When did it come about and where did it start? Abecedary Inquirer Dear Abecedarian, I thought this would be an easy one but with some inquiries and a lot of research I find it to be an interesting and elusive question. I find the best and most detailed information in Donald M. Anderson s book, Calligraphy, The Art of Written Forms. The alphabet actually gets its name from the first two letters of the Greeks; alpha and beta. But we must go back to the Phoenicians who developed some of the first alphabetic script about 1800 B.C. An- This column may be reprinted by non-profit organizations without permission if credit is given to DeAnn Singh and SfC Bulletin. derson states that no one has actually found an ABC sequence of this period in any archeological find that was more than a few letters but we assume the order was formed for perhaps a mnemonic, (intended to assist the memory) or its been speculated that it had something to do with the importance of what the symbols represented. Although M or MEM is the symbol for water which is way down the line from B or BETH for throwing stick so I don t know! Another thought is that they were phonetically grouped.the Hebrew and Greek developed from the Phoenician and both had an established order; Aleph, Beth, Gimel------Alpha, Beta, Gamma --- A, B, C. David Diringer, in The Story of Aleph Beth, calls the whole subject a twilight between conjecture and certainty. WHY YOU SHOULD WALK AWAY FROM A COMMISSION Steff Metal, Emptyeasel As an artist, getting a request for a commission and working out the details with that potential client is one of life s biggest thrills. It s a justification that your work is worth something, and that you re skilled enough and professional enough to take on your own clients. But sometimes a commission isn t what you think it is. Sometimes what seems like an opportunity can be heartache in disguise. So how do you know when it s time to walk away? Here are 4 reasons you might want to say no to a commission: 1. It s too far outside your comfort zone: Often when commissioning an artist, a client will have in mind what they want, but will for whatever reason choose an artist that can t necessarily deliver. For example, your client may be asking you to create a huge abstract piece when you are a landscape painter. Of course you could produce such a work, but would it really be as good as the piece an abstract artist would create? Honesty is the best policy... just be upfront about what you can and can t do. Many collectors don t fully understand the artistic process, so use the opportunity to educate them and point them toward a friend who might be better suited to their tastes. 2. It s ethically wobbly: By ethically wobbly I mean work that doesn t sit well with your conscience. This could be for a number of reasons perhaps you have been asked to create a work glorifying a bloody war hero whose motives you disagree with, perhaps you ve been asked to create a sculpture for the office lobby of a company you know tests products on animals, or maybe you ve been asked to blatantly copy the work of another artist. The best thing to do is to step aside with dignity. It s OK to turn down a project without giving a lengthy reason (the company or individual will easily find another artist willing to take on the piece) but for your own peace of mind, it s best to keep your art business away from ethically wobbly work. 3. The client is haggling over price and details: While there is always an initial stage of hammering out the details of a project where the scope and size of the work might change, a client who constantly tries to get you to do more work for less money is not the kind of client you want to keep. It can be tempting to take the work because any money is better than no money, but working harder for less reward will leave you stressed out and resentful. If you work for less than you re worth once, you ll never be able to command that higher price. Better to sever ties now before you re over-committed. 