1 HANDLOOM EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCIL Fair report India International Handwoven Fair, Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai 16 th to 18 th February, 2011 Participation in trade fairs stimulates faster action in promoting sales abroad than other available avenues. The combination of an attractive exhibit and an enigmatic well-informed representative at a Trade Fair is almost unbeatable, irrespective of the event. This being the current scenario, HEPC in order to provide an opportunity to new and small entrepreneurs organized an exclusive fair for handloom products in Chennai from 16-18, February Indian Handlooms though part of many fairs was for the first time showcased exclusively at the India International Handwoven Fair. IIHF was organized under Market Access Initiative (MAI) Scheme of Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The fair was inaugurated by Smt. Rita Menon, I.A.S., Secretary, Ministry of Textiles at 11.a.m. on Secretary also launched the new logo of HEPC brought out in association with National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. A Fashion Show by Rehane was organized at 6.30 p.m. on Shri R. Rajagopal, Principal Secretary, Department of Handlooms, Handicrafts, Khadi & Textiles, Govt. of Tamil Nadu was the Chief Guest for the event. On , Bharathanatyam and Fusion dance was performed by Ms. Shobana at 6.30 p.m. Shri R.N. Choubey, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, was the Chief Guest for the event. After the programme, Prize Distribution function was held and Development Commissioner for Handlooms distributed awards for Best Designers and Best Stalls. The Council had set up a Theme Pavilion with the concept IIHF List of Exhibitors ( Stall wise) Modern Traditions.Natureally Handlooms, which showcased the entire range of products being sold. The products displayed by the exhibitors were home textiles, table linen, kitchen linen, bed linen, living room, outdoor linen, placemat, runner, cushion, mitten, potholder, apron, bread basket, glove, organic handwoven sarees, stoles, duppattas, ladies apparel, rugs, cotton mats & rugs, floor coverings, designer bags, jute shopping bags, linen & bamboo fabrics, decorative accessories, jute wall hangings, hotel slippers, portfolio bags, jute blended fabrics, beach bags, conference bags, laptop bags, handbags, pouches, folders, mull prints, silk fabrics, scarves, tassar silk saree, jute slippers, jute jewellery, lungies, dhoti, saree, shirting cloth, readymade shirts, handkerchiefs, canvas, tangail designed sarees, pinafore, bandage cloth, baby suits, fabrics dyed with ayurvedic medicines, bed & table range in Tassar silk & Ikat, handloom durries, doormats, beddings, bamboo mats, Eri silk dress materials and organic cotton hand spun &hand woven, naturally dyed stoles, scarves. Around 82 manufacturers/exporters from across the country and 50 buyers from countries such as Brazil, Japan, Italy, France, Ireland, Poland, Sweden, Nepal, Tajikistan, South Africa, Uganda, Spain Germany, U.S.A., Serbia, U.A.E., Indonesia, Kuwait, Bulgaria and Kazakhstan participated in the three-day fair. As per feedback report received from participants, business visitors have booked spot orders worth `1.60 crores, besides concrete enquiries to the tune of `7.20 crores. All the participants expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made by HEPC and wanted to repeat their participation in the next edition too. I have not seen such services being provided in any fairs that we go to in the world. All the members of the delegation from Yokohama India Centre have returned to Japan safe and sound and they asked me to convey their heartfelt gratitude for the courteous hospitality and kind assistance extended by you and other officers of HEPC during their stay in Chennai our members were able to find some items of their interests and so they will follow up the contacts made with the Indian companies concerned at the Fair by exploring the possibilities of introducing such items in the Japanese markets. - S. Rehane s fashion show was an inspiration and the Bharatnatyam performance - exceptional! As we know, you produce a lot of wonderful beautiful products with high quality in India. So we hope that more much number of Indian original handwoven products which you proud of to the world will be introduced next time. We are always happy to be informed whenever you have such fair not only in Chennai but also in the other cities in India such as New Delhi and Mumbai etc. - T. Koike, Japan. I am sure orders will soon be there, although such an excursive has longer term effects than just once off orders. The product range has to be broad-based with Handloom products from linen, silk etc. All sectors should participate and all aspects of Handlooms should be personified. - M/S. Handloom products from all over India to be displayed at the fair. M/s. Women weave Charitable Trust, Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh. This has been our first time participation in any event and the experience gained has been very insightful. SIPPO, Madurai, Tamilnadu. Though we were reluctant to participate in this event initially, we decided to participate only to support HEPC s maiden effort.
