5 KIS KERATIN INFUSION SYSTEM The brand Kappers was launched in the Netherlands in The idea behind this hair care line was to provide professional salons with high-quality products at an attractive price. The products furthermore had to tie in with the specific needs and methods of individual professional hair salons. The brand has by now widely proven that it can provide added value. 6 ABOUT DAMAGE AND REPAIR Human hair is made up of three elements: keratin proteins, minerals and moisture.research has shown that moisture gathers in places where keratin proteins have disappeared from the hair. This not only makes the hair heavier, it also weakens it. The hair loses elasticity, tensile strength and volume, becomes brittle and splits easily. A good example is bleached hair. The chemical process that is involved in bleaching hair does not only take the pigment out of the hair, but also makes the keratin disappear. This damages the hair. Moisture will automatically fill up these vacant spaces in the hair. So even though the hair has soaked up a lot of moisture, it will still feel dry. This is caused by the outer layer of the hair being damaged. REPAIR In damaged hair the balance between proteins and moisture has been offset. The only way to repair damaged hair and restore the moisture balance, is to add precisely the material that is a key element in hair; hair keratin proteins. The keratin that is added to the hair will fill up the porous areas in the hair. Without addition of keratin, hair repair is virtually impossible. By adding keratin, the hair gains in strength and increases its elasticity, which boosts the hair s volume. 8 KEEPITSIMPLE Despite the extensive assortment, the KIS line is still very easy to use. In order to keep things simple, you should adhere to the following instructions in every treatment. Check the state of the scalp and the hair prior to treatment. Does your customer have any scalprelated problems? If so, simply kick off the treatment with a phase 1 product (see below). The KIS line offers two shampoos and a treatment for this phase. Then check the condition of the hair. If the hair is damaged, start the treatment with a phase 2 product. The line offers shampoos and treatments with two different objectives; one to make the hair stronger, and one to make it softer. Phase 3 is intended for healthy hair. The line provides caring shampoos and conditioners for that. Phase 1: dealing with scalp problems KeraClean Volume Shampoo and KeraScalp Healing Shampoo/Revitalizer have been devised to tackle skin problems, such as excess sebum, dandruff, scales etc. Phase 2: dealing with hair problems KeraMax Shampoo and KeraMax Treatment contain a maximum of keratin that helps reconstruct the hair from the inside, so that the moisture content is brought back to normal levels, which leads to the best possible repair of the hair. 10 ABOUT HAIR BACKGROUND AND THEORY HAIR STRUCTURE Human hair is made up as follows: Microfibrils Macrofibrils Cortex Cuticle CUTICLE (LAYER OF SCALES) The hair s outer layer consists of overlapping flat cells or scales. These scales, arranged like roof tiles, provide a protective layer around the hair. A healthy hair has a smooth, continuous layer of scales. The hair shines and is easy to brush. CORTEX (LAYER OF FIBERS) The middle layer of the hair is made up of elongated, spiral-shaped cells. These cells give the hair its elasticity and strength. The cortex has a natural balance between moisture and proteins. When this balance - which is different from one person to the next - is offset (for example, due to exposure to heat or chemical processes such as perming or colouring), the hair will lose its elasticity and will be harder to style. MEDULLA (MARROW OR AIR CHANNEL) This inner layer in the hair does not serve a cosmetic purpose. The hollow medulla does, however, serve as a kind of drain pipe of the body. Waste from the body gathers here; if too much waste mounts up here, the medulla will discharge the waste into the cortex. These waste substances will then settle among the keratin in the hair. Note: this can affect the effectiveness of chemical processes on the hair, such as perming and colouring!! 6 Handbook KIS 2016

