2 The Origins of Baseball No one knows for sure where baseball originated but most baseball buffs will concur that the sport is based on the English game of rounders. In the United States, baseball became popular in the early 1800's, originally known as townball. Throughout this time period, smaller communities formed teams, while larger cities formed leagues. There is some question as to who founded the original rules of baseball. Some contend that Alexander Cartwright in 1845 published a list of rules. However, others contend that it was Abner Doubleday who invented the game. Most baseball historians believe Alexander Cartwright is, indeed, the originator of baseball as the rules he created are still in place today. The first ever-recorded baseball duel was played in 1846 between Alexander Cartwright's Knickerbockers and the New York Baseball Club. The Knickerbockers lost the game at Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1857, a meeting has held and over 25 amateur teams from the Northeast clamored together to hash out rules among other things. The next year, the National Association of Base Ball Players was formed and the teams, needing financial assistance to support the league, intermittently charged fans an admission fee. The 1860's brought about the Civil War and the interest in baseball, understandably, diminished. After the war, baseball's popularity began to grow more than ever. The league's growth resulted in fans being charged a regular admission fee to watch games. The fees were needed to support the league and the ongoing traveling. Winning also became an important part of the game. Although the league was comprised of amateurs, sponsors occasionally paid the players secretly so that the amateur players wouldn't leave a particular team. The idea of paid players eventually became the norm and today baseball is one of North America's favorite sports. Health Corner Sugar is one of the primary enemies of good oral health, most dentists agree. The problem is how ubiquitous sugar is in all of its forms. Though there has been a campaign against high fructose corn syrup as of late, the truth is that no refined sugar is good for the body and it certainly isn t good for the teeth. And it s everywhere. Soda, fruit juice, cookies, starches of all kinds (particularly the white, refined kind). All of these contribute not only to the nation s obesity epidemic, but to cavities as well. Fruit is a good source of sugar, although you should be careful when eating the dried variety, which has some of the same properties as refined sugar. Adults and children should limit their consumption of sugar general to maintain good oral health. Many dentists note that gum disease is often overlooked when it comes to potential oral health problems. The truth is that gingivitis and other ailments of the gums are a much more likely cause of tooth loss than direct tooth decay. A number of factors can lead to gum disease, including poor hygiene, poor diet, alcoholism and malnutrition. In most cases, it is the buildup of plaque that leads directly to gingivitis. Even those who care very little about the condition of their teeth and gums should take heed: some studies have shown that there may be a link between gum disease and the potential for heart attack. Many dentists point out that just as there are bad foods, there are also good ones that promote healthy teeth and gums. These foods include sugarless gum, which can act as a saliva stimulator. Saliva helps remove acid and food particles from the teeth, decreasing the chance for decay and plaque buildup. If you can get into the habit of brushing your teeth after meals or at least rinsing your mouth out, it will have a beneficial effect as well.

20 Maintaining Independence Through Exercise Regular exercise can help seniors remain healthier and more independent as they age. Studies have shown that seniors who exercise regularly have longer life expectancies, remain independent longer, and improve both physically and psychologically. Balance decreases as we age, and more importantly, falling is a major problem. According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of every three Americans over the age of 65 falls each year, and among individuals 65-84, falls account for 87% of all fractures and are the second leading cause of spinal cord and brain injuries. Many seniors believe that walking is enough exercise to stay fit and healthy. But, according to Dr. Robert Sweezy, renowned osteoporosis expert, walking is not enough to increase muscle and bone density - a key component in remaining independent. The Live 2 B Healthy program is proven to increase balance, mobility and strength - directly reducing falls and injuries that could hamper senior mobility and hasten health decline. That keeps seniors vital and independent for much longer. It is never too late to start an exercise regimen. Many seniors in their eighties and nineties, who have never exercised in their lives, now participate in Live 2 B Healthy programs. In fitness tests, after working with participants for three months, balance had improved by over 250% and cardiovascular function by over 80% by doing regular strength training, three times per week. Regular exercise keeps seniors independent by improving their balance and endurance to prevent falls, injuries, as well as physical and cognitive decline. u u
