Figure (1.1): Historical salon hair dryers Definition of the Project Historical Background The beauty centre is a department that people can make new looks, or take care of themselves. Generally, the beauty centre is an establishment where hair styling, hair cutting, waxing, facials, pedicure, manicure, and massage are done. The beauty centre can be called beauty salon, or beauty parlor. This place can be for both male, and female. When we back to the history, we can find that the idea of beauty centre is not a new one. Also, we can find that the hair styling and cutting tools have been found since 3500BC in ancient history. Shampooing the hair was not familiar to the people until Edwardian Era start. In the late of 1800s, hair salons started to be opened around the world. At that time, salons was detached from barber shops and provide a centric place for women to get their hair cut, or styled. In 20 th century, cosmetology centre expand to include skincare, hair cutting, hair styling, and other beauty and health processes. During that century, lots of beauty tools, and techniques were developed according to advanced technology. The British people were the first people improving the hair styling techniques. Nowadays, the hairdressing becomes more relaxing to the people when we compare it to the blood-letting barbers, or to the French crafters. Going back to the ancient Egyptians, the hair of upper class people were clipped close to the head, so they can wear the fancy wigs, especially when they have ceremonies. The Egyptians beauty salons were located in the palaces of the noble and rich people. About the ancient Rome,

the Romanian people were copycats of Greek in their wearing, and hair styling, and few of the women were dyed their hair blond color, or wore fancy wigs like the Egyptians. During this period of time, the Ancient beauty salons were ornate, and elaborated in their interior design. In the Middle East countries, such as; India, China, and Japan, the people were going to salon bathhouses, where they can wash their hair with henna rinse. So, in general each country had its own hair style to follow. The main founder of Beauty Corporation was known as Elizabeth Arden. Elizabeth used modern mass of marketing techniques to bring her beauty products to the public. Moreover, she opened number of beauty salons, and spas. She was originally from Britain, and she moved to New York City to work as a helper in cosmetic shop, and then as a partner in beauty salon. During 1909, she started her own business in opening separated beauty salon for herself. After that, she started to sell her own cosmetic products. In 1914, she started to expand her work under her name. During 1922, she opened her first beauty salon in France, then moving to European market. In 1934, she transformed her summer home into the main chance beauty spa. Then she expands her spa work nationally, and internationally. Elizabeth was responsible for establishing make-up as day like image for women. There are many types of beauty salons, which can have different services for the customers. 12 Commercial Design (Modern Beauty centre). Description of the project Location This Beauty centre will be located in Saudi Arabia, near to Al-Khobar beach. The reason behind choosing this place is that the beach will give the space more relaxing, and comfort to the people. Also, the beach location will attract the people to visit our beauty salon. In addition, there are many other benefits for choosing this beauty centre near the beach. First of all, the sea water, and the sea air are good for the human soul. Secondly, sea water can help people promote health for their bodies. Thirdly, fresh air can help people feel relaxed. These reasons inspired me to choose the right concept for my project, which will be the beehive. Since, the beehive honey can be used as mask for the body facials. Components The beauty centre will contain los of functions to help people take care of themselves. The main components are the reception, waiting area, waxing, facials, massage, pedicure, manicure, hair keratin, make-up, hair styling, public toilets, staff toilets, and hair cutting. These functions will be located in the ground floor. Other services like cafeteria, gym, and prayer room will be located in the first floor. All these treatments are very helpful to the people to be more relaxed, and feel comfortable. Users This beauty centre will be used by the beauty centre staff, and customers. The customers will be either adults, or children. This place will serve all types of classes, because the prices in this beauty centre will depend on the client s need, and demand. Significance Economic Point of View

