2 Elvie O Hanlon Elvie lives in Ringwood now but spent most of her life in Asia. She was born in Manila, Philippines and has lived in many countries throughout Asia and the Middle East. India, in particular, provided a rich source of subjects and study opportunities and it was here that she developed her love of painting. Elvie works predominantly in oils. She attended Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, Central St. Martin s in London and Dubai Arts Centre in the United Arab Emirates. In the past, most of her works were in still life and figures. But since she attended Roger Dellar's courses (Royal Academy artist and tutor), she has started painting in landscape. Plein Aire paintings in Portugal, Venice and Crete have recently been completed. Her recent work the BEDOUIN shows the influence of the Middle East. Through her work, she illustrates the varied cultures of the countries she has lived in. Page 2 of 8

5 Leisure Painter & The Artist Art Club of the Year Competition We are inviting members to consider entering this competition. Clubs are invited to enter 5 of their members paintings. Full details are available in the current issue of Leisure Painter & The Artist magazines. Unfortunately they do not give details online. We have reproduced the advert here. Click on image for a larger version. First Prize is 500 worth of Jackson s art materials vouchers, a sponsored demonstration at the selected club venue by a professional art tutor and a profile about the club published in their magazines, online at PaintersOnline and through their social media channels. If you think the Ringwood Art Society should enter the competition or would like to submit a painting for consideration please our Programme Secretary at programme@ringwoodartsociety.org Visit to the Shell Art Collection at Beaulieu On a sunny autumn day 14 people were welcomed to Beaulieu by the curator of the collection, Nichola Balfour-Penny. We were taken to the building which has housed the collection since it was moved from Shell House in London. Nichola gave a talk, illustrated by slides, about the history of the collection. The earliest advertising was introduced in in the form of postcards. As motoring became more widespread the first posters were produced in a format to fit on the side of delivery lorries. With the proliferation of advertising, the company tried to project a responsible image by limiting it use of hoardings to its vehicles. The posters often featured women, at a time when they were still struggling to achieve the right to vote (granted in 1928). In the 1930s Jack Beddington became head of publicity for Shell. He employed a number of artists such as Paul Nash, John Piper, James Gardner and Graham Sutherland to produce artwork for Shell. He also worked with John Betjeman to produce the Shell guides to English Counties and a film unit was established to project a positive image of the company. Valentine cards were also sent to female customers until the 1970s. Next we visited the climate controlled store room where the collection is kept, (the club president Pam Mason-Smith becoming lost in the labyrinthine building on the way, until a search party retrieved her), and finally we visited the permanent exhibition in the main motor museum. All agreed it was a most interesting and informative afternoon as we thanked Nichola for her presentation and the time she dedicated to us. Page 5 of 8
