2 INK SPAWN The Ink People incubates diverse programs and fledgling organizations. Watch this space for detailed descriptions of our many programs. INK Call SPAWN Libby at LOGO for further information. In October, the Board of Directors got a report from DreamMaker project Blue Ox Youth Radio about their activities. There are always exciting developments and some challenges. The Board also accepted the application of new Board Member Heather Sorter. Heather owns Upper Bay Dance Studio, teaches at HSU in the Dance Department, and directs the Dream- Maker project Humboldt Dance Alliance. Welcome, Heather! We had a wonderful, fun time at this year s Beaux Arts Ball! It continues to be a fun-raiser, more than a fundraiser, but heck, it s our unbirthday party. Still, since we made the hard decision to end the Artware Affair, we are looking for another idea for a good fundraiser. We like to have fun, build community, and engage people in creativity. Got any ideas along those lines that will bring in some bucks? If so, please contact me at libby@ inkpeople.org or We re also looking for more good folks to serve on our Board of Directors. If you re interested, please contact me or a board member to discuss it and get an application form. The Holiday Gift Fair is Back!!! And even more back to the past it ll be at the Municipal Auditorium again, like in days of yore. We wanted to be at the Adorni Center, but since the gym floor rotted out and is being repaired, they shuffled us back to the Muni. We are making the best of it and will have a wonderful gift fair, full of local artist created items. And, we still have booth spaces available, so if you were thinking about it and thought you d missed it. Tell all your friends! See you on Saturday, November 26 at the Muni. The Nonprofit Management Mini- MBA Workshops are coming back. More info soon. 4 continued from page one Los Dias de Los Muertos-are an occasion to remember deceased family and friends whose spirits visit the earth once a year. In the United States it has retained political significance for many communities, where it may be expressed through cultural events as well as family gatherings. It is also an opportunity to educate other Americans about the rich culture of peoples of Mexican heritage who share a blend of European, indigenous and African heritage in music, arts, and culture. The Altares (altars) are a space set aside to celebrate the life of a loved one, and need not be large or elaborate. Ofrendas (offerings) on the altar include favorite foods, along with favorite photos and mementos. Families make an effort to provide special treats and often exchange special foods with visiting friends and neighbors. Everyone is invited to contribute to the community altar and view memorials constructed by community members at the Annual Day of the Dead Exhibition at the Adorni Center sponsored by The Ink People Center for the Arts, throughout the month of November. Last year, the event at the Adorni included four Dreammaker programs, Humboldt Comunidad, Bandemonium, Danza Xalxiutlicue/ Kapuli Xalxihutlikue, and our wonderful teen artists from Fortuna. Storyteller and author Olga Loya will be the featured program on November 3, at 6:pm at the Humboldt County Library. Learn about creating your own altar, and participate in traditional crafts which you can take home or contribute to a community altar at our crafts event on Saturday, October 29 from 1-3 p.m. For more information on any of these events call or sguerra@humboldt1.com. Writers Group Member Publishes First Book Meryl King, a member of the Tuesday night Writers Group has just published her first book entitled Humboldt Rocks. In it she explores the kinds of rocks found on the ocean beaches and river bars of Humboldt County. Her 32-page book for middle-graders not only explains the forces that have shaped the geology of the redwood region, it also provides a practical guide to identifying local rocks. The spark that eventually led to her book came one summer day several years ago. Meryl described the afternoon in southern Humboldt. Meryl s book is already on sale at the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitors Center on the Avenue of the Giants between Myers Flat and Weott. It will also be available soon at many local county libraries and bookstores.