Having this beauty centre located near to the beach will help the client s to be attracted to this place, which will help the number of customers to be increased. According to that, the Saudi economy will be increased, as well. Having a cafeteria, and shop that can be rented by other people inside this beauty salon can help the income to be increased. Then it can be developed to include other treatments, functions, or even shops. Later on, this beauty centre can have more than one branch in Saudi Arabia, which will help its economy to be increased. Society point of View Having a beauty salon is good project to help people who want to be pampered, taken care of relaxed, and feel comfortable. Beauty salons can offer the health for the people bodies. Also, it will pay attention to the body details in order to make the people unique in their look. Each of the beauty centre treatments has its own benefits on the people body. So, gathering all of them in one place will be easier for the people to be taken care of. Also, having a gym inside this beauty centre will benefit the people to take care of their fitness. Moreover, the massage treatments will help the people to vent out the stress, and pressure. Methodology There are many methods could be used in this research. First of all, using the proper websites that are related to the salons designs. Secondly, using the accurate books that had the beneficial information of beauty centre designs. Thirdly, making many literature case studies of beauty centre designs. Moreover, making many live case studies that can help me know more about the perfect relationships for the functions that could be available in the place I want to design. Also, finding the accurate space relationship that can go with this project. In addition, gathering the information that could help me to design accurate beauty centre. Finding the accurate dimensions that could go with the beauty centre design. These methods can make my research strong enough to design an attractive place for the visitors, which is the beauty centre in this case. Project Goals My goal of opening this beauty centre is to educate the customers about how many facets of the people appearance can help them to have a better look, and image. The beauty centre offers,

and treatments can make the customers take care of themselves, feel more relaxed, more comfortable, and their mood could be changed to the best. Also, other goal is to enhance the income of the country. Moreover, it can improve the people health. Generally, designing a beauty centre that has a luxury designs can attract the customers to visit the place. Challenges faced in the Research During this research, I found many difficulties. One of these difficulties is searching for an accurate plan that can go with designing such a commercial space like the beauty centre. Secondly, searching for the proper dimensions that can be used in designing the beauty centre functions. Also, finding enough information for that help me make strong research.

Figure (3.93): Upholstery Fabric Figure (3.92): Woven Fabric Notes: You can select any materials, and finishes for the beauty salon interior design. For the comfort of the stylist, a specially designed floor pad is used in the stylist s station around the stylist s chair. Mirrors in Beauty Centre can create the illusion on increased space in small shops. Mirrors should be placed carefully to avoid the reflection of clientele in areas such as pedicure stations. For Flooring finishes, carpet is rarely used, because of several reasons: It is difficult to maintain The stains, chemicals, and cut hair are some of the problems that make carpeting difficult material for the beauty salon. Materials and Finishes samples: This fabric is 100% cotton woven fabrics which is made of natural color cotton after early stage refining treatment to blend with white cotton This fabric is safe, healthy, and easy of purchase. It is made of cotton mixed with wool (natural materials)

It is available in many colors, and patterns This material is easy to be done. It could have many colors, and it could be stamped with any design. It is made of concrete material itself Indoor Air Quality The beauty salon should have good ventilation to take out the bad smells from the coloring, styling, and manicure areas. Because most of the products that are used in the beauty salon are containing many VOC s (Volatile Organic Compounds) from these chemicals. So, we should remember to make ventilation inside the space, such as; using natural ventilation like the windows.

