County, and an additional demonstration is scheduled for May 21 st. Anyone interested in volunteering to assist please let Herb know. There will be a meeting with the director of this organization to review the program and plan for the future. Plans are going forward for a program at the Armory Arts Center in West Palm Beach, to reach an audience of 11 to 12 year-olds. We are looking to invite 10 or 12 children to the Okeeheelee Nature Center, giving them the opportunity to turn on five mini lathes with members assisting them. Herb submitted an AAW educational grant request and it has been approved. Volunteers - consider putting in an hour or two each month to help out with the function of this club. Bring Back Raffle - Joe Hartman won a planter made by George Moskowitz. It was made of wood, leather and turned resin. from Oak (?) and a square form from mahogany with chainsaw marks on the edges. Demonstration The demonstration for this month was on two different bowl saver devices, given by Carl Schneider and Bud Escher. Mounts Field Trip, May 22 After completion of our regular meeting and the presentation of the gallery on Saturday, May 22 we will not have a demonstration as usual. Instead our membership will dismiss to travel to Mounts Botanical Garden on Military Trail to study tree recognition. We will gather there in the main parking lot and walk together through the garden. This will also be an opportunity see one of our shows in operation. At the garden we will see Mahogany, Maple, Oak, Citrus, Mango, Eucalyptus, Holly, Loquat, and many other species. We will study the leaf formation and arrangements, bark color and texture and branch alignment. We will also view fruits and flowers where applicable. Many of our members have requested help with identifying local tree species and this is an excellent opportunity to use the available resources to learn how to do just that.

8 Betty is most famous for her carving and for her use of bleaches and colorants in her woodturnings Sign up for: Registration Time Price Betty Scarpino Betty Scarpino started working with wood almost 30 years ago as an industrial arts major at the University of Missouri, Columbia, where she also studied sculpture. Her studio is located in her home. Betty's wood sculpture is widely collected, and she is represented in a number of private as well as public collections, such as Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, Detroit Institute of Arts and Yale University Art Museum. A number of museum catalogs, books, and articles on turned wood contain photos of her work. Betty has also written several articles about her work, the most recent appearing in Turning Points Magazine, Winter 2003, "Betty Scarpino: A Diaogue." Betty also teaches and demonstrates woodworking techniques, and she was recently an invited participant at the 2003 International Woodturning Symposium, held in Puy Saint- Martin, France. In March 2002, Betty gave a slide/talk presentation at the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, as part of the opening ceremony of the exhibition, "Wood Turning in North America Since 1930." Her Altered Plate, "The Most Indirect Route" is represented in that exhibition. "Today much of the more interesting work featured under the general heading of wood turning only begins at the lathe. That's especially true of the heavily carved turnings of... Betty Scarpino." -- Richard Raffan..
