Night May 7 at the Adorni Center, Eureka 13th Annual North Coast Open Studios Artists Show and Reception Saturday, May 7 at the Adorni Center Join North Coast Open Studios participating artists for an Artists Show and Reception featuring 50+ Open Studios participating artists. The Reception will take place Saturday, May 7 from 6 to 9 pm during Arts Alive! The show will adorn the walls of the Adorni Center (1011 Waterfront Drive, Eureka). This free event is open to everyone! Take this opportunity to preview artwork, ranging from paintings and photographs to ceramics and textiles, with everything in between. Visitors will also get a chance to meet Open Studios artists. There will be live music, appetizers and a no host wine bar that benefits North Coast Open Studios. And as a special treat for the night: get an early copy of the 2011 North Coast Open Studios guidebook! The guidebook will also be available in the June 3rd issue of the North Coast Journal and in arts friendly venues throughout Humboldt County. The event is also a fundraiser for North Coast Open Studios. 2 INK SPAWN The Ink People incubates diverse programs and fledgling organizations. Watch this space for detailed descriptions of our many programs. INK Call SPAWN Libby at LOGO for further information. The flow of DreamMaker projects has slowed considerably in recent months. I don t know if it s a function of the economy, but I can t believe people don t have dreams anymore. I have been talking with some folks, but they seem reticent to commit. The Ink People s fiscal year begins on April 1st each year, so we just completed the FY. Somehow, we managed to be in the black for the year, but not by much. Now, we just need to keep working on the deficit we incurred the year before, and we ll be completely in the black. Since Tanya left for the Blue Ox Millworks, our event production is much reduced, although the MARZ production teams are working hard to fill in the gaps. And you may have noticed that Blue Ox has been putting on events like crazy. No mystery there. Although we miss Tanya, we re happy she s able to help Blue Ox out. If you haven t met Carrie yet, please stop by the office Tues-Fri from 9-5 and say hello. She is settling in nicely, and will be running the Holiday Gift Fair this November at the Adorni Center. She is an accomplished dancer and the creator of Monster Pillows! In the North Coast Open Studios guidebook for 2011, which will be available at the NCOS opening on May 7 at the Adorni Center, I ve outlined a vision for creating a community cultural center with multiple sites and venues to serve our needs as well as those of other cultural organizations. If you are affiliated with a group that has space needs, please contact me so we can begin putting together a cohesive vision. 6 Events/Miscellaneous A creative person herself, Ward s mother was born in Japan. Her admiration for traditional Japanese arts has inspired Amy s style as well. My art is my way of expressing my feelings in a healthy way. If I don t draw, after a period of time I feel bottled-up inside. Visual representation also helps me connect with people, and helps me gain common ground with my peers, says Ward Smug s Pizza will take part in Arts Alive! on Saturday, May 7th from 6-9 p.m. It is located at 626 2nd Street, Eureka. Brava! Dance Eureka Classical and Contemporary Works Friday, May 20, 2011 HSU s Van Duzer Theater 7:30 pm $15 Brava! Dance styles will range from ballet to modern to hip hop. A fast paced contemporary ballet piece, It s Natural to be Afraid: Fate vs. Freewill, is one highly anticipated piece. Along with Stephanie Sylvia s intriguing three part piece combining pointe work, bare feet, and rubber boots. One hip hop piece will feature dancers dancing to a live performance by aspiring hip hop artist of the Ink People s MARZ Project, Tiant. Virginia s own progressive contemporary pointe piece will feature the entire Brava! cast and will round-out the show s exceptional talent of choreographers and dancers. The one night performance will be on Friday, May 20th at HSU s Van Duzer Theater at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available in Eureka at the Dancers Studio and Linden & Company Salon & Spa, and in Arcata at Threadbare Dancewear and Rookery Books. Check out danceeureka. com or call for more info. 7 Events/Miscellaneous installation designed to recognize the millions of victims and survivors who have been killed or displaced by ongoing genocides and mass atrocities in Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burma. The project will take 1,000,000 handmade bones made by artists, students, and activists, and install them on the National Mall in Washington, DC in the spring of Currently, the project is looking for people to host bone-making events, serve as educational ambassadors, and create or sponsor bones. Go to for more info. Learn To Manage Your Mood At NLP Workshop Dave Berman is presenting the workshop Manage Your Mood as an introduction to Neuro-Linguistic Programming. NLP is a model of communication using the senses to influence how the brain stores and accesses information responsible for feelings and behavior. From mental pictures to inner dialog to touch, participants will have an interactive experience with NLP techniques and learn to feel good anytime. The event is from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday April 18, repeating on Monday May 2, both nights at the Isis Osiris Healing Temple, 44 Sunny Brae Centre. Suggested donation is $3 - $5. NLP was created in the 1970 s and is best known for providing rapid relief from phobias, addictions, trauma, anxiety, allergies and generally aligning actions with conscious intention. Based on the idea of modeling (if one person can learn to do something, anyone can learn to do it), NLP is also used to improve abilities to learn and strategize, make decisions, be persuasive, and cultivate excellence in any field. Berman is a Certified Practitioner of NLP.