Lighting Specifications Generally, lighting levels should be chosen to ensure the proper functional levels at many stations at salons. The lamps should not affect the color tones of customers skin and hair. Color analysis of customers hair, complexion, clarity in products interpretation and easy viewing for the products are impacted by the lighting plan design. While designing the beauty salon, we should specify lighting that gives the natural feeling as much as possible. Place the lighting on the sides of mirrors will make counteract the direct downward shadow, which is not good for the facial features Lighting should be clear, and natural. To do the perfect lighting, the interior designer should use four types of lighting. First of all, the diffusion light which is indirect lights that is located behind something translucent. The second source of light is the dimming, which are bright light. It can be used to cast dark shadows that can affect the appearance of the color itself. It is better to use small lighting fixture to keep the amount of light low. Thirdly, using the sun light, which can be diffused by atmosphere? Using large windows or skylights are good option to get enough sunlight inside the space. Fourthly, supplemental lighting, which should not be overhead, because it causes the shadows on the stylist, or the customer. For wash areas, we should use the directed lighting fixtures. Fifthly, the bulbs, which can provide better color spectrum. That is why; most of beauty salon uses the halogen bulbs. Each area has its own lighting considerations. First of all, the reception should use the direct down light, and the focal light to attract the customers to the reception desk. The lobby and waiting area should have ambient light (general light) for the visitors to see each other, and task light to make them able to read the magazines. The coffee shop should use the accent light to attract the visitors, focal lighting on the service counter, ambient (general) light to make the visitors able to see, and the decorative light above the café tables. The corridors should use the recessed light, and wall luminaries. The office lighting should be general light, task light on top of the office desk, and the conference table should have lights above it to make things clearer. The toilet should use ambient, and mirror lighting (located on the sides of toilet mirrors). The makeup area should use ambient and direct light near the mirror for more clearance. The massage, waxing, and facial care rooms should use the ambient light, and accent light on walls. Shampoo area should use direct light. Manicure area should have task light on tables to

make the clearance clear for the visitors. Pedicure area and hair styling areas should use the accent light especially on walls to make the workers do their job better, and ambient light for general seen. In addition, we should remember to use the emergency lighting in front of the emergency exit door to be clear to the customers. What is the affect of using the direct overhead (spot lights or canned lights)?? The uses of spot lights or canned lights are usually avoided in areas such as hair coloring, because they are not flattering. 109 Color Study Generally, colors are created by the shop owner s and the target market of customers in mind. The beauty centre colors should be luxury and calm. We should remember that the color scheme must affect the customer s appearance while receiving treatments. In the large-volume areas, such as; walls which have been assigned with highvalue neutral colors or pale tones. In this case, there will be no additional reflection of the color on the customer s hair. Many beauty salons use the accent tones of colors in non treatments areas in order to create the contrast in mood, or to promote a specific color scheme that is associated with the salon. Color scheme should reflect current trends within the space while ensuring that dominant colors do not overwhelm the neutral color or non color of walls, and flooring. The interior designer should pick the colors that are not too bold, and too dull, but choose the colors that are pleasant that will not overpower the interior design. Those colors should enhance the effect of lighting. About the ceiling, the color schemes are the charcoal colors, or other deep toned colors if the ceiling is high. Moreover, other treatments could be used, as well. While designing the beauty salon, we should remember that the customers are focus on the ceiling. So, generally; each area of the beauty salon could have any color according o the owner s opinion, and mood they want to create. Colors samples:

But at the same time, we should consider the workers, and customers circulation. For the employees, the traffic should be usage and flexible which can be called Profit zones or treatments rooms For the customers, the areas should be comfortable, which can be called Comfort zones. 116 Figure (3.120): Electrical outlet sample Electrical Outlets The electrical outlets are very important in beauty salons, because most of the treatment areas require many outlets for the equipments. So, the interior designer must determined what types of equipments are needed in each area, and then the electrical engineer should be consulted to make sure that electrical load is properly planned. Electrical Requirements: The beauty salon needs a lot of electrical outlets, especially for the hair styling, facial care, and pedicure equipments. The electrical requirements depend on the beauty salon size, and the treatments they have. But for general we can anticipate the followings Function Hair styling (for each stylist) Hair dryer (for each dryer) Electric Shampoo chair Reception desk Dispensary area Pedicure station Washing machines, towels Electric Dryer Electric hot water heater Needed number of volts, and amperes 110 volts, 20 amps 110 volts, 10 amps 110 volts, 10 amps 110 volts, 15 amps 110 volts, 20 amps 110 volts, 20 amps 110 volts, 15 amps 220 volts, 45 amps 220 volts, 45 amps Table (3.12): Beauty salon Electrical Requirements

Figure (3.122): Types of electrical outlets Figure (3.121): Electrical outlet sample plan HVAC System HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. The beauty salon should be protected from heating, and that is depending on the building location, and orientation. Also, the beauty salon building should have good indoor air quality (IAQ) by using the natural air, which can be provided by windows, and day light. Also, this building should have strong air conditions especially in the hot areas, such as; hair styling, dryer area, and waxing rooms. The air conditioning has many types, such as; window, split, and central. The beauty salon should use either split or central air conditioning, because they are stronger than the window type. The HVAC system should be installed with the electrical outlets. They must be separated all over the place, especially in the hot areas, such as; the hair styling station, dryer station, waxing, and facial care.