11 THERE ARE AS MANY HAIR TYPES AS THERE ARE PEOPLE Hair s original purpose was to protect the skin. The degree of protection required depends on the climate. And seeing as climates differ greatly on our earth, we can find different hair types in different geographical regions. In a multicultural society like ours, this means you can have any of these hair types walk into your hair salon. And seeing as you want to provide your customers with quality, it is important that you can give every customer, regardless of their hair type, personal and tailored hair advice. European, Asian and African hair types are very different. The following chart shows that this difference is mainly determined by the balance between protein and moisture in the hair. Europe Asia Africa Proteïn: 89% 94% 85% Moisture: 10% 5% 14% Minerals: 1% 1% 1% COSMETIC VERSUS ACTUAL HAIR REPAIR: THE DIFFERENCE KIS products contain hair keratin proteins that are the same as those in human hair. This means that these proteins are the same as our hair where the structure is concerned. Thanks to their low molecular weight (of MW 150) they can be absorbed by the hair in their entirety. Scientific research has shown that only molecules with a weight of up to mw 300 can penetrate the hair. Larger molecules merely attach a cosmetic layer around the hair, without actually repairing it. These therefore do not help the elasticity and strength of the hair. European hair care products work this way. The layer around the hair might make the hair look better, but it also makes the hair heavier and weaker. 12 THIS IS HOW PROTEIN WORKS IN TRADITIONAL PRODUCTS: Proteins that are added to the hair through a traditional hair care product have a positive charge. Damaged parts of the hair, on the other hand, have a negative charge. They therefore attract the protein molecules like a magnet. Their heavy molecular weight, however, impedes them from penetrating into the hair. They attach themselves to the outer layer of the hair shaft, and fill any porous areas there. This makes it easier to comb the hair, gives a temporary gloss, and makes it look healthier. This superficial, cosmetic coating is, however, removed as soon as the hair is washed using shampoo. This allows these proteins to actually penetrate the hair, and rebuild it using natural hair materials. Apart from making the hair healthier and stronger, it also lays a perfect foundation for possible subsequent treatments: perms will have better elasticity and tensile strength, colours will be brighter, cover better and last longer. 13 PH VALUE Another decisive aspect for hair s health is the ph value. The ph value identifies the degree of acidity or alkalinity. The ph scale runs from 0 to 14, with ph 7 being ph neutral. The natural ph value of hair is between 4.5 and 5.5. At this value, hair is at its strongest and has optimum elasticity, shine and flexibility. Skin is at its softest and smoothest with this ph value. KIS products have been composed in such a way that they tie in with the natural ph value of hair and skin. 14 HOW TO COME TO INDIVIDUAL AND TAILORED ADVICE GAIN YOUR CUSTOMER S TRUST Ask the right questions to get an idea of your customer s wishes and expectations. Listen closely. That way you will show that you are interested and understand what your customer wants. That way you will instill trust and make your customer feel at ease quicker. MAKE A PERSONAL DIAGNOSIS Make an extensive analysis of the hair (condition, current style, texture, length, original and current colour, grey percentage) and the type (shape of the face, complexion, eye colour). Also enquire after your customer s lifestyle, if possible. This can help you come to a suitable style and colour. TIP: try taking a fresh look at your customer every time he/she comes in, and try to come up with new possibilities every time. That way you will avoid always presenting your customer with more of the same and eventually chasing him/ her out of your salon. PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT THE TREATMENT AND THE PRODUCTS THAT WILL BE USED Merely asking whether your customer wants a colour, perm or treatment, is not enough. Explain the benefits of a product, and what additional result your customer can expect from that product. SUMMARIZE WHAT YOU DISCUSSED Tell the customer again what treatment you will be carrying out, and what products you will use. This reassures the customer, and helps avoid unpleasant misunderstandings. 10 Handbook KIS 2016