4. You ve just got a bad feeling about it: Recently, I was talking to two potential clients via Skype. They had a project they wanted me to do, and I was invited to conference call with the interested parties. Most of the call involved the two of them talking over one another. I got the vibe that one of them really liked me, but the other one did not. The project was a really exciting one, and the money was very, very good, but I had such a bad feeling about working with these two that I turned it down. It s important to listen to your instincts. If something seems off, or if you feel as though the client will be difficult, then don t take the job. Just drop the client before you even start you ll save yourself time and stress, and you can use that time to work on (or find) commissions that are a good fit for you. She will continue to make the needed flyers, etc., until she can find a replacement. She will be stepping down as the official Publication chair, however, and no longer a board member as of June 30, Outreach - Jane Shibata The International Printing Museum event, Kid s Kraft Day on March 24, was a success. I was assisted by Sylvia Kowal, C.C. Sadler, and Kay Kami. C.C. Sadler has an event at Long Beach City College for SfC Outreach that is scheduled for May 11 and 12. We still need volunteers. FUN UPCOMING SfC Outreach Event at Long Beach City College Horticulture Garden - May 11 & 12, Featuring: A WATERCOLOR FLOWERS WORKSHOP WITH BARBARA CLOSE on both days 10am to noon, bookmarks, demos, Kid s Art Table. Retreat - Ann Lawrence Twenty people are coming to the 43rd Annual SfC Spring Retreat this year. It is exciting to be experiencing a new venue, but it will never replace our beloved La Casa de Maria, which I am hoping we can return to in Kristi, Sylvia and I have seen the scriptorium, rooms and grounds at Westmont College and I think everyone will be very comfortable there. Technical - Chava Gerber/Evan Ballinger (Web Service) Calligraph - Joan Bechtel I met Jack Sweeney at Typecraft. He ran sample prints of some photos I had sent him. According to their quote, they will only provide digital proofs. I have not met Karl Widmaier at Design Print, but he did send me some samples of how some of the photos would look on the paper he proposed to use. I met with Tim Healey at Queen Beach Printers in Long Beach on May 1. They printed the last issue of the Calligraph. Tim said he would provide digital proofs and a final printed proof on both the McCoy Silk paper and the Accent Opaque paper. (Design Print offered a digital proof only and Typecraft offered a digital and print proof.) In order to meet the printing deadline, we will need to get everything to the printer by the end of June and get the final proofs by the 15th of July, so we will need to make a decision on what printer to use at this meeting. Karen Chapman and Rosana Ang both wanted the write-ups from the workshop instructors to be charged to the Calligraph, but we have no income to offset that expense and we do not pay anyone else to write articles for the Calligraph. (Also, Yves Leterme wasn t paid for the logo he did for our last issue.) Since the workshop report is included in the instructor s workshop agreement and Rosana is setting the amount of the payment, I feel that the payment should come out of the workshop budget. Nobody else is paid anything. Our budget only covers the printing cost. Can we take a vote on this? Contd on page 4 Deadline for the December Bulletin is November 15, Please submit articles or questions to Carol Hicks at dhicks5@socal.rr.com 3

4 Minutes continued from page 3... DISCUSSION: Do we need to pay teachers for their write-ups? (Need to set up budget first). Linda commented that the workshop report is vital to all members especially those that couldn t attend. Kristi commented that we now have many more workshops per year. Bylaws Update - Chava Gerber A PDF of the proposed revisions to the bylaws was ed to all Board members on May 1 for review so it could be discussed at this Board meeting. Chava, Chris, Karen and Joan met to go through and update the bylaws. Correction: Remove Section 6.03 re: standing committees. Motion: David proposed to approve the bylaws as amended by the committee. Seconded by Chris. The motion passed unanimously. New Business: Carrie received a thank you letter from Kensington Palace for her mailing to Meagan Markle. Meeting adjourned at 1:15. I AM A CALLIGRAPHER I use pointed pen and ink... most of the time... but I have been known to use markers, fine tip pens, pencils, colored pencils, and reed pen... oh yes, I have a quill or two. Now, I'm having fun learning Chinese Calligraphy... I use a brush and ink ground from an ink stick! I've been known to use wide, flat nibs and old traditional Speedball nibs used them back in the old days in the 1960's "before markers" to do signs, word cards, charts, etc. for my classroom. If it makes a mark on a page, a calligrapher will use it! Did you know that ancient Chinese calligraphers wrote on wooden slats that were tied together with threads? They also cast characters into metal. Ancient middle eastern calligraphers used a stylus to make marks in clay. While we might have long debates over whether all of these are in someone's definition of calligraphy, it is probably all technical "hair splitting." Have some fun looking