Q I never thought the aging process would bother me much, but besides wrinkles, I never realized how much these brown spots would affect my self-confidence. 8 8 Hello everyone, Staying organized can be very hard, especially if you have a busy home. Here are a few tips to help you keep the clutter to a minimum this year! In the kitchen Make sure all dishes are in the sink or dishwasher before you leave in the morning. Keeping your counters clear of clutter will create the illusion of a clean kitchen, even if your sink is full. In the bathroom Try to keep items off the counter and put them in drawers if you run out of space. Not to mention, if you do run out of space for your bathroom essentials, chances are you have more than you need. In the bedroom Clean out the closets seasonally and get rid of items that no longer fit you properly. Rather than keeping extra clothing around until it fits again, wear what makes you feel good in the moment and donate clothing you no longer need. In the garage Keep items on shelves rather than using floor space, or try installing hooks on the roof so you can store seasonal items on the ceiling. In the living room Make sure you keep things tidy. 9 Ask Norma 9 Norma has been working as Dr. Lycka s accountant for over 12 years and has become our resident pastry expert. Quick & Easy Taco Soup We re really feeling the winter chill, aren t you? Now that the holidays have come and gone, January can feel especially dreary and many of you have asked what I like to make on those chilly evenings. Why not warm up your bellies with a hearty bowl of taco soup? PREP TIME: 30 minutes TOTAL TIME: 30 minutes WHAT YOU LL NEED: 1½ lbs. ground beef ½ onion, chopped 28 oz. can diced tomatoes (undrained) 15 oz. can corn (undrained) 8 oz. can tomato sauce 1 small can black or kidney beans (optional) 1 cup water 1 envelope taco seasoning Salt/pepper to taste Tortilla strips Cheddar cheese, grated HOW TO MAKE: 1. Brown ground beef in a large skillet until crumbly 2. Add onion, sauté until softened 3. Add remaining ingredients in a large pot or crock pot 4. Cook in pot until boiling; cook in crock pot on high for 1 hr. and on low for 4 hr. 5. Serve topped with tortilla chips and grated cheese 6. 11 Sun Safety PRESENTED BY 11 Early Detection Saves Lives Sometimes it can be trickier to spot irregular lesions or moles on the skin in the winter since we are always so bundled up in layers; however, it is very important to check your skin for potential skin cancers year-round. The ABCDEs of Early Detection ASYMMETRY Shape is a key indicator for irregular moles, so watch for asymmetrical moles that differ in shape, as they could be abnormal and possibly pre-cancerous. BORDER Keep an eye on borders! If your mole has uneven edges, it could be cancerous. Smooth edges typically indicate normal moles. COLOUR If your mole is one shade of brown all over, it s likely safe; however, if your mole is two or more shades of red/brown, have Dr. Lycka take a look at it. DIAMETER This just means keep an eye on your mole s size. Keep in mind that if your mole is larger than 6 mm, it is suspicious. At the same time, some skin cancers can be smaller, so be sure to assess all signs of abnormalities not just diameter. EVOLUTION Self-assessments are important, as you can track the evolution of your moles over time. Changes within weeks can indicate skin cancer, so monitor your moles monthly and keep an eye out for the ABCDEs of early detection.