15 KERATININFUSIONTREATMENT One of the key aspects of KIS is the Keratin Infusion Treatment, a repairing treatment that consists of 5 steps. This treatment helps you provide your customers with the best possible and unique service. The treatment restores the moisture/protein balance - i.e. the quality - of the hair in about 15 minutes, and prepares it for possible subsequent chemical treatment. That way you create a healthy basis that will ensure that colours and perms retain their colour longer. The treatment adds hair proteins, which are equal to those in human hair, to the hair. These proteins have a molecular weight of 150, which makes that they can penetrate deep into the hair and cling to the hair s core permanently. But how can we determine what exactly the hair needs, and what steps are required to give the hair what it needs? Your knowledge of protein and moisture are the starting point here. Our advice? Do the tensile strength test! THE TENSILE STRENGTH TEST The tensile strength test is done to check the balance between protein and moisture in the hair. Healthy hair can stretch out about 25%. When there is a lot of moisture in the hair - i.e. a shortage of protein - this will be over 25%. In case of the opposite - i.e. too much protein and not enough moisture - the hair will stretch less than 25%. So the tensile strength test will help you identify what the hair needs. And the Keratin Infusion Treatment then enables you to take the appropriate steps to restore the right balance. M P M P tensile strength ± 25% Equal quantity of protein (P) and moisture (M): the hair is healthy. M P tensile strength > 25% Excess moisture (M), little protein (P) = too much stretch > add protein. 16 HOW TO USE THE TENSILE STRENGTH TEST The tensile strength test is accomplished by using 4 to 5 hairs between the thumb (of your right and left hand) and forefinger with a distance of approximately 4 cm. Healthy hair will stretch at this distance one centimeter (25%) and springs back to its original length. Hair with a lack of moisture will not stretch and hair with a lack of protein will stretch very easily from the hair and bounces not or difficult back. Tip: the result of the tensile strength test is most reliable when you first wash the hair with KeraClean Volume Shampoo. This shampoo removes product build-up. If you choose to wash the hair with another shampoo, it might influence the tensile strength test, and you probably will choose a wrong treatment for the hair. Note: Don t be fooled by how the hair feels. When hair has been bleached, pigments and keratin have been removed from the hair through the oxidation process. Moisture has filled up these empty spaces. But the hair still feels dry. This is because the scales on the outside of the hair are damaged. The right diagnosis in this case is to add keratin to the hair to rebuild it. An acidy product will make that the layer of scales closes itself. Using a shampoo for dry hair would have a contrary effect. WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF LOW MOISTURE OR PROTEIN LEVELS? You first washed the hair using KeraClean Volume Shampoo and subsequently performed the tensile strength test. But how do you identify the next four steps towards providing the hair with the right treatment? The following chart outlines what treatment the hair needs in case of a shortage of protein or moisture. Step 1 KERACLEAN VOLUME SHAMPOO Wash the hair thoroughly and let the shampoo set for 2-3 minutes (the crackling sound indicates that the shampoo is removing foreign substances from the hair). Subsequently rinse the hair and dry it with a towel. DO THE TENSILE STRENGTH TEST! Proceed - depending on the result - with the following steps: 12 Handbook KIS 2016