through Pen and Ink Arts and John Neal's catalogs and you'll see many delightful instruments of our art. 7 Q & A. Ok, try mixing either a little one drop at a time of either the gold or the Bronze spectralite.. to make it brighter.. I have done this with great success, but you also have to make sure that the Copper, Bronze, and Gold, is well mixed first, before you experiment, as I have found that in the bottle the best bits i.e. the pigment is still on the bottom of the jar, so really mix the inks individually first to make sure that the pigments are in the liquid you take out. Also clean out the droppers, as they sometimes don t pick up the mixed inks well. Collene in Oz.. GRUNGY NIBS Some of my nibs are getting very grungy and I was wondering if you have any recommendations for deep cleaning of nibs. Thank you! Cora. Joe Vitolo recommends to use tooth paste to prepare a nib before using, I heard that if you have an ultra sonic jewelry cleaner that it may work on your nibs. If you are cleaning pointed nibs, you can try a toothbrush on it, but if you are cleaning Brause nibs, you may want to take the reservoir off and try yo clean it that way, be careful not to bend it, the reservoir that is.. I usually sand lightly with 400 grit sandpaper under running water (nib and reservoir separately). That takes inks, acrylics and the beginnings of rust right off. An added bonus is that because this doesn't get to the ink/paint in the stamped text on the nibs, it becomes easier to read the nib size with dark(er) lettering against a clean metal surface. Jim Marie. I've heard various things. Some like a toothbrush, some Windex (or equivalent ammonia cleaner), some an ultrasonic cleaner like sold by John Neal, some don't mind a crusty nib and just get a new one when they get to grimy. Haley. Sudsy ammonia works great. If it's not available, mix regular ammonia with a little dishwashing liquid. (Ventilate for fumes. I do this in the bathroom with the fan on and the door closed). I soak just the nibs in sudsy ammonia for 10 minutes or more. Then rinse: to avoid getting it on my hands, I pour the nibs and solution through a little strainer under running water. Then I use a toothbrush to get any remaining crud off. Finally, I promise myself that I will faithfully clean my pen nibs after each and every use. Beth. WATERPROOF COPPER I'm looking for a recommendation for a waterproof copper ink that will be dense enough to be legible on dark grey envelopes. I have tried Spectralite and it's not as bright as I would like. This is a special bride so I don't want any mishaps in the mail! Sharon in RI. Have you tried adding PearlEx powder to the copper? Love spectralite, but you can add a little pearl ex it will make it dense and can be bright or darker with various shades without losing the permanence of this product. Reen. The best metallics I've found so far for lettering onto dark surfaces are the Winsor Newton metallic inks (the ones in the big jars, not the little teensy ones, which don't work as well for some reason), and the FineTec pearlescent "golds" series, which you can mix with some sepia and Winsor-Newton-Indian-red ink to create a copper. (Also, it does work to mix the FineTec colors with themselves.) The FineTec golds are surprisingly thick and opaque, and dry very nicely, resisting eraser well, so I think they would work well for envelopes, although I admit I haven't tried this yet. They come in a watercolor style format, so you need to apply to your nib with a brush. Jerise. ROSE GOLD Does anyone know a good formula to mix rose gold? The powder I have is very expensive for envelope addressing. Elaine. Have you tried PearlEx powder with gum arabic? They have a rose gold sold at John Neal Bookseller and it's not expensive. The FineTec pans also come in a rose gold but get a little pricier. Grace. I've used red ochre gouache to mix natural pinks, with white pearl gouache for a pink champagne color; I would try mixing it with a gold pearl gouache for a rose gold effect. Katherine. The Rose Gold is available in a 4 ounce container which is $13.99 and much less expensive than buying smaller containers, if you have a lot of addressing to do. John. I would try mixing Holbein Pearl Gold gouache (my favorite) with just a teensy hint of red gouache to give you that shimmer rose gold you're looking for. Artists books occupy a creative space between traditional and contemporary works of art, challenging what a book can be. They are made to be displayed on the wall or deployed as sculptures or installations. The exhibit seeks to provoke new inquiry into the nature of art and to highlight the essential role that books play in contemporary culture.
