2 INK SPAWN The Ink People incubates diverse programs and fledgling organizations. Watch this space for detailed descriptions of our many programs. INK Call SPAWN Libby at LOGO for further information. Another month, another great new DreamMaker Project. In August, the Board adopted BRAVA! Dance Eureka (Dance That Gives Back) to join the DreamMaker family. Says project head Virginia Niekrasz- Laaurent, My wish is to involve Humboldt County in order to create relationships, build support, and sustain our cultural identity. This project will enable me to continue to guide my new generation of dancers and reestablish my dance company as a Eureka landmark for the arts. For more information, please contact Virginia at mailto:virginia. enterprises@gmail.com. We also have another recent adoptee who has changed their DreamMaker name. The title of Maureen McGarry s project is changing from Senior Arts Program to Art for the Young at Heart. Look for workshops to begin soon. The Golden Road Art & Music Fair was an amazing success. My grateful thanks to all who worked, volunteered or came and enjoyed. An especially big THANK YOU to Tanya Nordberg, who made the miracle happen. Congratulations are also in order for Raven Oliver and Angel Rubio- Hale for planning, organizing, and 2 pulling off an awesome all-ages (mostly teen) dance party at the Arcata Playhouse. Thanks also go to Jackie Dandeneau and David Ferney for donating the space and being incredibly helpful. Coming up is the Black & White Beaux Arts Masquerade Ball on October 16 at Redwood Raks in Arcata. Put it on your calendar. It will be another of Tanya s amazing extravaganzas and a really good time. Then it will be time for the Holiday Gift Fair, held this year on November 27 at Blue Lake Casino on. If you haven t reserved your space yet, contact Denise at djdld2@gmail.com or stop by our offices and pick up a registration form. And mark your calendar to get beautiful handmade gifts for your loved ones or yourself. Due to display challenges at the Adorni Center, we have decided not to hold the Artists Challenge this December. Instead, we will have a members-only show. There will be no theme, other than to show the amazing diversity and wealth of creativity amongst Inkers. A $5 entry fee per piece will help cover opening expenses and support the organization. 5 Classes/Shows/Events Update from the Brenda Tuxford Gallery Liaison: This has been an exciting year for our gallery. We were shaken out of the original building, graciously hosted for a while at Studio S, and now are spectacularly housed at The Adorni Center. Thank you to all who have participated in the community shows so far. There are only a few more shows to go in the 2010 season, which means it is time to start talking to me about your proposals for shows in Please me with your show idea (title, mediums, potential participants, and any other pertinent info) as well as your top three months to be scheduled. If computers don t work for you, please, ring me up and we will talk. I would like all proposals to reach me by 5 p.m. on October 14. The January show is already scheduled to be a community show tie-in to the Artware Affair that will take place at the end of the month. Artists will be creating, using cigar boxes as a starting point. There ll be an opportunity to bid on the boxes, silent-auction style, all month long. The final bidding takes place at the Artware Affair. This will promote the big fundraiser all month through some of the art to be featured. Look in the October edition of The Ink News for more details about how your work can be featured. I look forward to continue working with you the remainder of this year. I am going to be fading away from Humboldt sometime next year (yeah, it s been delayed - but it s for real this time), so The Ink People needs someone to step forward to take over the responsibilities as Brenda Tuxford Gallery Liaison. This person needs to be organized and able to work well with many different kinds of people. We need you. 5 Talk to me if you are interested. Contact Megan Workman either at The Ink People, , or Workman.meg@ gmail.com. RSVP offer for senior TIP volunteers Volunteers 55 years of age and older who give ongoing volunteer service to any programs of The Ink People are invited to join RSVP, which supports volunteers with benefits such as monthly travel reimbursement (up to $25.00 per month for car, bus or dial-a-ride transportation) to and from your volunteer location. For more information or to enroll in RSVP, please contact the Volunteer Center of the Redwoods (VCOR) at RSVP and VCOR are programs of the Area 1 Agency on Aging. Just a heads-up for youth volunteers: Each organization will have different requirements for volunteers under 18 years old. Volunteer needs are constantly changing, so call and start asking questions. It s good to let them know if an adult tech from Ink will be assisting. Contact Stacy Becker at the Volunteer Center of the Redwoods and RSVP programs, x 218, or rsvp@ a1aa.org. Alan Sanborn watercolor class Local artist Alan Sanborn will be offering his annual watercolor class through The Ink People studios again this fall. Sanborn, who is probably best known locally for his images which grace the Farmers Market posters, says that the class is heavy on technique. Working with water, brushes and color constantly for decades, you slowly learn (well, and steal) from other artists a lot of technical secrets, says Sanborn. Teaching is about passing those ideas continued on page 7