17 Tensile strength test result: Protein required! Step 2 KERABOOST INFUSION (perfect before colouring or perming hair) Spray onto towel dry hair 15 x, do not rinse. Step 3 KERAMAX TREATMENT Apply an abundant quantity of the product to the hair and let it set for 3-5 minutes, rinse it out well, and dry the hair with a towel. Tip: also perform a tensile strength test after step 3 of the Keratin Infusion Treatment. This will tell you whether steps 2&3 have to be repeated to further restore the natural moisture/protein balance. After step three a chemical treatment can be applied! Step 4 KERABALANCE ACIDIFIER (perfect after a colour or perm) Apply onto towel dry hair 20 x, apply evenly and comb it into the hair with a fine-tooth comb. Let it set for 3-5 minutes, rinse carefully and dry with a towel. Step 5 KERASHIELD LEAVE-IN Take some product in your hand, a blob the size of a pearl. Make your other hand wet and rub both hands together and apply to the hair. Do not rinse. Tensile strength test result: Moisture required! Step 2 KERAMOIST SHAMPOO Wash the hair and let the shampoo do its work for a short while (this will lay the foundation for the best possible absorption of extra moisture). Subsequently rinse the hair and dry it with a towel. Step 3 KERAMOIST TREATMENT Apply an abundant quantity of the product to the hair and let it set for 3-5 minutes, rinse it out well, and dry the hair with a towel. Tip: also perform a tensile strength test after step 3 of the Keratin Infusion Treatment. This will tell you whether steps 2&3 have to be repeated to further restore the natural moisture/protein balance. After step three a chemical treatment can be applied! Step 4 KERABALANCE ACIDIFIER (perfect after a colour or perm) Apply onto towel dry hair 20 x, apply evenly and comb it into the hair with a fine-tooth comb. Let it set for 3-5 minutes, rinse carefully and dry with a towel. Use KeraGlide Detangler when the hair has a lot of knots. 19 Keratin Infusion Treatment, step 1 KERACLEAN VOLUME SHAMPOO Cleans intensively Neutralizes Pre-treatment for any chemical treatment ph WHAT IS IT? This first step of the Keratin Infusion Treatment rids the hair of all remaining styling products, excess sebum (grease), chemical build-ups and products that do not belong in the hair. KeraClean Volume Shampoo neutralizes minerals and chlorines, and cleans the hair intensively, without damaging the cuticle or other parts of the hair, resulting in lasting volume. Does not affect the colour, thanks to the ideal ph value of Very suitable as body wash for greasy skin. Motto for step 1 is: first remove all substances from the hair that should not be there, then rebuild the hair from scratch. HOW TO USE IT Massage a small quantity into wet hair and let it foam. Repeat this treatment when you do not get enough foam. Let it set for 3 minutes. The crackling sound indicates that the shampoo is working: all excess substances are removed. Subsequently rinse the hair and dry it with a towel. Proceed with step 2. KeraBoost Infusion is a very concentrated mixture of keratin amino acids with a molecular weight of 150, combined with cationic enzymes. These rebuild the hair from the inside, and restore its natural strength. This will ensure that possible hair colour and other chemical treatments retain their colour longer. HOW TO USE IT Spray KeraBoost Infusion onto towel dried hair (don t be shy): the hair is repaired directly in the places you spray it onto. Start with the most porous areas and then treat the rest. Do not rinse! Proceed to step 3 after this. A fast-penetrating, protein-introducing, constructive treatment for permed, coloured or damaged hair. KeraMax Treatment contains the highest concentration of keratin and a select combination of herb extracts. These have a repairing effect on the hair. HOW TO USE IT Put a quantity the size of a Euro coin in the palm of your hand, and rub it into the hair, working it in from the end of the hair down to the root. Let it set for 5 minutes, rinse the hair and dry it with a towel. This acid-based treatment is used to close the cuticle and to accompany prior treatments. It restores the ph value, neutralizes alkaline values and perm odors. It prevents the hair from breaking, and makes sure that colour and perm are retained longer. This treatment restores the hair s natural condition: strong, healthy and glossy. HOW TO USE IT After rinsing step 2 and step 3 (KeraBoost Infusion & KeraMax Treatment): dry the hair with a towel and apply an abundant amount of product onto the hair. 26 HOW TO NEUTRALIZE COLOURS If you want to change the colour of hair, you need to know all about colour neutralization. Take a look at Figure C (tertiary colours), and see which colours influence each other. The colours that are opposite to each other, neutralize each other. The importance of this knowledge is, for example, shown by hair bleaching. Every shade can require another correction colour (see correction chart). Note: when using several tints, first mix the colours and then add KIS OxyCreme! Tip: stick to the 12 rule when mixing in mixing tints. 