1 February 01, 2010 Charity Fashion Show: What are you wearing? On Charity Fashion Show provided more than twenty models and production assistance for the WDesigns VENUS Runway Premiere. The collection, showed in an intimate invite-only setting at Roe Lounge in San Francisco, was a stunning array of handcrafted garments in bold reds, purples and blues offset by highlights of silver and grey Designer Wayne Hwang describes VENUS as translating his recent experiences as a Stanford graduate into a clothing line. Photo credit: Kris Cheng goddess of love and the modern, rock-chic appeal associated with the planet Venus. Given Hwang s past evening gown confections, this comes as no surprise. In addition to featuring twenty-five beautiful looks composed of micro-suede and taffeta, silk and chiffon, the VENUS premiere provided an exceptional opportunity for Charity Fashion Show models to strut their stuff and gain more runway experience. Charity Fashion Show staff members also served as the support team for WDesigns, managing the guest list, press, and models. Mikayla George, a sophomore at Stanford and one of Charity Fashion Show s most up and coming models, said the show was really awesome and well put together. It was a great opportunity and an honor to be picked for Wayne s sick nasty line, and the best part was discovering that my butt didn t actually fall out of my dress! In fact, every look presented by WDesigns was remarkably crafted, and though many of the pieces looked charmingly, impossibly attached to their models, each piece did, adding a magical air of fantasy and mystery. 1

2 This is particularly true of the Gentrix long gown, a lavender chiffon piece that seemed to almost float off of Charity Fashion Show model DeAnna Basques. Jessica Havlak, one of the Charity Fashion Show models who participated both in the VENUS premiere and in the WDesigns: Red photo campaign, told us that her favorite pieces were the Thunder Jacket/Cosmic Top combo, which she wore for the Red photoshoot, and the Volcanic jacket. I absolutely LOVE that jacket, she said. Wayne is lucky I didn t steal it after the show. Really, though, I love all his pieces original but still very wearable, and I love the color palette. I thought the show was really fun, I loved the music and that the style was more rock and roll. Overall, it s hard to call the WDesigns: VENUS premiere anything other than a complete success, both for designer Wayne Hwang and for the Charity Fashion Show staff and models who were a part of it. Annual Charity Fashion Show Valentine s Rose Fundraiser begins Valentine s Roses are hand delivered by CFS models Lovesick III Elemental fashion show by SJ Helium. Stay tuned for more information on an after party hosted by Charity Fashion Show Shanghai-based Dutch designer Tosca Soraya F/W 2010 preview exhibition. Who are those kids? Future Faces of Fashion strikes out on its own. Beyond making a monetary philanthropic contribution each year, Charity Fashion Show also focuses on specific youth arts initiatives in the Bay Area. As part of this, we run our own high school internship program entitled Future Faces of Fashion. In the fall, our twelve high school interns spent most of their program time becoming acquainted with CFS and the fashion world and determining exactly how they wanted to be involved. Now, working with their mentors, they re really starting to branch out on their own. These past few weeks, the interns were given the task of developing and executing their own practice studio shoot, and the girls were responsible for everything from picking clothes and a theme to hair and make up to photography Charity Fashion Show 2010 and afterparty. Coming up, our design interns get a chance to present sketches of the pieces they will be creating for Charity Fashion Show 2010 to the rest of the program. Name: Marcheta Marshall Hometown: All over the US and in Tokyo Favorite designer: Marchesa CFS Monthly (M): When did you know you wanted to be involved in fashion? Marcheta (K): The day I finally understood the words of Ralph Lauren: I don t design clothes, I design dreams. Clothing is so much more than just something to wear it can express emotion, promote creativity, or just make someone feel beautiful. M: Would you ever consider becoming a designer yourself? K: I actually just started my own apparel company called Orphia, selling high end shirts that I design. All the proceeds go to an orphanage for special needs kids in China. It s such an amazing experience to do something you love while helping others, and it s also allowed me to see how hard it is to design and sell a product. M: What inspires you, stylistically? K: I really love turquoise, coral, and white. I am inspired by the Greek Isles and Ancient Grecian style. I love vibrant pops of color set against a white background, and I gravitate towards items that look like they are from an open air island market, especially if they have jewel tones, beading and a boho vibe. M: Has there been anything unexpected about CFS? K: I hadn t realized beforehand how much work goes into putting on a large-scale fashion show. You need everything from skilled models to a runway, venue, and audience...oh, and clothing is always nice. It s hard work, but worth it when you think about the message Charity Fashion Show is spreading. M: Can you tell us a little about your work with the Future Faces of Fashion program? K: The FFF program is really developing. There s so much talent and potential to be found amongst our group of girls, and it s exciting that CFS can make a difference right here in the community as well as around the world through Kiva. 3

4 What s your story? Featuring model Julia Wycliff Name: Julia Wycliff Hometown: Houston, TX Favorite color: Royal blue CFS Monthly (M): Why model? Julia (J): I first knew that I was interested in fashion at a very young age because of my mother, who used to model in high school (she actually attended the same high school as Janice Dickinson!). Looking at her old pictures and playing dress up with her clothes was the beginning of my obsession with fashion. Considering the circumstances, it could have been a terrible experience, but it actually turned out to be one of the best weekends I ve had at Stanford thus far. M: What are you most looking forward to? J: The annual CFS photo trip to Vegas this March! The concepts for photos sound wonderful and I m excited to be a part of it. I had an absolutely fantastic time modeling for the WDesigns Venus Collection recently, and I am counting down the days til the big show in May! M: Who s your favorite designer? J: Betsey Johnson is definitely my favorite designer. She s got a very bold personality that translates well into the clothing and accessories she designs. M: What made you interested in working with CFS? What have you liked most about the experience so far? J: I became interested in working with CFS when I saw the advertisement featuring the Green Dress photo. I just wanted to be one of those girls. Last spring s show was the most intense experience I ve probably ever had. Having just seconds to change between sets was a huge challenge, but it was also a great bonding experience. CFS truly feels like a family to me now. M: What did you think of the Reno photo trip? J: That was such a bizarre trip! It included getting stuck in a major traffic jam for hours and shooting in a cold alleyway in a really Julia Wycliff in Vintage 4

What are you doing this Valentine s Day? This year, you could be getting wedding-quality Ecuadorian red roses hand delivered to your door by charming CFS model-cupids. If you re at Stanford, that is. February 2 nd, the annual Charity Fashion Show Valentine s Day Rose Fundraiser kicks off with the release of this year s VDay photo (except that you get a sneak peak of it first). All proceeds from the Rose Fundraiser directly support this year s beneficiary, Kiva. While Charity Fashion Show is only able to deliver roses to residences on the Stanford campus, anyone else can pick up roses from us on Saturday, February 13 th for $4 each or $36 per cellophane-wrapped dozen, a 25% discount per rose.