Figure (3.125): HVAC Installation Figure (3.126): Split air condition Figure ( 3.123): Installing HVAC system Figure (3.124): Central air condition Water Supply The beauty salon needs to use the cold and hot water in order to do the treatments for the customers. For instance, it can be used in shampoo area, pedicure area, makeup area, toilet, color mixing room, dispensary (laundry), and hair coloring. For more information, look at the schedule below:

Figure (3.128): Water supply Installation Figure (3.127): Water supply system Installed Water supply Hot water heater storage capacity Hot water heater recovery rate 1 to2 bowls ¾ line 50 gallons 75 gallons/hour 3 to 5 bowls 1 line 75 gallons 150 gallon/hour 6 to 8 bowls 1 ¼ line 100 gallons 200 gallon/hour Hydro therapy tub or Vichy shower 1 line 75 gallons 150 gallons/hour Table (3.13): Beauty salon Water Supply Codes for designing Beauty centre

Beauty salons should be a safe place to make the customers go to such space. With the wet areas and chemicals used in most salons, flooring is critical to prevent falls and injuries. In addition, the exposed sharp edges on cabinets and tables and the privacy of the customers are also important safety issues. Salons (or Barber Shops) are classified as Business occupancies in International Building Code. Actually, the cleanliness is the main concern for the client, as this issue affects licensing, and clientele traffic. Since the beauty salon uses lots of chemical products that give strong fumes in many treatments areas, the indoor air quality (IAQ) is the main concern. The beauty salon should have good ventilation system. So, in order to make good indoor air quality in beauty salons, and spas, we should consider specifying inert hard flooring materials, Paints that have low VOC emission. Also, we should use the biodegradable wall coverings. Fire safety and its signage The beauty salon can be exposed to fire quickly, because of the equipments pressure (especially on using electricity) in hair styling, facial care, waxing, and pedicure areas. The beauty salon should include smoke detector, and fire extinguisher in each zone. The fire exit sign should be clear to the visitors, and it should be lighted. The fire exit signage must be located above the exit door. The emergency exit is different exit in the building that could be used in case of emergency, such as; fire. The main purpose of emergency exit is to provide faster evacuation. These exits should be located in different sides of the building either on stairwell, or hallway. The exit routes contain three parts, exit access, exit, and exit discharge. The exit discharge should lead to the outside area (yard). The fire exit should be covered with fire resistance materials. The emergency exit sign mostly located above the door, so the visitors can see it clearly. This signage can be made of any materials, such as; plastic, metal, glass, or neon. The signage does not have to resist temperature, weathering, or

The requirements of exit sign are depending on building code. They can be ceiling recessed, ceiling surface mounted, wall projected, or flat wall mounted.

Figure (3.135): Wall projected exit sign Figure (3. 136): flat wall mounted exit sign Ramps: Each building should have easy circulation for the handicap people. That is why each building should consider the ramp while designing the space. This ramp is good route for the disable people. The ramp slope is 100 cm for rise of 15 cm, and its width is 100cm, as well for easy access. First of all, Al-Ajmi Reception building used the mostly the central air conditioners types. In some places, they used the split air conditioners. Secondly, they provided many windows to give it the ability to have the natural day light, and fresh air, so it can have good ventilation. Thirdly, the heating and cooling are depending on the building orientation. For example, the north side is usually lose heat throughout windows and require heating in winter. The south side is usually gain heat, and require cooling even in winter. The east side is usually require more cooling in morning, and heating in the afternoon. The west side is usually require more heating in morning, and cooling in the afternoon.