29 HOW TO COLOUR HAIR First time (on untreated hair): apply the colour onto the lengths and ends and work it in down to the root. Time to settle: minutes. Then gently massage the hair with water to remove the colour from the scalp. Add a small quantity of hot water, emulsify it and rinse it thoroughly. Wash the hair with the right KIS shampoo en then treat it with KeraLock Acidifier and KeraShield Leave-In. HOW TO USE A DEMI-PERMANENT COLOURING A demi-permanent colouring can only be used when there is no grey percentage in the hair. Use as a toneon tone colouring, when the hair colour is similar to the desired colour or when the desired colour is (max.) 2 tones darker than the base colour. MIXTURE RATIO DEMI-PERMANENT COLOURING = 1:1 For example: 50 ml KeraCream Color + 50 ml 1,9% KIS DMI Lotion HOW TO TREAT REGROWTH Minimum loss of colour: only apply colour to the regrowth areas and let it set for minutes. Subsequently treat the lengths and ends and let it set for 5-10 minutes (when using High Lift Super Lighteners, only treat the regrowth). Average loss of colour (colour is 1-2 shades lighter): apply colour to the regrowth, and mix it with a new colour with 3% right away and apply to the lengths and ends immediately. Time to set: minutes. Maximum loss of colour (3 or more shades lighter) and colour correction (light to dark): in this case you should first repair the removed pigments. This is done as follows: apply 8FG + 3% onto the lighter parts of washed (towel dry) hair, let it set for minutes, then wash it out using KeraMax Shampoo, dry the hair apply the desired colour + 3% onto the coloured hair. 30 HOW TO COVER GREY HAIR For the best possible grey coverage, add a tint from the natural series N/0 to the desired colour. Thanks to the high colour pigment percentage, KeraCream will cover grey hair in almost all cases by adding 4-6 cm natural tint to the fashion tint. The Keratin Infusion System in KeraBlond provides maximum protection and strengthening for the hair during the bleaching process. A special blue tint prevents unwanted colour temperature and guarantees clear blond tints. KeraBlond bleaches hair up to 7 shades lighter. Suitable for a diversity of techniques, ranging from traditional highlights to trendy blond accents. Note: when the bleaching agent comes into contact with the skin, you should not use more than 6% OxyCreme! HOW TO BLEACH USING KERABLOND Put 50 gr KeraBlond in a non-metal tray. 34 If you want to colour the hair lighter, mix the decolouring then as follows: 50 gr KeraBlond + 25 ml hot water + 25 ml 6% OxyCreme + 25 ml KeraClean Volume Shampoo. First apply this to the darkest part and then to the remainder of the hair. Rinse the hair as soon as the right shade has been achieved (see table), and wash the hair using KeraMax Shampoo. Treat the hair before colouring it again, for which you could use KeraBoost Infusion and KeraMax Treatment. COLOUR CORRECTION WITH A DEMI-PERMANENT COLOURING To correct the colour after using the KeraBlond or another lighter colouring, you can use the DMI-permanent colouring in combination with the desired KeraCream Color corrector. THE MIXTURE RATIO= 1:2 For example: 25 ml KeraCream Color + 50 ml 1,9% KIS DMI Lotion IMPORTANT! Prior to decolouring always first check the condition of the hair thoroughly. Check elasticity, texture and damage. Do not decolour if the hair or scalp are damaged or irritated! HOW TO USE KERARED KeraRed contain the best ingredients that guarantee the optimum contrasting locks and 100% security in only 15 minutes. This also goes for hair that was coloured black. The gellike mixture can be processed easily and is suitable for any traditional bleaching method. HOW TO COLOUR HAIR USING KERARED Mix KeraRed 1:2 with 6% OxyCreme (10 gr KeraRed : 20 ml OxyCreme) until you get a homogenous mass. Apply the mixture onto aluminum foil (or another material) using a paint brush. Total setting time with foil: no longer than 15 minutes. Thorough rinsing using KeraMax Shampoo. Carefully pat the rods dry using a towel or tissues. Carefully remove the rods after 5 minutes and fixate for 3-5 minutes using the remaining fixation. Carefully rinse the hair for 3 minutes with hot water.
