2 INK SPAWN What an inspiring board meeting we had in November! Three fabulous DreamMaker projects made presentations and were readily accepted by the Board of Directors. Devon s Version: From the vision of Beth V. Stone, Speech Pathologist with the PALS program, and inspired by her work with one boy and his family A ballet developed by Linda Kjesbu will bring the full emotional impact of living as an autistic child, and living with autistic children, through the telling of one boy s story- his version, to the community at large. The ballet will be used as an educational vehicle from which to develop tools and programs for educators and parents. For more info or to get involved, contact Linda Kjesbu at balletarcata@sbcglobal.net. The Writing Well strives to foster personal growth, to enhance the emotional, social, and spiritual health of Humboldt County residents and to promote community integration through the development and sharing of creative writing. The vision is to create a community where residents may use writing and the creative arts to connect both to their inner voice and to the voices of others across the lines of age, gender, sexual orientation, culture and socioeconomic status. For more info or to get involved, contact Kendra Guimaraes at kendradwelley@gmail.com. Humboldt Edge :The mission is to print the voices of homelessness and poverty that have no other platform to be heard. It is to honor the diverse perspectives and wisdom of people experiencing homelessness and poverty, educate about systematic oppressions and advocate for all of us to become agents of change. Finally it is to empower The Ink People incubates diverse programs and fledgling organizations. Watch this space for detailed descriptions of our many programs. Call Libby at for further information. normally disenfranchised people to share their perspectives and knowledge, learn from each other and gain job skills. This paper will cover aspects of homelessness and poverty with a lens towards issues of social justice. Topics will include personal stories and perspectives by those find themselves homeless or living on the edge of poverty. While local, national or international articles and columnists may be included, priority will be given to voices of the homeless and housing insecure. For more info or to get involved, contact Lorena Boswell at humboldtedge@gmail.com. As new projects come in, others finish up. The Ban Longya project began in 2002 with a promise by John and Chansouk Mitchell to build a school for the children of Ban Longya, Laos. Located on the far northern border near China, it is Chansouk s family home. The school was built by the local villagers and grew to include a medical clinic and library. It inspired two other villages close by to build their own (with financial help from relatives who had emigrated to the US). Another foreigner was inspired as well and started an NGO to build schools elsewhere in Laos and has completed two more. John and Souk have put the final finishing touches on their school in Ban Longya and closed down their DreamMaker having made their dream real. We are very proud of them and that we could help them realize their goals. Here s wishing everyone a wondrous holiday season! Make it even more special by viewing the Open Heart Show at the Brenda Tuxford Gallery, 325 Second St., Ste. 203, above the Siren s Song Tavern. (continued on bottom of page 3) 2

Drawing at a Table Near You An update from Universal Pictorial Language program leader Katy Warner Most invented languages are written by one person with a specific intention or ideology. But you and I will forgo that to create The Universal Pictorial Language, or UPL, which is a DreamMaker project of the Ink People Center for the Arts. An image-based language written from scratch. I am beginning a series of workshops in which I will sit down with as many (continued on page 5)

5 Events/Miscellaneous people as I can and we will draw as many hieroglyphics as possible. Our collaboration will coalesce into a language understood across the region, the nation and potentially the world. If you want to join in on this communication experiment, I will be sitting with pen, paper and a list of vocabulary words at a table near you. All I ask is that you come ready to draw, ponder and debate with your fellow humans. Contact Katy Warner for upcoming sessions at Mills College Oakland, or find out more at deathundothee.com. The United States Mint and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) are pleased to announce a call for artists to participate in the Mint s Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). Established in 2003, the AIP serves to enrich and invigorate the nation s coins and medals by commissioning designs from a select pool of outstanding artists. Interested artists are invited to submit applications for consideration. The Mint has partnered with the NEA to manage a new application and review process that is open to all U.S. citizens who are established in the fields of professional art or illustration. As part of the new process, the NEA will convene a review panel to examine all applications and recommend artists to submit demonstration designs. The Mint will pay $1,500 to each applicant for their demonstration design of a current coin or medal program. The review panel will make recommendations to the Mint for final selections. Application guidelines are posted on the NEA website with an initial deadline of January 10, The Mint expects to select up to 20 artists to participate in the AIP. Each of those artists will be awarded a contract for a one-year base period with options to extend up to five additional years. Contracted artists will be invited to submit designs for coins or medals in response to specific commissions from the Mint. Artists will be paid a fee for each commission as well as an additional $5,000 for each design ultimately selected for a coin or medal.