6 Do You Hear The Call Of The Mask? The Ink People began this exciting competition twenty-six years ago as a way blend visual and performing arts by calling on artists to create both art masks and performance masks. Masks are one of the oldest art forms and have been used world wide since prehistoric times for spiritual rituals, in theater and in masked revelry. Masks both conceal and reveal, mystify and exaggerate archetypal characters, as they initiate, teach, and entertain adults and children alike. There are two categories for the competition: Performance Masks, which must be wearable and functional, and Art Masks, which are conceptual in design but need not be wearable. Awards for Best Art and Performance Masks will be $150. Best of Show Award is $300. A variety of activities celebrating masks, mask making and mask performances will accompany our 26th year of this wildly anticipated annual Ink People show. Masks must be delivered to The Ink People between September 21 and September 25. Sliding Entry fee is $5-$10 per mask. For more information contact Kathryne at or at mythicfaces@ juno. com Entr y Guidelines: This mask making competition is open to all artists. The entries must be suitable prepared for exhibition with secure hanging devices or must sit securely on a gallery pedestal. Masks must be constructed so that they can be gently handled without damage. The artist s name and mask title must appear on the inside of the mask for identification. If the mask will be available for purchase, please add 30% commission to the price. For mailing requirements, call The Ink People at Top Right:The Hawaiian, Harry Blumenthal. Bottom, left to right: SA, Phil Haysmer, Tiger, Allison Reed, White Fairy, Susan Gallacher-Turner, and Ginger Beef, Kati Texas. 6

7 Classes/Shows/Events continued from page 5 along. Hopefully that can eliminate a certain amount of struggle for newer artists. At the same time I always get to learn something from my students. The 15-session class covers a wide range of technique possibilities, with a strong emphasis on overlaying color and taking advantage of the transparency of the medium. Artists of every level can benefit from the class. But beware, there will be homework! Sanborn s class meets every Monday night starting September 13, 6:30-9:30, at the temporary Ink People studios, 517 Third Street, Suite 36, in Eureka. The class is handicap accessible; there s an elevator on the ground floor. The class runs until the Christmas holidays. The cost is $195. To sign up, or for more information, call Alan Sanborn at or lala@arcatanet.com. Open call to artists to present at Robo- Games International RoboGames is the largest open robot competition in the world (we re in The Guinness Book, and *they* called *us*), now in its 8th year. 11 ARCATA FROM DAWN TILL DUSK Sneak Preview 7PM Saturday, September 11 th JVD Theatre, HSU Campus Free Screening Children Accompanied by Adults Welcome Arcata From Dawn Till Dusk observes people working, playing and being in community. Ten teams of Humboldt State University students, in collaboration with Professor/Filmmaker Ann Alter and student co-producer Sarah Beck, embarked on a four-month journey to observe and document people and places in Arcata in 42 minutes. Included in the film are some artists from StewART studios. Arcata From Dawn Till Dusk is the United States representative in the international series The World From Dawn Till Dusk initiated by students at the renowned Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School. Film schools in Albania, Australia, China, Croatia, Iran, Poland, Slovakia and Russia are participating in this documentary series, which comes with artistic, technical and conceptual guidelines. The Dawn Till Dusk documentaries are shot from the point of view of an observer in an effort to create a deeper more layered depiction of the world, in strong opposition to the superficial image of reality created by media news. 13 Golden Road Art and Music Fair Thank You! As the organizer of The Golden Road Art and Music Fair, I have to say that it was an amazing experience. There were many occasions over the two and a half months of planning that normally would have caused me stress. Along the line, I had to have faith that the universe and the community would come through with all that we needed, and indeed everything we needed was provided! After the experience, I m simply left in awe of all of the support and love that this community has for The Ink People Center for the Arts. I come away from this event with a renewed sense of how to face challenging situations, with a deeper understanding of how a group of people can work together to create not only a beautiful event, but also a tight-knit, supportive, loving community. I have an endless list of people to thank. I may forget a name along the way, but know that this isn t because you were not a valued contributor. It s simply because keeping track of every detail is still an art that I m learning to manage. If I do forget to mention you, please know that you are deeply appreciated! So here goes the enormous task of thanking several hundred people: Thank You to Libby for letting us play on our Golden Road.
